The GN-007 Arios Gundam (aka Arios Gundam, Arios) is the successor to GN-003 Gundam Kyrios introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 season two, and is piloted by Allelujah Haptism.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
Following its defeat by the UN Forces in A.D. 2308, the paramilitary organization Celestial Being quietly reorganized and rebuilt its combat capabilities, before reemerging in A.D. 2312.[1][2][3][4] The GN-007 Arios Gundam was one of the new Gundams developed by Celestial Being during the four years interval.[1][5][6] It is the successor to the GN-003 Gundam Kyrios, and inherited the ability to change from MS Form (also known as "MS Mode") to Flight Form (also known as "Flight Mode", "Flight Position") during aerial combat.[1][7][8][9] Arios also featured improved specifications, such as enhanced flight performance, higher acceleration and mobility, and more fixed armaments.[1][3][7][8] Furthermore, its Flight Form possessed melee combat capability for improved operability.[1][7][10][11] Unlike its fellow new Gundams, Arios focused on speed instead of attack power, and its inherent high mobility can be further boosted by the Trans-Am System.[3][12][13] Due to Arios's uniqueness, there were limitations to the missions it could participate, but there were also many missions where it was indispensable.[13]
Arios was made specifically for Allelujah Haptism, Kyrios's pilot who went missing during the defeat by UN Forces.[1][3][5][8] Despite this, his Celestial Being comrades believed in his survival and completed the Arios.[1][3][8] Allelujah's comrades then learnt in A.D. 2312 that he was held captive by the enemy for the past four years, and freed him in a daring operation that ended with him escaping in the Arios.[5][7][14] Although this was his first encounter with Arios, Allelujah immediately knew it was Kyrios's successor without being told and had no problem using it to defeat enemy mobile suits.[1][5][8][14] However, Allelujah had difficulties drawing out Arios's maximum performance.[5] The head injuries Allelujah suffered during the defeat by UN Forces led to a temporary loss of his ability to use Quantum Brainwaves, and his second personality, Hallelujah, also fell into a dormant state, limiting his combat capabilities.[5][15][16][17] His Quantum Brainwaves and Hallelujah finally returned in the final battle with the Innovators, and with them, Allelujah defeated the Innovators' GNZ-005 Garazzo using Arios.[5][18]
With GN Drive Tau-equipped mobile suits being the standard units of the Earth Sphere Federation Forces and the A-Laws, the Arios's armament was significantly enhanced to fight against them.[11] The Arios's main armament was the GN Twin Beam Rifle, a double-barreled beam rifle with high accuracy and rapid-fire capability that could be used in both MS Form and Flight Form.[1][10][19][20] Other ranged weaponry included double-barreled GN Submachine Guns built into both forearms, and GN Vulcans built into both sides of the Flight Form's nose unit.[1][3][5][19] For melee combat, the Arios could use a pair of GN Beam Sabers stored on the back of the left and right front waist armor.[1][11][14][19] Lastly, Arios's shoulder binders were equipped with GN Beam Shields – a new defensive armament that generated beam shields made of GN Particles.[1][5][7][8] In Flight Form, these shoulder binders turned into the nose unit and can be used as a claw, with the beam shields now serving as beam blades.[1][3][5][11] The built-in GN Beam Shields also helped to reduce Arios's weight for flight purposes by eliminating the need to equip a heavy physical shield.[1]
