The gMS-κ GFreD, also known as Gundam FreD is a mobile suit appeared in television series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. It is piloted by Nyaan.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The sister unit of the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX, the GFreD is mostly identical to the former, but with a different color scheme, modified shoulders, and a new head design which carries two "Esbit" remote weapons as ears on the side of its head.

Armaments

• Vulcan

A set of four vulcan guns were located at GFreD's manubrium. They were used for close combat defense and were useful for intercepting incoming missiles, destroying mobile suit sensors, and attacking lightly-armored vehicles.

• Beam Saber

The GFreD is armed with a pair of beam sabers for melee combat, with their hilts featuring unique ring-shaped guards, which are stored at the rear waist armor when not in use. The beam saber emits high-energy Minovsky particles from an E-cap within the handle and contains them in a blade-shaped I-field. The resulting blade of superheated particles is able to cut through almost any material not treated with an anti-beam coating. The beam saber's E-cap is recharged using the mobile suit's reactor when the weapon is stored.

• Beam Rifle

The beam rifle is the primary ranged weapon of the GFreD.

• Shield

Mounted on the GFreD's left forearm, the shield serves as the MS's main defensive weapon. It is equipped with an I-Field Generator for blocking beam attacks

• Esbit

The GFreD is equipped with two stilleto-shaped remote weapons called "Esbits" stored on the "ears" of its head, each possessing a small beam gun.

Special Equipment & Features

• "Kappa" Psycommu System

The GFreD is equipped with a special type of Psycommu system similar to the GQuuuuuuX's Omega Psycommu. It enables the pilot to control the mobile suit and remote Psycommu based weapons directly with brainwaves alone. Like the Omega Psycommu, it can further enhance the capabilities of the mobile suit but usually requires a pilot with strong Newtype powers.

• Yomagn'tho Interface

The GFred was designed to interface with a firing mechanism attached to the Rose of Sharon to control and power the Yomagn'tho superweapon through the generation of a Zeknova detonation. When interfacing, the face of the GFreD opens up to reveal various ports that the firing mechanism's plugs attaches to.

• I-Field Generator

When Minovsky particles are released into the air or into open space, the positive and negative particles spontaneously align themselves into a three-dimensional cubic lattice. Due to the repulsive and electrostatic forces between the Minovsky particles, this lattice functions as a kind of force field, which is referred to as an I-Field. This field had difficulty permeating conductive materials like metal, water, and plasma, and it exerted a repulsive force against mega particles, allowing it to deflect enemy mega particle beams. Due to its high power requirements, the I-field generator originally could only be installed in large mobile weapons. When the generator was activated, the I-field formed an invisible barrier around the mobile weapon, protecting it from incoming beam attacks.

History

The GFreD is introduced to Nyaan at the Granada Navy Yard Research Laboratory. She learns that she is the third candidate to pilot the machine, as the previous two pilots were killed after being selected for testing.

Nyaan meets with Miguel Serveto, who is unveiled as a spy for Gihren Zabi. He confesses to being behind the deaths of the previous candidates and attempts to kill Nyaan to prevent her from becoming a "Diablo." However, Nyaan's presence activates the GFreD's Psycommu, and vaporizes Miguel with the machine's funnel bits.

The GFred would make its first sortie at the unveiling of the Yomagn'tho Solar Ray facility, where it would deploy alongside Kycilia Zabi's personal guards to destroy Gihren Zabi's MA-08 Big Zams, and it would succeed in destroying one of the Big Zams singlehandedly in close combat. Immediately afterwards, under secret orders from Kycilia, Nyaan, expresses her wish to see Shūji, and the GFred would enter the Yomagn'tho to interface with the Rose of Sharon, initiating a Zeknova Event that would power the Yomagn'tho, allowing it to forcibly teleport the space fortress A Baoa Qu and Zeon's National Defense Force into Earth orbit before destroying them completely by a singularity.

Nyaan recoils in pain while operating the Rose of Sharon, She entered the next code, only to discover that Yomagn'tho had a cooldown period, hindering her progress. Amate, piloting the GQuuuuuux, confronts her in the Yomagn'tho, she questions Nyaan's alliance with Zeon and declares her resolve to protect Lalah, who is inside the Rose of Sharon. The GQuuuuuuX breaks the time-freeze barrier around the Rose, sending a shockwave that knocks both it and GFreD into the chamber walls. Later, Amate and Nyaan intervene during a tense standoff between Char Aznable and Kycilia, prompting Char to make a quick escape with Amate. Disembarking the GFreD, Nyaan questions Kycilia's intentions upon seeing her prepare to kill Amate. Alarmed, she shoots Kycilia and escapes in the GFreD.

Char activates Yomagn'tho's true function to send the Rose of Sharon back to it's own universe just as Shūji's arrives in a white mobile suit. Amate, determined to protect Lalah, battles Shūji. Nyaan rushed between Machu and Shūji as they fought, pleading with them to cease their battle. In that moment, she reconnected with Amate through the Kira-Kira, expressing her regrets about her past actions, and Amate reassured her, explaining that her choices were driven by the need for survival. She encouraged Nyaan to become her Mav and fights against Shūji together.

The battle between the Gundam, GQuuuuuuX, and GFreD escalates as Shūji and the Gundam face off against Amate and Nyaan's synchronized teamwork. In a desperate move, Shūji commands the Gundam to grow in size, enabling it to grab and crush the GFreD. Forcing Nyaan to make a quick escape by ejecting the Core Fighter. Amate then decapitates the Gundam and pleads for Lalah's independence. Moved by her determination, Shūji ultimately concedes. Grateful, Lalah unleashes a Zeknova that envelops Shūji, Lalah, and Yomagn'tho before they all disappear.

Notes & Trivia

• Much like the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX, the "GFreD" name is derived from a metasyntactic variable, in this case the word "Fred".
  • The mobile suit also has a letter from the Greek alphabet. In this case, it's "κ", meaning Kappa, the 10th alphabet.
    • The "κ" greek alphabet could also be a nod or a homage to Kycilia Zabi, with Nyaan mentioning that the GFreD resembles Kycilia with her mask on.
• The way Gundam FreD was revealed, its color scheme, self-activation when Nyaan was in danger (with Nyaan being the "Third Candidate" of GFred), calls back to Shinji Ikari (Third Child) and EVA-01 of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Interestingly, this also seems to contradict what the director has said previously, denied any influence from Evangelion on the show.
  • The head armor design resembles Unit Null from shorts "Evangelion: Another Impact (Confidential)" created by Shinji Aramaki for Japan Animator Expo 2015; the mecha design is by Atsushi Takeuchi.[1]
• The subsidiary relationship between the GFreD and the GQuuuuuuX as sister units is similar to that of both the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee and the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
• According to the Metal Robot Spirits GFreD promotion scroll, the two Esbits on the GFred's head are called "Luna" and "Artemis". These names have connection to the Moon.
• The head of GFreD was originally an early design for the head of GMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX.
