G.A.R.M. R&D (Genetic Advanced Reproductive Medical Research & Development) is a company introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Overview

G.A.R.M. R&D is a biotechnologies company and the leading specialist in Coordinator production. Its main facility is located at the L4 space colony Mendel.

History

In the C.E. 40's, G.A.R.M. R&D's chief scientist, Doctor Ulen Hibiki, began a program to create the Ultimate Coordinator, seeking to eliminate the negative traits inherent in the normal Coordinator process. However, initial progress was minimal due to a lack of resources. In C.E. 46, the Atlantic Federation industrialist Al Da Flaga visited G.A.R.M. R&D to commission Ulen to create a clone for him, promising to finance his project if he did so. Ulen agreed and G.A.R.M. R&D created several clones of Al, all of whom possessed shortened lifespans due to the imperfect cloning process. After receiving Al's funding, G.A.R.M. R&D created the Artificial Womb, a machine capable of both modifying the genetic structure and maintaining the life of a fetus outside of the mother's womb. In C.E. 55, after several failures, Ulen finally succeeded, having used his own son, Kira Hibiki, as the final test subject, turning him into the Ultimate Coordinator.

Following the success of the project, Mendel was attacked by Blue Cosmos members. The group’s attack resulted in the deaths of Ulen and his wife Via Hibiki, along with the destruction of the project data and the G.A.R.M. R&D Lab. However, Kira and his Natural twin sister Cagalli Hibiki survived the attack, having been placed in the care of Via’s sister Caridad Yamato beforehand. Despite the loss of its chief research scientist, G.A.R.M. R&D continued to operate for several years. The company went bankrupt in C.E. 68 following the bio disaster at the Mendel colony forcing all its inhabitants to evacuate, resulting in the loss of their primary facility.
