Miriallia Haw (ミリアリア・ハウ Miriaria Hau?) is a character introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. She reappeared in the sequel series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Personality & Character[]

Miriallia had a cheerful and positive attitude towards anyone she knew and was very kind to her close friends. Unlike her fellow Heliopolis classmate Flay Allster, Miriallia didn't judge people based on their genetic type and had a close friendship with Kira Yamato, despite her being a Natural and him a Coordinator. She respected and admired Coordinators, something she found special in Kira, and later, she developed the will to fight and protect her friends, even going so far as to acknowledge Kira's will to protect her and everyone aboard Archangel and becoming a source of support for him and others.

Following the death of her boyfriend Tolle Koenig, Miriallia's emotional state became increasingly low. She briefly lost control of herself when she accidentally encountered Dearka Elsman, and because of his childish tantrums, tried to kill him (thinking he was responsible for Tolle's death) in revenge. After finding out it was Athrun who killed Tolle, she gave in and matured, admitting that killing Athrun wouldn't bring Tolle back and that holding on to hatred could be poisonous and corrupt a person's mind.

By the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Miriallia continued to mature, while retaining her personality, and became braver in her resolve to stop conflicts.

History[]

First Alliance-PLANT War[]

Battle of Heliopolis[]

In C.E. 71, Miriallia was living peacefully in the neutral Orb Union space colony Heliopolis. With her boyfriend, Tolle Koenig, and their friends Kira Yamato, Sai Argyle, and Kuzzey Buskirk, she was enrolled in a robotics engineering university. This ended on January 15, C.E. 71, when Heliopolis was raided by ZAFT in search of prototype Earth Alliance mobile suits that had been secretly produced in the colony.[1]

The fighting ultimately destroyed the colony, and Miriallia and her friends ended up as refugees on the Earth Alliance battleship, the Archangel. When Kira was unofficially drafted to pilot the remaining EA mobile suit, the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, Miriallia suggested they also help out by joining the ship's crew. Miriallia was assigned to monitor and communicate with the Archangel's mobile suit and mobile armor complement, mainly relaying messages between Kira and Lieutenant Mu La Flaga to the ship's captain Murrue Ramius and executive officer Natarle Badgiruel.[2][3]

Miriallia and Sai helped Kira when he returned the captured Lacus Clyne to ZAFT and along with Tolle, were understanding when they learn ZAFT's GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam pilot Athrun Zala was a childhood friend of Kira's.[4] After rendezvousing with the Earth Alliance's 8th space fleet, Miriallia and the rest choose to stay aboard the Archangel despite being offered a discharge. This act convinced Kira to continue as pilot of the Strike, as he didn't want his friends to be in danger.[5]

After being diverted from their original atmospheric re-entry point, the Archangel visited the Orb Union for repairs.[6] Captain Murrue Ramius arranged a meeting between her young charges and their parents.[7] Upon leaving Orb to continue on to the main Alliance headquarters, the Archangel come under attack again. In the ensuing skirmishes, ZAFT pilot Nicol Amalfi was killed by Kira, Kira was reported MIA, Tolle was killed by Athrun, and ZAFT pilot Dearka Elsman was taken prisoner, and his GAT-X103 Buster Gundam recaptured.[8][9]

Miriallia was upset at the loss of her boyfriend and snapped when Dearka unknowingly insulted Tolle, leading to her attempting to stab Dearka with a knife. Sai intervened before she could fatally injure him, but Flay Allster tried to shoot him in the chaos out of racial hatred. Miriallia came to her senses, saving Dearka's life.[10] (The manga expands this by showing Miriallia remembering discussing Kira being a Coordinator, with Tolle. Tolle remarked that it was hard to believe that Kira was a stereotypical Coordinator (dangerous and aggressive) and he and Miriallia both agreed to defend Kira no matter what.) Knowing that Dearka was no different, she stopped Flay while vehemently denying Flay's claims that they were the same. This was the start of a better relationship between Miriallia and Dearka, especially when Dearka confirmed he didn't kill Tolle.[10][11]

During the Battle of JOSH-A, the Alliance leaders attempted to wipe out a majority of ZAFT's forces by sacrificing their less desirable forces, including the Archangel and its crew, who were held with contempt for their association with Kira. Kira returned just in time to save the Archangel, using the stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam.[12] After the battle, Miriallia and the rest of the crew defected to Orb, where Captain Murrue Ramius allowed anyone unhappy with the defection to seek sanctuary. When Kuzzey left the ship, Miriallia was promoted to his former position as a communications operator. She continued in this position until the war's end.[13]

Dearka was released, but told by Miriallia that the Buster would stay in their possession. Motivated by her determination and at odds with how xenophobic ZAFT had become under Patrick Zala, Dearka defected from ZAFT and joined the Archangel crew to use the Buster in defense of Miriallia and her fellow Naturals, Orb, and its ideals. He was soon joined by Athrun, with his new ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam.[13] After learning who was really responsible for Tolle's death, Mirallia ran off crying. When Dearka tried to talk to her, she angrily stated the obvious: killing Athrun won't bring Tolle back. Athrun overheard this and was impacted by Miriallia's words, expressing similar views later.[14]

