Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island (機動戦士ガンダム ククルス・ドアンの島?) is an anime movie directed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko,[13] that premiered on June 3, 2022.[14] This film is an adaptation of the 15th episode of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, which aired in 1979.[16]

Synopsis[]

After enduring a defensive battle in Jaburo, the Earth Federation Forces plan to launch an operation to capture Odessa, the headquarters of Zeon's Earth Attack Force. Amuro and the White Base head to Belfast to resupply before the mission. However, the White Base receives new orders; to head to an uninhabited island known as the "Island of No Return" to wipe out stragglers. Amuro sets out on the island in search of soldiers that were left behind but instead finds a group of children and a Zaku that shouldn't be there. Losing the Gundam in a battle, Amuro meets a man who calls himself Cucuruz Doan. Uncovering the secrets of the island, can Amuro find the Gundam again and escape safely……?[17]

Plot[]

On a seemingly uninhabited island, a deformed Zaku engaged and destroyed two GMs and the Gunperry transporting them while a group of children watch and cheer for the Zaku and its pilot, Doan.

Following the victory at Jaburo, Bright Noa, now promoted to Lieutenant Commander, is assigned by Gopp to head through Las Palmas alongside other Federation forces against the Zeon forces. During which, a commander requests Bright to pass through the island of Alegranza, the northernmost island of the Canary Islands, due to Zeon remnants in the area having taken out two GMs. As ordered, Bright passes the island and dispatches Amuro Ray's RX-78-02 Gundam, Kai Shiden's RX-77-02 Guncannon with Job John and Hayato Kobayashi using the Gunperry and remaining at a landing zone for them.

The pair split off as Kai found plowed fields near the island's lighthouse as well as children who began pelting his mobile suit with rocks. Meanwhile, Amuro followed a set of Zaku footprints near a cliff, where he was attacked from behind by a lone Zaku II. Amuro was nearly pushed off the cliff but was able to shove the Zaku off. Having lost his beam rifle to the attack, the two engaged in melee combat, but the Zaku got the upper hand as it dodged Amuro's attack and cut through the Gundam's shield. While Amuro discarded the shield and continues fighting, the ground beneath him collapsed after he jumped to avoid the Zaku's attack.

By this time, Kai returns back to the Gunperry. Unable to contact Amuro, and with a storm approaching, Bright ordered Kai, Job and Hayato to return and said they would continue the search later on. Meanwhile, Amuro, unconscious, was dreaming of his hardships until that point: the attack on Side 7, his father's obsession over the Gundam, his mother berating him for fighting in the war, and his battle with Char Aznable during atmospheric reentry. Once he woke up, he found himself bandaged on a bed in a beach shack. Upon seeing him, a group of children rushed to their caretaker, a farmer named Cucuruz Doan. Amuro realized that Doan was the pilot of the Zaku that attacked him and demanded him to return the Gundam. When Doan refused to answer and the children revealed their true disdain for soldiers like him, Amuro left to search for the Gundam.

By sunset, Amuro reached the edge of the island's volcanic crater but found nothing. Sensing Cara's concern for Amuro being exposed outdoors, Doan asked her to go find him. As the children and Doan were discussing how one of the children, Julian, was about to celebrate his 7th birthday the day after tomorrow, Cara brought Amuro back for dinner, much to the annoyance of the the other children. In spite of the children's hostility, Doan promised that Amuro would begin working for his meals the next day. That night, Cara noticed Doan working another one of his many tireless nights, but he assured her that his work was almost complete.

Bright recalls slapping Amuro.

On a Dish heading for the Federation naval base in Belfast, Admiral Johann Ibrahim Revil and Elran were coordinating the attack on Odessa. Revil wished to have the White Base close to him and ordered it to head for Belfast. When Bright was informed of this and ordered to depart immediately, he was outraged by the abrupt news but was forced to inform the crew that they had to leave Amuro behind and depart for Belfast. Because of this, Sleggar Law and Kai began planning their own rescue mission for Amuro.