In terms of body structure, the Arios's head antennas incorporated the GN Particles control function of the clavicle antennas mounted on top of Kyrios's torso, and its forehead sensor utilized the new crystal sensor technology found in some of the Gundams' weapons.[1][5][21][22] Additionally, since there is no longer a need to let people know that a mobile suit is a Gundam, the Gundam face, which was exposed in Kyrios's Flight Form, is stowed in Arios's Flight Form to reduce air resistance.[1][5][11][21] A pair of GN Verniers mounted on the outer side of the thighs served as Arios's main thrusters, and stabilizers of various designs were installed throughout the Gundam's body.[1][5] The fin-like structures on the front of the ankle armor and on the knees, the movable bottom piece of the center front waist armor, and the movable unit on the mobile suit's back all function as stabilizers.[1][5] Using the GN Particles' mass manipulation ability, these high-performance stabilizers served as part of the Arios's flight control mechanism and are unique to this aerial mobile suit.[1][5] The fin-like structures on the ankle armor and knees also function as the Flight Form's wings.[5][11][21] As Arios is a transformable machine, its cockpit can rotate to suit the different forms.[21]
The GN Drive powering Arios was installed in the mobile suit's pelvic region, between its legs.[1][3][5][11] This placement enabled smooth supply of GN Particles to Arios's dedicated support unit, the GNR-101A GN Archer, when they combine in their respective Flight Forms to form the GN-007+GNR-101A Archer Arios.[1][3][5][23] In this combined state, Arios's GN Drive is directly connected to GN Archer's nose unit.[1][3][5][21] The GN Archer was developed as an enhanced version of Kyrios's Tail Booster, but it could also fight on its own when piloted and could switch between MS Form and Flight Form.[1][3][5][8] In Archer Arios form, the weaponry, thrust, and mobility of Arios's Flight Form were enhanced by the docked GN Archer.[3][5][24][25] The Arios was later upgraded into the GN-007GNHW/M Arios Gundam GNHW/M for the final battle with the A-Laws and the Innovators.[5][11][13][26] After this battle, the badly damaged Arios was rebuilt as the GN-007/AL Arios Gundam Ascalon, a heavy weapon design that preceded the Arios Gundam GNHW/M, and assigned to the support team, Fereshte.[5][27][28][29] The Arios itself was succeeded by the GN-011 Gundam Harute.[5][30][31]
Armaments[]
- GN Twin Beam Rifle
- The Arios's main weapon, it is a double-barreled beam rifle with a high rate of fire.[1][5][19][25] The GN Twin Beam Rifle was equipped with the same newly developed crystal sensor as used on the weapons of Arios's fellow Gundams, granting it remarkable accuracy even during high-speed movements.[1][3][5][32] Usable in both MS Form and Flight Form, the rifle is a handheld weapon during MS Form and is mounted in an upside-down manner on the bottom right side of the Arios during Flight Form.[1][5][10][20] In Flight Form, the upper barrel of the rifle can pivot to attack ground targets.[1][5][19][25] In MS Form, it is possible to store the rifle on the side of the forearm when it is not in used.[33] When required, Arios can be equipped with a second GN Twin Beam Rifle, enabling dual wielding of the weapon.[5][21][34]
- GN Submachine Gun
- A small, double-barreled, beam submachine gun was built into the back of each forearm, and they have the same performance as the handheld GN Beam Submachine Gun used by the GN-003 Gundam Kyrios.[1][5][25][33] When used, the armored covers concealing the GN Submachine Guns slide open to expose the guns' muzzles.[1][5][11][14] The GN Submachine Guns are only used in MS Form.[5]
- GN Beam Shield
- A new defense system that deploys beam shield made of GN Particles.[1][5][19][25] It was installed in both shoulder binders, enabling the deploying of two beam shields, one per binder.[1][5][7][25] The beam shields also have offensive power and can be used for melee combat in Flight Form.[1][5][19][25] During Flight Form, the shoulder binders turn into the nose unit, and they can open widely like a claw to sandwich and then bisect the enemy mobile suit using the beam shields, which now function as beam blades.[1][3][10][11] This is an enhancement and expansion of the Kyrios's GN Shield's claw function.[1][13]
- GN Beam Saber
- A melee weapon that emits beam blade made of compressed GN Particles, Arios was equipped with two GN Beam Sabers, stored on the back of the left and right front waist armor.[1][5][14][25] When used, the GN Beam Saber swings out to the side for grabbing by the Arios's hand, then it emits a beam blade for melee combat.[1][5][14][25] The GN Beam Saber has high attack power, but its power can be reduced due to atmospheric conditions and beam scattering/diffusion measures.[1][12][19] The Arios's GN Beam Sabers have the same shape as the ones used by the GN-0000 00 Gundam and the GN-008 Seravee Gundam.[5]