As the war entered its final stages, Miriallia warm-up to Dearka. Although she still mourned Tolle, she accepted her new ally and told him to be careful during the Second Battle of Jachin Due.[15]

After the war, Miriallia returned to her home in Orb, and one night she was alone, silently mourning an old photo of herself and Tolle from their days at Heliopolis.[16]

Second Alliance-PLANT War[]

Two years after the first war, Miriallia was working as a freelance photographer, covering events such as the damage caused by Junius 7 and Meer Campbell's promotional appearance on Earth. However, her new career actually doubled as a front for her actions as an agent of Terminal, the information group allied with many former members of the Three Ships Alliance. By chance, she met Athrun again and learned of his rejoining ZAFT. Athrun asked about her relationship with Dearka Elsman.[17] She didn't reply, but later told others she had dumped Dearka.[18]

Miriallia arranged a meeting between Athrun and their mutual friends Cagalli Yula Athha and Kira. At this meeting, Athrun told the others that Cagalli needed to return to Orb, while they inform him that special forces from ZAFT had attempted to assassinate Lacus.[17] Before the Archangel's intervention in the Battle of Crete, Miriallia returned to the Archangel, much to the delight of the crew, and took up her former position as a communications officer.[18][19] She continued to photographically log key events of the war for the sake of history.

After ZAFT's attack on Orb, Miriallia, along with the rest of the Archangel's crew, was officially incorporated into the Orb Union military and given the rank of Ensign. Miriallia continued to serve aboard the Archangel until the end of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, and participated in both the Attack on Requiem Station One and the Battle of Messiah.[20]

Relationships[]

Tolle Koenig[]

Miriallia and Tolle had been dating since their time together at the Orb space colony Heliopolis. The two were very close, and were very supportive of each other. When Tolle decided to stay on board the Archangel, Miriallia chose to stay on board with him. After Tolle’s death, Miriallia became heartbroken and distressed. When the captured Dearka unknowingly mocked Tolle’s death in front of her, she attempted to stab with a knife in a moment of emotional distress. After finding out that Athrun was the person that killed Tolle, Miriallia became overwhelmed with emotion, but refused to take her feelings out on him, telling Dearka that, even if she killed Athrun, it wouldn’t bring Tolle back to life.

Dearka Elsman[]

He and Miriallia had an acquainted relationship after Tolle died in the war where Miriallia thought that Dearka was the one who killed her boyfriend. In the beginning, they had a nasty relationship when Dearka teased Miriallia (who was crying because of the death of Tolle) that crybabies like her shouldn't be on board a battleship if the only thing she could do was cry (a point that Dearka mentions that "Maybe you get a weakling boyfriend that died in this war" by chance) causing her to develop a hatred to him and try to stab him. As Flay also tries to kill Dearka for reasons that all Coordinators are the same, she then intervenes responding that they (Flay and Miriallia) are not the same even though both of them lost their loved ones at the hands of Coordinators. They then start a friendly relationship when Dearka said that he wasn't the one who killed her boyfriend. By C.E. 73, it is said that they were dating, but Miriallia dumped him.

Kira Yamato[]

Kira is a good friend of Miriallia’s who attended the same university at Heliopolis. During her time on the Archangel, Miriallia, along with the rest of the crew, grew to rely on Kira for their continued survival, and would become afraid for the ship’s safety when he wasn’t there. When Kira attempted to liberate Lacus from her captivity aboard the Archangel, Miriallia, along with Sai, chose to help Kira. After finding out that Athrun was the one to kill Tolle, Miriallia was compelled by Kira’s words to not seek revenge for Tolle’s death, knowing that it wouldn’t amount to anything except to continue the cycle of hatred and bloodshed.
After the war, Kira and Miriallia kept in contact, and during the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Kira brought Miriallia back to the Archangel where she resumed her post as the ship’s CIC operator. After returning to the Archangel, she told Kira that she’d do her best to protect the ship that meant so much to her in her own way, just as he did. Implying that she had been inspired by Kira’s actions to fight for what she cared for.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In episode 13 of Gundam SEED, Miriallia and Sai Argyle are shown sitting at their stations in the CIC of the Archangel moments before they enter the bridge to inform the Captain that they were staying on board.
  • Miriallia's job as a freelance photographer could be a reference to Kai Shiden from Mobile Suit Gundam, as he is a freelance reporter in Zeta Gundam.
  • Should Nicol (and thus Tolle) be saved in Super Robot Wars W, the romance between her and Dearka never happens, resulting in various change of dialogues.
  • While it was never mentioned in anime, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Tomo to Kimi to Koko de for Gameboy Advance reveals that Miriallia is a terrible cook. Tolle even tells Kira how he always chooses the restaurant when they go out to eat on a date.
Oh... the nightmare I was forgetting comes to mind... Anyway, I won't eat. You should be responsible for it!