Meanwhile, M'Quve, the commander of the Zeon forces on Earth, contacted the Federation attack force led by Gopp, warning them to cancel the attack on Gibraltar, threatening to destroy major Earth cities should he refuse. However, Gopp simply ignored the threat. At the same time, the Southern Cross Corps, piloting MS-06GD Zaku High Mobility (Surface Type)s, defeated a group of GMs attacking Casablanca and rescued allied forces. After the battle, the team's latest member, Danan Rashica, remarked that he joined because of his interest in the team's former captain, Doan, wanting to see how strong he was up close. He was quickly cut off by the group's new leader, Egba Atler, who held his Zaku at knife point and warned him never to speak of the traitor's name.

That night, Doan stayed up late studying the schematics of a rocket. Lope, one of the children, was crying, causing him to experience a flashback to his time as the leader of the Southern Cross Corps. When he led the Corps fighting through a city, he heard the sound of Lope crying, helplessly tugging on the lifeless body of an adult. He then had a conversation with Cara, with Cara begging him not to die for their sake.

The next morning, Amuro began helping with Doan's farm work. He was impressed by the friendship between the children and Doan's care towards them. He went off in search of the Gundam again, but not before receiving a Zeon field cap and a water canteen from Doan. In the White Base, Katz, Letz, Kikka and Haro locked themselves in the ship's bathroom when they learned that Amuro was being left behind, refusing to eat or leave. However, Sleggar tricked Kikka into opening the door with the promise of ice cream. Sleggar and Kai then privately invite Hayato and Job to aid in their search. As they could not fit a second mobile suit, since they'd need to accommodate the Gundam on the return trip, Sleggar decides to ask for Sayla's help as he would need to ride on her Core Booster to travel.

Upon returning from another empty search, Amuro learns that the lighthouse's water pump burst during a downpour. Seeing the trouble they were in, Amuro volunteers to help Doan and Marcos repair the broken pipe before returning to his search. Once the water is brought back to the lighthouse, Doan leaves on a small trip with Marcos secretly following. It soon turns out that Doan dumped the remains of the defeated GMs and even another Zaku, in the sea, and kept his old submarine, Zaku II, and the Gundam in a hidden cove. Marcos would confront Doan, wishing to fight beside him using the white unit he had taken the other day. By coincidence, Amuro also finds the base and asks for his Gundam back, but Marcos chooses to attack Amuro to prove that he is stronger and a better pilot. This fight, however, only angers Doan to a point where he shouts for both to leave immediately. He then rechecks the status of his abandoned control center, revealing inactive nuclear missiles.

At Gibraltar, M'Quve receives a report from Morocco of a signal jamming at Point C.A. Believing this to be a saboteur rather than an actual operative, M'Quve orders for the Southern Cross Team to investigate. As Danan complains at the lousy scouting mission, Wald Ren suggests that culprit could be none other than Doan, irking all members of the team. In the Federation Base, Sleggar and the other pilots depart, while Bright, having caught on to their plan, intentionally delays the White Base's departure but is startled to learn of group of Zeon soldiers heading for Alegranza. Similarly, Marcos notices the sudden parting of clouds, and he and Amuro immediately dash back, where Cara is struggling to console the terrified children.

As the electricity in the building was broken, Amuro immediately heads towards its generators and is able to quickly fix it, allowing the use of both power in the building as well as the lighthouse itself. To his surprise, the cause of the sudden change in winds was actually the Gunperry, which had come to rescue him. Unfortunately, Doan notices a second ship belonging to his former team. As the situation had now changed, he asks Marcos to come with him and defend the island while Amuro also volunteers to help. At the other side of the island, the Gunperry and the Southern Cross Team had already taken notice of one another as Egba leaves to attack the enemy units while the rest of the team are to continue the mission.

While diving towards the cove, Amuro passes out underwater and Marcos is forced to resuscitate him while Doan leaves on his Zaku to fight. At the same time, the White Base's units are handily defeated as Sayla is forced to crash land, which severs the head of Sleggar's GM. Additionally, Hayato's Guncannon was also destroyed while Kai's legs were cut off. Before Kai could be struck down, however, Doan would suddenly appear and stop his former teammates. All the while, Yun Sanho and Wald, whose support flyer was destroyed by Sayla and Sleggar, would eventually reach the cove, and the latter would exit his unit to search for the control center.

