The gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX (gMS-Ω ジークアクス Jī Emu Essu Omega Jīkuakusu?) (English pronunciation: G-Kwucks), also known as gMS-Ω Gundam QuuuuuuX (gMS-Ω ガンダム クアクス Jī Emu Essu Omega Gandamu Kuakusu?)[2] is the titular mobile suit from the series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. It is primarily piloted by Amate Yuzuriha.

A state-of-the-art mobile suit for Newtypes[3] developed by the Principality of Zeon after the One Year War, the GQuuuuuuX was the result of Zeon's advanced mobile suit technology since they reverse-engineered the RX-78-02 White Gundam captured by Col. Char Aznable in late U.C. 0079. The GQuuuuuuX was equipped with a Psycommu system Omega Type, a further development of Psycommu system which was supposed to have been prohibited as a taboo after the One Year War.[3] In addition to a beam saber and beam rifle, the suit is also equipped with a shield that could be equipped with an I-Field Generator. It is also equipped with a Core Fighter mechanism that functioned as a backpack, which can fly independently if separated.[3]

Armaments

  • Vulcan
A set of four vulcan guns were located at GQuuuuuuX's manubrium. They were used for close combat defense and were useful for intercepting incoming missiles, destroying mobile suit sensors, and attacking lightly-armored vehicles.
  • Beam Saber
The GQuuuuuuX is armed with a pair of beam sabers for melee combat, with their hilts featuring unique ring-shaped guards, which are stored at the rear waist armor when not in use. The beam saber emits high-energy Minovsky particles from an E-cap within the handle and contains them in a blade-shaped I-field. The resulting blade of superheated particles is able to cut through almost any material not treated with an anti-beam coating. The beam saber's E-cap is recharged using the mobile suit's reactor when the weapon is stored.
  • Beam Rifle
The beam rifle is the primary weapon of the GQuuuuuuX.
  • Tomenosuke Heat Hawk[3]
An axe-shaped close combat weapon, it uses a super-heated blade to cut through the armor of enemy MS or vehicles. The thermal energy is generated by the power output of the GQuuuuuuX's thermonuclear reactor and relayed through the MS' hands. The Tomenosuke Heat Hawk is a replica of the standard MS-06 Zaku heat hawk created by a private company, which was not part of the GQuuuuuuX's standard armament, and was instead taken from Jezzi's Zaku of the Pomeranians clan[2]. It features a much larger head, longer piping, and a shorter handle compared to the standard heat hawk.
  • Shield
Mounted on the GQuuuuuuX's left forearm, the shield serves as the MS's main defensive weapon. It is equipped with an I-Field Generator[3] for blocking beam attacks. The shield could also be used to deflect heat away from the mobile suit during atmospheric re-entry.
  • I-Field Generator
When Minovsky particles are released into the air or into open space, the positive and negative particles spontaneously align themselves into a three-dimensional cubic lattice. Due to the repulsive and electrostatic forces between the Minovsky particles, this lattice functions as a kind of force field, which is referred to as an I-Field. This field had difficulty permeating conductive materials like metal, water, and plasma, and it exerted a repulsive force against mega particles, allowing it to deflect enemy mega particle beams. Due to its high power requirements, the I-field generator originally could only be installed in large mobile weapons. When the generator was activated, the I-field formed an invisible barrier around the mobile weapon, protecting it from incoming beam attacks.

Special Equipment & Features

  • Core Fighter
The GQuuuuuuX is equipped with a Core Fighter which houses the mobile suit's cockpit, control systems, and thruster backpack. The Core Fighter can be ejected in case of emergency and functions independently as a fighter, and can function in space, air, and in water.
  • Dummies
Thanks to Minovsky particle interference, warfare in the Universal Century era relies heavily on visual sensors, which can be tricked by inflatable decoys that mimic mobile suits, asteroids, and even warships.
  • "Omega" Psycommu System
The Omega Psycommu[3]was a refined and compact version of the Alpha Psycommu System, but where the Alpha-type only controlled remote weapons, the Omega-type enabled the pilot to control the mobile suit with brainwaves alone[2]. The Omega Psycommu could further enhance the pilot's reaction times and consequently the mobile suit's performance, but it could only be activated by a pilot with strong Newtype power[2].
Activation of the Omega Psycommu system involved two steps: Firstly, a cassette-like activation key was inserted into a dedicated slot on the right side of the cockpit; Secondly, the pilot must have strong psychowaves to interact and unlock the system[2]. Once it was activated, the restraints that double as the head blade antenna were released, an interface for brainwave control appeared in the cockpit, and the mobile suit switched to a psycommu-controlled drive mode[3][2].

History

In UC 0085, the GQuuuuuuX was assigned to Lt. Col. Challia Bull's Sodon Fleet as authorized by Zeon High Command at Granada, on condition that the Psycommu System Omega-type was not to be used[2]. Despite said orders, Challia gave 2nd. Lt. Xavier Olivette the Omega Psycommu's activation key, and ordered him to sortie the GQuuuuuuX in search of the missing gMS-α Red Gundam and its pilot Char Aznable, which had been tracked down to the Izuma colony at Side 6. Xavier tries to contact the Red Gundam but was attacked instead leading to a fight, and he would attempt to activate the Omega Psycommu System to gain an advantage but would fail to do so, forcing the GQuuuuuuX to tackle the Red Gundam and crash it inside the colony. After a brief fight inside the colony that sees the GQuuuuuuX destroy the Red Gundam's Bits, the GQuuuuuuX becomes unresponsive, forcing Xavier to hide the mobile suit inside the colony's underground tunnel network to escape Side 6's MS-06-SSPEX Police Zaku Armored RRU Types.

