The GAT-X133 Sword Calamity Gundam (aka Sword Calamity) is a prototype mobile suit introduced in the original design series SEED-MSV. It is piloted by Rena Imelia, Edward Harrelson and Four Socius.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The GAT-X133 Sword Calamity Gundam is a melee-combat variant of the artillery focused GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam and was developed as part of the "Rebuild 1416 Program".[1][2][3] The goal of this program was to create versatile units based on the Calamity Gundam, making it similar in concept to the Striker Packs system developed for the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, but this program also included changes to the mobile suit itself.[1][2][3] The Sword Calamity replaced most of the original Calamity's weapons with melee weaponry mainly derived from those of the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X02 Sword Strike Gundam.[1][2][3] Its main weapon is a pair of large anti-ship swords that also function as laser guns.[1][2][3] Other melee weapons included pairs of beam boomerangs, rocket anchors, and combat knives.[1][2][3] The only weapon of the original Calamity to be retained is the chest-mounted energy cannon, but its power was reduced to extend Sword Calamity's operating time.[1][2]
To support the changes made to its weaponry, the mobile suit's fire control system and vetronics have been adjusted.[1][2] A Natural-use OS was also installed, allowing it to be used by normal pilots.[2][3] Due to the reduction in the mobile suit's weight, its mobility and maneuverability have been improved too.[2][3] Like the original Calamity, the Sword Calamity was equipped with Trans-Phase armor.[1][2][3] Three Sword Calamity units were produced in total.[1][2][3] Unlike Unit 2 and Unit 3, Unit 1 was initially manufactured as a Calamity Gundam before being converted into a Sword Calamity.[2][4] Furthermore, Unit 1 was designed to gather data for other machines of the Rebuild 1416 Program, so it retained the original Calamity's color scheme on its unmodified parts.[2][3][4] However, the program was later dropped as Earth Alliance Forces switched to the GAT-01A1 Dagger as the base machine for their multi-purpose MS.[3][4]
Armaments[]
- "Schwert Gewehr" Anti-ship Sword
- The main weapon of the Sword Calamity Gundam is its two "Schwert Gewehr" anti-ship swords which are based on the one used by the Sword Strike Gundam.[1][2][3] The "Schwert Gewehr" is a large physical sword that combined a laser blade with an alloy blade, enabling it to be used for underwater combat as well.[2] Usually, one "Schwert Gewehr" is wielded in each hand, but it can also be wielded with both hands by stacking the two swords on top of each other.[2][5] Unlike the Sword Strike's prototype model, Sword Calamity's "Schwert Gewehr" has a fully functional laser gun built into the end of its grip.[1][2] The laser gun can be fired when the sword is handheld or stored on the backpack.[1][2]
- "Midas Messer" Beam Boomerang
- Stored on each shoulder, the pair of "Midas Messer" beam boomerangs are throwing weapons that emit a small beam blade when used.[1][2][3] They can return to the owner after being thrown, often catching enemy units by surprise. It is the same type of armament as used by Sword Strike, but the design of the grip and other details are different.[2][3] Due to the equipping of this weapon, the Sword Calamity has different shoulder armor from the original Calamity and lacks the latter's shoulder-mounted high-mobility thrusters.[1][2]
- "Panzer Eisen" Rocket Anchor
- Sword Calamity is equipped with two forearm-mounted "Panzer Eisen" rocket anchors, which are of a similar type as the one on the Sword Strike.[1][3] They are grappling claws that are shot out on a line to capture or disorient an enemy unit.[2] They can also be used to anchor the Sword Calamity in place.[2]
- "Armor Schneider" Combat Knife
- A small physical blade that is easy to wield and hence excels in super close-range combat.[2] The Sword Calamity is equipped with two combat knives as backup weapons, and unlike the ones used by the Strike Gundam, these knives are not of the folding type.[1][2][3] When not in use, each knife is stored in a sheath located on the outer side of the leg.[1][2]
- "Scylla" 580mm Multi-phase Energy Cannon
- Mounted in the chest, this is the same energy weapon as installed in the original Calamity Gundam, but its maximum output was reduced to 70% to extend the Sword Calamity's operating time.[1][2] As the Sword Calamity was designed primarily for melee combat, this weapon is said to be rarely used.[2]
Special Equipment & Features[]
History[]
Built as a melee-combat variant of the GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam, the GAT-X133 Sword Calamity was completed at around the same time as the original Calamity. Three Sword Calamity units were produced in total, and they were piloted by Naturals and Combat Coordinators. Unit 1 was created to gather data and was put into storage after that. Unit 2 and Unit 3 were deployed in combat after numerous tests and were piloted by Earth Alliance aces Edward Harrelson and Four Socius. During the Third Battle of Victoria, these two units were under the command of Rondo Gina Sahaku and played an important role in the Earth Alliance's victory over ZAFT.
Four Socius and his Sword Calamity were eventually given to Orb Union's Sahaku family by Muruta Azrael, and later attacked the Kusanagi to kill Cagalli Yula Athha on Gina's orders, but the plan was thwarted by Gai Murakumo and his MBF-P03secondL Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second L. Edward's unit later took part in the Second Battle of Jachin Due and during the battle, he was convinced that he should rebel against the Alliance. After the war, Edward defected to the United States of South America with his mobile suits, including his Sword Calamity. To stop Edward, Sword Calamity Unit 1 was taken out of storage and assigned to Earth Alliance ace, Rena Imelia. Edward defeated Rena, but both pilots were injured. The two damaged Sword Calamity units were then recovered and repaired by Kaite Madigan, who added them to his MS collection. However, Kaite promised Jess Rabble that he would give Edward's unit back if Edward ever need it.