Danan, having become excited to finally see the man in question, immediately attacks Doan relentlessly with both his machine gun and heat hawk. Despite this, Doan's superior skill allows him to dodge Danan's attacks before cutting him down with his heat hawk. Underground, Wald reboots the system and sets the missiles on a launch timer. As he returns back to his Zaku, Sanho notices stragglers inside the base and decides to chase. While checking the hangers, he finds a curtained red foot, as he opens, it is revealed to be the Gundam, which was now being piloted by Amuro.

Sanho is taken by surprise and is killed when its beam saber is thrust through the cockpit. Wald would accidentally walk into the situation, and was crushed to death underneath the Gundam's foot. Above, Doan would reluctantly kill Selma Livens before engaging Egba. Coincidentally, Blanca, Doan's goat, would flee in a panic due to the fighting and would run into the White Base's pilots, and the groups merged as they followed Doan and Egba's battle to the island's crater.

Tired from his fights against Danan and Selma, Doan's right arm and heat hawk were severed by Egba though he would remain defiant and began hurling rocks towards Egba. This would buy enough time for Amuro to save the day by engaging Egba with both the Gundam's beam sabers and its vulcan guns. Amuro would eventually succeed in tipping Egba over a cliff with the vulcans before cutting his unit apart with the beam sabers. Despite this, the nuclear missiles underground finally launch and reach the sky, beyond the Federation's reach. As the missiles separate, however, they begin exploding mid-air, the true result from Doan's work at night.

Upon seeing that his plan had failed, M'Quve was disappointed but amused, commenting that the culprit may have had a similar taking to culture before leaving. With Amuro and the Gundam returned, he and the remaining White Base pilots were ready to return, but Amuro notices that Doan's past would still linger, so he chooses to help Doan by hurling his damaged Zaku into the sea. While Doan's orphans are angered by this, Doan replies that Amuro had done the right thing, and he and the others bid them farewell.

The next morning, with all their crewmembers safe, Bright finally orders for the White Base to travel to Belfast. On its way, it makes a small pass through Alegranza, with Doan and the others greeting them as they depart.

Production[]

It was first announced at the 2nd Gundam Conference on September 15, 2021.[18][19] It was announced that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko would be the director and it would focus on episode 15, Cucuruz Doan’s Island from Mobile Suit Gundam, depicting it from a new angle.[20]

The first key visual and trailer were released on December 21, 2021 at about 07:00 JST.[21][22] Gundam.Info published the staff on the same day.[1] On January 19, 2022, the GundamInfo channel uploaded the first trailer with English subs.[23]

According to an interview with Yasuhiko published in the December 2021 issue of Gundam Ace, this movie was not an adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin MSD Cucuruz Doan's Island, but the manga was the reason for the start of the project.[24]

On February 3, 2022 07:00 JST, the release date, synopsis, main cast, and more character designs were revealed.[14][17]

On March 9 ("Zaku Day"), Cucuruz Doan's voice actor and mobile suit were revealed.

The English dub was directed by Stephanie Sheh,[25] and recorded by NYAV Post.[12]

Releases[]

The film premiered in Japanese theaters on June 3, 2022.[14] A limited edition Blu-ray set with English subtitles and other theater goods could be purchased by movie-goers in Japan.

ODEX first distributed the film internationally in Malaysia (June 3 to 5 at Mid Valley Megamall's Golden Screen Cinemas with English subtitles),[2][26] Singapore (June 3 to 4 at Cathay Cineplexes with English and Chinese subtitles),[3][27] Brunei (June 3 at The Mall Cineplexes, Times Cineplexes and ONE Cineplexes with English, Simplified Chinese and Bahasa Melayu subtitles),[4] Vietnam (June 3 at Lotte Cinemas),[5] Indonesia (from June 10 at select CGV Cinemas),[28][6] and the Philippines (from June 17 at SM Cinemas with English subtitles).[7]

Medialink released the film in Hong Kong with English and Chinese subtitles, premiering on August 13 at MOViE MOViE anifest 2022.[29] Regular cinema screenings begun on August 25.[8]