Izuma resident Amate Yuzuriha, having been caught in the crossfire, hijacks the unattended GQuuuuuuX hidden underground by jumping into the cockpit, and manages to activate the Omega Psycommu just in time to defeat a military police Zaku using the Pomeranians Zaku's Tomenosuke Heat Hawk. After a brief chase where the GQuuuuuuX is ejected out into space by a military police Zaku, the GQuuuuuuX manages to defeat the pursuing Zaku out in space, and then escapes to the Pomeranians hideout.

The GQuuuuuuX would be studied by the Pomeranian's technicians, and is made to become the group's main mobile suit for use in Clan Battles to replace their personal Zaku that was damaged in the previous attack. Amate would pilot the GQuuuuuuX again in her first Clan Battle alongside Shuji Itō's Red Gundam against the Four Snake Eyes pair of Zakus, where despite their inexperience the ad-hoc teamwork of both Gundam pilots would carry the team to victory.[2].

As part of the Pomerianians, the GQuuuuuuX along with the Red Gundam would continue to rack up victories in Clan Battles. However, during the battle against the CRS clan lead by ex-Federation ace pilot Shiiko Sugai and her custom gMS-01 Gelgoog, the GQuuuuuuX would end up being sidelined due to Machu's inexperience, with Sugai and her MAV attempting to destroy the Red Gundam.[4]

In the next Clan Battle versus the Binarys clan made up of former Black Tri-Stars members, the GQuuuuuuX ends up being piloted by Nyaan, who substitutes for Machu due to the latter being held up by Xavier. During the battle the Omega Psycommu inexplicably responds to Nyaan, allowing her to finally pilot the GQuuuuuuX to its fullest, giving her the edge needed to prevail against their opponents, much to Machu's shock.[5]

Pomeranians leader Annqi cuts a deal with Challia to return both GQuuuuuuX and the Red Gundam and disclose Shuji's whereabouts after spying on Amate in exchange for a large bounty. Amate later overhears Annqi's plan to turn over both Gundams and reluctantly works with Nyaan to plan their escape with Shuji.[6]

Nyaan again pilots the GQuuuuuuX and begins escaping Side 6 with Shuji during their clan battle with the Twelve Olympians clan. However, the battle was a ruse to assassinate Kycilia Zabi, which led to their plan being ruined. Nyaan decides to abandon their plan, urging Shuji to escape with her leaving Amate behind. Just then, the Red Gundam triggers another Zeknova and vanishes, taking Shuji along with it. Amate is labeled a terrorist by the military police and tries to flee in the deserted GQuuuuuuX, which begins to react to her frustrations. However, she is ultimately captured by Challia, who takes both Amate and the GQuuuuuuX into custody aboard the Sodon.[7]

Amate receives help from an unknown benefactor, allowing her to escape the Sodon and descend to Earth in the GQuuuuuuX. The mobile suit detaches its Core Fighter for her safety as it crashes into the ocean. After she landed, she is taken to a brothel for recovery. Later, Amate returns to the Core Fighter, dives into the ocean, and finds the GQuuuuuuX next to a massive craft. As she retrieves the mobile suit and surfaces, Challia and the Sodon arrive to apprehend her.[8]

Amate trains with Challia for her first proper military engagement, as Zeon unveils its new Solar Ray. When Kycilia eliminated her brother Gihren, she takes command of the Solar Ray. Challia orders Amate in the GQuuuuuux to reawaken the Rose of Sharon within the Solar Ray.

Notes and Trivia

  • The name "GQuuuuuuX" is based off the word "qux", a common metasyntactic variable in computer programming.[9]
  • The GQuuuuuuX is the first main character Gundam that is not explicitly referred to as a "Gundam" in marketing, as all of its promotional material and merchandise only refer to it as the "GQuuuuuuX" and not the "Gundam QuuuuuuX". Contrast to the YG-111 Gundam G-Self, which has the "Gundam" name prominently displayed alongside its given name.
  • The GQuuuuuuX is the first Gundam-type mobile suit to feature vulcan guns at the manubrium instead of forehead, collars or chest area.
  • According to the show's director, the main Gundam series besides 0079 that inspired him while working on Gundam GQ were War in the Pocket and F91. He also stated that they created the series as a "very Gundam-inspired show", dismissing fan speculation that Anno and other Gainax/Khara staff members created Gundam GQ as a heavily Evangelion-inspired anime.[10]
  • The Gundam GQuuuuuuX has many similarities with the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn:
    • Both mobile suits have a head that transform between two modes: a standard mode, which is the default mode with their V-fins retracted and close to the head's contour, and the dual-eye sensor hidden; and a secondary mode, where their v-fins extend outward to reveal their Gundam faces, while their enhanced newtype systems activate.
    • Both mobile suits have a transformable cockpit with additional controls that are revealed during its secondary mode, and both grant their pilots the ability to control the mobile suits via thought alone.
    • Being the sister unit to the gMS-κ GFreD, their subsidiary relationship is similar to that of the Unicorn and its sister unit, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee.
