The GN-0000 00 Gundam (aka 00 Gundam, 00 (pronounced "Double-Oh")) is the titular mobile suit of Mobile Suit Gundam 00. It is the successor of the GN-001 Gundam Exia and is piloted by Setsuna F. Seiei.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The GN-0000 00 Gundam was one of the new Gundams developed by Celestial Being after the paramilitary organization was defeated by the UN Forces in AD 2308.[1][2][3][4] It was made specifically for Setsuna F. Seiei, thus it was designed based on his previous mobile suit, the GN-001 Gundam Exia, and reflected Exia's performance data.[4][5][6][7] Although Setsuna's whereabouts were unknown at the time of the 00's development, his Celestial Being comrades continued developing the mobile suit as they believed he would return.[5][6] Deployed in AD 2312 following Setsuna's return and as Celestial Being made a comeback after four years of silence, the 00's most prominent feature is the Twin Drive System that comprised two original GN Drives.[2][3][8][9] By synchronizing the two GN Drives, the Twin Drive System causes the resulting GN Particle output to be squared that of a single GN Drive rather than merely doubled.[2][3][8][10] With this immense amount of GN Particles, the 00 was expected to have exceptional combat capabilities.[4][6][9] The theory behind the Twin Drive System was developed by the founder of Celestial Being, Aeolia Schenberg, and hidden in the quantum processing system Veda.[5][6][8] This theory was eventually sent to Celestial Being at the same time as the Trans-Am System.[2][3][5][8]
The 00 was the first mobile suit to incorporate the Twin Drive System.[4][8][11][12] Unfortunately, synchronization of the two GN Drives was extremely difficult, and this made achieving stable operation of the system elusive.[4][7][8][9] Even with the use of GN Drives from the Exia and the GN-000 0 Gundam, a combination which had the highest synchronization rate among the five GN Drives that existed at that point of time, the system failed to reach the stable operational range.[2][3][4][8] In the end, Setsuna used the Trans-Am System briefly to forcibly pushed the Twin Drive System into the stable operational range.[2][4][8][13] This was a dangerous method however, as it could cause the GN Drives to overload and even explode.[5][8][13] Although the Twin Drive System worked, it was far from being stable.[6][7][14] Because of this, usage of the Trans-Am System was banned due to the risk of overloading the GN Drives, which was what happened when Setsuna used the system when battling the GNX-704T/AC Ahead Sakigake.[4][14][15][16] These problems were later solved by combining 00 with a dedicated support machine, the GNR-010 0 Raiser, forming the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser.[4][7][17][18] Through this combination, the 0 Raiser could use its system to control and stabilize the 00's Twin Drive System, and the Trans-Am System could also be utilized safely.[4][5][7][19]
Located off the shoulders, the pair of GN Drives were mounted separately on two drive bases that were connected to the 00's backpack through a pair of drive arms.[5][9][13][20] The drive bases could rotate to the front and back of the mobile suit, enabling the GN Drives to change freely from their standard side-facing position to other positions.[4][8][13] This granted the 00 superior mobility as the GN Drives were covered with a thruster cone that enabled them to function as the mobile suit's main thrusters by emitting GN Particles to generate thrust.[7][8][13] Furthermore, when the GN Drives faced the front, the emitted particles could be used to generate a GN Field for defense.[3][4][8][13] The placement of 00's GN Drives was based on the operational data of the GN-XXX Gundam Rasiel, which had high mobility thanks to its shoulder-mounted GN Verniers.[5][21][22][23] Due to the miniaturization of devices such as stabilizers that control the GN Drives' core units, the 00's GN Drives are smaller compared to those of the Exia and the other 3rd generation Gundams.[13] As for the GN Drives' thruster cone, it was based on that of the 3rd generation Gundams' and incorporated functionalities of the three-thrusters type GN Drive cover used by the 2nd generation Gundams, such as the GNY-001 Gundam Astraea.[7][13][24][25] Besides the GN Drives, the 00's backpack could also generate thrust using GN Particles due to a pair of built-in thrusters.[4][9][13]
The Gundams were equipped with special antennas called "Clavicle Antennas" to control their GN Particles, and 00 was no exception, but it adopted a miniaturized version installed in the forehead as a pair of yellow antennas.[4][9][13][26] Previously, the clavicle antennas were mounted on a Gundam's torso, but their position was changed in the 00 to avoid functional interference with the movements of the mobile suit's GN Drives.[4][13][26] Additionally, 00 had an extra pair of chest-mounted antennas to support the functions of the forehead's clavicle antennas.[4][13] As with the other Gundams, GN Condensers were installed throughout the 00's body to store excess GN Particles generated by its GN Drives, enabling the mobile suit to consume a large amount of particles instantaneously when required.[5][9][13][27] However, the 00 utilized newly designed, high performance GN Condensers as the amount of particles generated by the Twin Drive System is of a different magnitude.[4][5][13] Like previous GN Condensers, these new GN Condensers could also display various information and data, such as the amount of particles stored.[5][27] The GN Particles are transmitted to various parts of a Gundam's body using special GN Cables, and while these cables were exposed in earlier Gundams, they have been internalized in the 00.[5][9][26][28]