On September 9, Crunchyroll announced they would be releasing the film in select theatres in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia with both English dubbed and subtitled screenings.[30] Tickets went on sale for North American screenings on September 27 & 28 in the US [31] and September 29 and October 1 in Canada. Ticket sales in Australia began on September 14 for screenings on September 29.[9]

Screenings in the UK were originally scheduled for September 21 and 22 with ticket sales to commence on September 16 [30] but, due to the death of the country's monarch, Crunchyroll removed the dates from their news article on the 9th, stating they would update it with more information on the release when available.[9] On September 12, UK cinema chain Cineworld listed bookable screenings on their website (subtitled on the 21 and dubbed on the 22). On September 13, a 12A rating, trailer and poster were added to Cineworld's website.[32][15] On September 14, Crunchyroll added the UK release dates back to their news article, all affirming that the original release would be happening as initially scheduled.[33]

On April 27, 2023, the movie was made available for streaming with subtitles and a dub on Crunchyroll's website.[10][11]

Notes & Trivia[]

Comparison with the TV Episode[]

  • In the TV Episode, the unnamed island is called "Point 305", while the island in the movie is referred to as Alegranza at Point C.A..
  • Cara takes Rolland Chuan's place as one of the female orphans that lived with Doan.
  • There are total 20 orphans that lived with Doan instead of the original episode's 3.
  • In the TV episode, Doan and the orphans lived in a small log cabin. In the movie, they now live in an abandoned lighthouse.
  • While Doan wears post-desertion civilian attire while piloting the Zaku in the TV Episode, his movie counterpart wears a full pilot suit while he pilots his unit.
  • In the TV episode, Doan emphasized mostly non-lethal attacks and allowed a Federation crew to live albeit having their weapons stolen and being tied or too injured to fight. In the movie, Doan has little qualms in killing his former allies or the GM pilots to preserve the secrecy of the island, simply allowing Amuro to live as he took pity since he was already incapacitated.
  • In the TV series, the White Base was originally departing North America before reaching Odessa, in Asia, which placed Doan's island likely in the Pacific. Here, like in the Origin manga, Jaburo takes place before Odessa which fits the context of Doan being in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic.
    • In the TV Episode, Ryu Jose and Hayato Kobayashi flew the Gunperry that dropped Amuro while Ryu also flew the Core Fighter that assisted Amuro after the Gundam was returned. As Ryu was already dead and Jaburo was finished in the manga, his roles were taken over by Job John and Sayla respectively though the latter would use the Core Booster instead.
    • In the TV series, Sleggar only piloted mobile crafts in space as Jaburo occurred shortly before the White Base left for space. As Jaburo and Odessa are reversed in this timeline, he is able to use his custom GM as in the Origin manga.
    • In the TV episode, the Gundam was still having issues testing the Core Block System which resulted in Amuro departing with the Core Fighter alone to survey the island. Here, it follows the Origin's timeline, where the Gundam's integration was already complete after Jaburo.
    • Additionally, instead of Amuro travelling to the island alone, he travels with most of the White Base's other pilots.
    • In the manga, Sayla only learns how to fly the Core Booster after the ship passes both the Atlantic and Gibraltar, where Sleggar's custom GM had been damaged beyond repair by Char. In the movie, Sayla is already the Core Booster's pilot and Sleggar's custom GM is still usable.
  • In one of Amuro's dream flashbacks during the atmospheric entry, Char utilizes his own custom-colored High Mobility Type Zaku II instead of his signature commander-type Zaku.
  • While Doan's reason for his desertion is largely the same as the TV Episode, the movie does not mention of his accidental stray shot that killed any of the orphans' parents, as the causalities were also likely caused by his teammates or by his own collateral.
  • In the TV Episode, two Zakus were dispatched to Point 305 to locate Doan. In the movie, The Southern Cross Corps were dispatched to locate the hidden ballistic missile on Alegranza while searching for (and to kill) Doan.
  • In the TV Episode, the Core Fighter and Doan's Zaku was hidden behind the waterfall. In the movie, both the RX-78-02 Gundam and Doan's Zaku is stored underneath Alegranza's hidden base.
  • In the TV Episode, the remaining Zaku II was defeated by Doan via the Mobile Suit Martial Arts. In the movie, Egba (the remaining member) was killed by Amuro instead.