- GN Vulcan
- A pair of GN Vulcans were built into the sides of the Flight Form's nose unit, opposite the GN Beam Shields' emitters.[1][3][12][19] These low-powered weapons are effective in intercepting missiles, etc., and by shooting down the targets ahead of the Arios, they helped to secure the flight path.[1][12][19]
Special Equipment & Features[]
- A special system that when activated would fully release all of the compressed high-density GN Particles accumulated in the Gundam, enhancing its mobility and defensive capabilities as well as allowing it to perform at three times its normal output for a limited time.[12][35][36][37] Additionally, the entire Gundam appeared red and afterimages were generated when moving.[12][15][33][36] Due to Arios's inherent high mobility, it benefited from Trans-Am System's mobility boost more than its fellow Gundams.[12] When Arios activate this system while in the GN-007+GNR-101A Archer Arios form, the system's effects also spread to the docked GNR-101A GN Archer.[12] Similarly, the CBS-74 Ptolemaios 2's capabilities were enhanced when Arios used its Trans-Am System while docked in the ship's hangar.[20][38] Unfortunately, the Trans-Am System is a double-edged sword, as once it ended, the Gundam's performance would drop as all its GN Particles were used up.[12][35][36][39] This negative effect would last until the stored GN Particles within the Gundam returned to normal level.[35][36][39] The Arios and its fellow new Gundams deployed by the Celestial Being in A.D. 2312 were all designed on the premise of using the Trans-Am System actively, thus, although a certain drop in performance remained unavoidable, the deterioration would not be that severe until they could not battle.[5][12][32][40] Furthermore, these Gundams could deactivate the Trans-Am System at any time, unlike their predecessors, where the system continued running until all the GN Particles were depleted.[40][41]
Variants[]
- GN-007+GNR-101A Archer Arios
- The GN-007 Arios Gundam and its dedicated support unit, the GNR-101A GN Archer, can dock in their respective Flight Forms to form the GN-007+GNR-101A Archer Arios.[1][5][23][25] In Archer Arios form, the GN Archer attached to Arios's rear, with its nose unit directly connected to Arios's GN Drive.[1][3][5][23] The attached GN Archer functioned like the GN-003 Gundam Kyrios's Tail Booster, increasing Arios's thrust and mobility, as well as enhancing the Gundam's weaponry with GN Missiles and two more GN Vulcans.[3][5][24][25] The Archer Arios form also enabled transfer of GN Particles from Arios to GN Archer, and these particles are used to recharge the support unit's large GN Condenser and to power its systems.[1][5][24][42] The entire Archer Arios can be solely controlled by Arios's pilot when needed, such as when the docked GN Archer is unmanned.[17][23][43] The Archer Arios can instantaneously separate into the Arios Gundam and the GN Archer according to battle conditions, enabling them to fight as separate mobile suits and to transform into their MS Forms.[1][5][23][44] However, both mobile suits cannot dock in their MS Forms.[5]

Notes & Trivia[]
- Arios may be derived from the Hebrew name Arioch. Arioch was the name of a king mentioned in the book of Genesis, as well as the name of a demon in more recent works.
- Like the Kyrios, the Arios is the tallest of the four Celestial Being Gundams, which corresponds with Allelujah being the tallest Gundam Meister at 6"1'.
- In episode 6 of Season 2, Arios is seen holding a GN Sniper Rifle II as it launched for battle. This was likely an animation error.
- In the 2nd Super Robot Wars Z2 game, the Arios cannot transform on the field though the flight form is seen in some of the attack animations. It got a movement boost to make up for it.
- Arios appears alongside GN Archer in Gundam Extreme Versus as a DLC unit. Unlike the other Gundams, it has a cost of 1000, the amount usually relegated to grunt suits. Starting in Gundam Extreme Versus Maxi Boost its cost has been elevated to cost 2500.