While the 00 was developed as a general-purpose machine, its armaments emphasized melee combat, like its predecessor, the Exia.[4][5][29] Its main armament, a pair of GN Sword IIs, were developed from Exia's GN Sword.[3][5][13][29] The GN Sword II has three different modes: Sword, Beam Saber, and Rifle, allowing the 00 to fight flexibly without switching weapons.[3][4][5][13] The other armaments are a pair of GN Beam Sabers that doubled as GN Beam Daggers, and a pair of GN Shields that could combine into a large shield and are also usable as striking weapons.[2][4][9][13] A variant of the 00, the GN-0000/7S 00 Gundam Seven Sword is equipped with seven blades, and this is an evolved version of the "Seven Swords" used by Exia.[4][30][31] Other variants of the 00 included the GN-0000+GNR-010/XN 00 XN Raiser, where the mobile suit combines with an enhanced form of the 0 Raiser, and the GN-0000/XN XN 00 Gundam, where the 0 Raiser's enhancement parts are fitted onto the 00 itself.[4][21][32] The 00 was heavily damaged during the final battle with the Innovators and lost both GN Drives.[4][6][7][33] It was eventually repaired, with a pair of improved large GN Condensers mounted in place of the GN Drives.[6][34][35] The repaired 00 retained the Twin Drive System and could even use the Trans-Am System for an extremely short period of time.[4][6][7][35]
Armaments[]
- GN Sword II
- A pair of handheld GN Sword IIs served as 00 Gundam's main armament, and they were developed from GN-001 Gundam Exia's GN Sword.[4][5][7][29] The GN Sword II has three different modes: "Sword Mode" where the weapon functions as a physical sword capable of penetrating GN Field, "Beam Saber Mode" where a long beam blade is emitted from the blade section, and "Rifle Mode" where the weapon changes into a rifle-like shooting form with the blade section rotating 90 degrees.[4][8][13][36] The changing of modes occurs instantaneously, eliminating the time lag caused by changing weapons.[4][8][13][37] Additionally, the Rifle Mode can quickly turn into a sword for melee combat by reversing the rotation of the blade section while keeping the other sections unchanged.[14][17][38] The two GN Sword IIs can also be connected grip to grip to form the "Twin Lance" - a large melee weapon with blades on both ends.[4][6][7][39]
- Each GN Sword II has two muzzles for firing beams located near the base of the blade section, one on each side.[4][38][40][41] Besides firing regular beam shots, the Rifle Mode also has other shooting modes, such as large, V-shaped blasts fired jointly from the two muzzles and capable of destroying a space cruiser, diffused beam mode, and rapid-fire mode where the two muzzles fire alternately in a rapid manner.[29][40][41] Additionally, the two muzzles worked together to generate the beam blade of the Beam Saber Mode.[13][29][42] The GN Sword II was equipped with the same newly developed crystal sensor as used on the weapons of 00's fellow new Gundams, granting it remarkable shooting accuracy.[16][43][44] The grip of the GN Sword II can split into two, with one part held in hand, and the other plugged into a mount on the front of the forearm.[3][13][38][42] When not in use, the pair of GN Sword IIs are mounted separately on the hardpoints of the left and right side skirt armor.[4][13][40][42]
- GN Beam Saber
- A melee weapon that emits a beam blade made of compressed GN Particles when drawn.[3][4][6][39] Two GN Beam Sabers are stored on the 00's rear waist, and when used, they swung sideways for easier drawing.[3][4][16][39] The GN Beam Saber has high attack power, but its power can be reduced due to atmospheric conditions and beam scattering/diffusion measures.[3][4][6][13] By adjusting its output and shortening the beam blade, this weapon becomes a GN Beam Dagger, which can be thrown to attack distant enemy.[4][6][13][19] Compared to the ones equipped by the Exia, the 00's GN Beam Sabers had slightly improved energy efficiency, etc.[7]
- GN Shield
- Made of E-Carbon, this defensive armament also has a GN Field coating on its surface, and can block attacks from most conventional weaponry.[4][5][7][13] The pair of dedicated GN Shields used by the 00 can be mounted separately on each forearm or below each GN Drive, or combined into a single, large, forearm-mounted shield.[7][13][29][40] The combined form is also known as "Double Shield", while the singular form is also known as "Single Shield".[4][13] The white-colored front section of each GN Shield can slide forward when required, changing the length of the shield.[4][13][38] Furthermore, the pointed tip of this front section enabled the GN Shield to be used as a striking weapon in melee combat.[4][5][7][13]
Special Equipment & Features[]
- This system is the most prominent feature of the 00 Gundam, which was also the first mobile suit to be incorporated with it.[2][3][4][12] By synchronizing two original GN Drives, the Twin Drive System caused the resulting GN Particle output to be squared that of a single GN Drive rather than merely doubled.[2][3][8][10] The theory behind the Twin Drive System was developed 200 years ago by the founder of Celestial Being, Aeolia Schenberg, and subsequently hidden in the quantum processing system Veda.[5][6][8] In AD 2308, the theory of the Twin Drive System was sent to Celestial Being at the same time as the Trans-Am System.[2][3][5][8] Although the Twin Drive System generated an immense amount of GN Particles, the conditions for it to operate stably were very strict, with the system reaching the stable operational range only when the particle synchronization rate of both GN Drives were over 80%.[2][4][6][8] Synchronizing the two GN Drives was difficult as each of the five GN Drives that existed at that point of time had their own subtle individual differences.[5][6][7][13] Thus, if the pairing of the GN Drives did not go well, the synchronization would be unstable and the Twin Drive System would not operate.[5][6][8][13]
- Even with the pairing of GN Drives from the GN-000 0 Gundam and the GN-001 Gundam Exia, which had the highest synchronization rate, the Twin Drive System only activated after the Trans-Am System was briefly used to forcibly pushed it into stable operational range.[2][4][8][13] This was a dangerous method however, as the GN Drives might overload and even explode.[5][8][13] Although the Twin Drive System was activated, 00 was still unable to stabilize the system on its own, and use of Trans-Am in this state caused both GN Drives to overload as seen during the battle with the GNX-704T/AC Ahead Sakigake.[4][7][14][15] Stable operation of the Twin Drive System was eventually achieved when 00 docked with the GNR-010 0 Raiser support machine, forming the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser.[4][6][7][18] The 00 lost both GN Drives during the final battle with the Innovators, and after it was repaired, a pair of improved large GN Condensers were mounted in place of the GN Drives.[6][34][35] This repaired 00 retained the Twin Drive System as Celestial Being successfully reproduced the system using the improved large GN Condensers[4][35][45], but some of its effects may differ from the original that utilized two GN Drives.[11] While Aeolia only developed the theory behind the Twin Drive System, he seemed to have anticipated to some extent what it was capable of, and what he wanted was not its use as the engine unit of a weapon.[5]
- A special system that when activated would fully release all of the compressed high-density GN Particles accumulated in the Gundam, enhancing its mobility and defensive capabilities as well as allowing it to perform at three times its normal output for a limited time.[24][46][47][48] Additionally, the entire Gundam appeared red and afterimages were generated when moving.[15][24][46] However, the Trans-Am System is a double-edged sword, as once it ended, the Gundam's performance would drop as all its GN Particles were used up.[24][47][49] This negative effect would last until the stored GN Particles within the Gundam returned to normal level.[24][49] The 00 and its fellow new Gundams deployed by the Celestial Being in AD 2312 were all designed on the premise of using the Trans-Am System actively, thus, although a certain drop in performance remained unavoidable, the deterioration would not be that severe until they could not battle.[4][5][11][43] Furthermore, these Gundams were able to deactivate the Trans-Am System at any time, unlike their predecessors, where the system continued running until all the GN Particles were depleted.[4][11]
- While 00 could use the Trans-Am System briefly as seen during the mobile suit's first successful activation[8], it was unable to withstand longer usage of the system as shown when both of 00's GN Drives overloaded as it battled the Ahead Sakigake using Trans-Am.[15] This was because 00 was unable to stabilize the Twin Drive System by itself, and Celestial Being's chief mechanic, Ian Vashti, also remarked after the overload incident that the particle output of the Twin Drive System was too much for the mobile suit.[4][7][16][50] When the 00 docked with the 0 Raiser to form the 00 Raiser, the Twin Drive System was stabilized and the Trans-Am System could be used safely.[5][7][18][19] The Trans-Am System was originally limited to Gundams powered by GN Drive, but after the final battle with the Innovators, it became possible for Gundams powered by improved large GN Condensers to use the system as well due to technological advancement.[4][6][11][45] Thus, the repaired 00, which had two such GN Condensers in place of the lost GN Drives, was able to utilize the Trans-Am System, albeit for an extremely short period of time.[6][7][35]
- A defensive energy barrier generated using compressed high-density GN Particles, it can nullify most beams and physical attacks.[4][11] When both of 00's GN Drives rotate to the front, their emitted GN Particles can be used to generate a partially visible GN Field to defend against frontal attacks.[3][4][8][13]

Notes & Trivia[]
- In the Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Gundam Meisters game, the 00 Gundam appears without its support unit, the 0 Raiser; thus there is no 00 Raiser in the game. In this game, 00 Gundam has a better close and ranged attack as well as stronger armor than Gundam Exia. However it has slower speed and boost compared to Exia.
- In Super Robot Wars Z2: Saisei-hen, the 00 Gundam's GN Shields and GN Field are omitted for unknown reasons. But unlike the original series, the Trans-Am System can be used with no drawbacks.
- In SD Gundam G Generations Cross Rays, the 00 Gundam's blueprint can be created by combining the design of any two units with the word "zero" in its name, including Wing Gundam Zero, Phoenix Zero, and even Moebius Zero.
