Disambiguation:

The XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell (aka Deathscythe Hell, or Gundam Zero-Two) is a redesigned version of XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell, by Hajime Katoki, featured in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers. It is piloted by Duo Maxwell.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

An upgraded version of the Gundam Deathscythe, which was destroyed following its capture by OZ. The Deathscythe Hell is better adapted for space combat and, like its predecessor, it specializes almost exclusively in stealth and close combat. The new back-mounted Active Cloak improves the suit's defense when closed, and is capable of withstanding multiple beam cannon shots from OZ's Virgo by incorporating planet defensor technology. Furthermore, the Active Cloak also allows the Deathscythe Hell to become invisible. When opened, the Active Cloak resembles bat-like wings, and greatly enhances the Gundam's mobility. One of Duo Maxwell's favorite strategies is to use the Gundam's enhanced Hyper Jammers and its invisibility to sneak close to enemy units and catch them unawares. This tactic is usually good for taking out at least one or two enemy units, after which Duo will uncloak the Gundam for psychological effect. Deathscythe Hell's primary weapon is the Beam Scissors, a large beam scythe, like its predecessor, but with increased power.

Armaments[]

  • Vulcan Gun
A pair of shell-firing armaments built into the head. Low offensive power, only used to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid fire capability.
  • Beam Scissors
The Deathscythe Hell's main weapon. This two-handed, close combat beam weapon is visually identical to the Deathscythe's Beam Scythe, but it has enhanced power.
  • Twin Beam Scissors
A version of the Beam Scissors featured in Glory of the Losers. As implied by its name, the Twin Beam Scissors has an extra beam emitter compared to the Beam Scissors. This second beam emitter is fixed above the original beam emitter and faces upwards.
  • Buster Shield
In The Glory of Losers, Deathscythe Hell can be equipped with two Buster Shields, which are of a similar design to the one used by the Deathscythe. This pair of Buster Shields are attached to the Deathscythe Hell's side skirt armor and are also known as "Hornets". These Buster Shields were launched, and subsequently lost, while escaping Libra's collapse during the conclusion of the Eve Wars.
  • Beam Saber
A close-combat weapon used by Wing Gundam Proto Zero. It was dropped by Trant Clark during his battle with Deathscythe Hell and subsequently picked up and used against him by Duo.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Active Cloak
Mounted on the back of Deathscythe Hell as a pair of large bat-like wings. They contains four field generators that function similarly to the Mercurius' planet defenders, which are used when the Active Cloak is closed. The force field generated is strong enough to block shots from Vayeate or Virgo's beam cannon, and the Active Cloak itself is also coated with an anti-beam coating. The Active Cloak also allows the Deathscythe Hell to turn invisible when closed, and can function as wings when opened, enhancing the suit's mobility.
  • Hyper Jammer
The Hyper Jammers, which are now integrated into the body, scatter jamming particles which scramble the enemy's radar and cameras. They offer double the jamming power than that of the original Deathscythe.
  • Self-Destruct System
The Deathscythe Hell was built to self-destruct should the pilot choose to. A remote detonator is placed within the cockpit and if a dire situation arrives, the pilot can destroy the Mobile Suit. The system was designed to overload its power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. It's a last option tactic if the pilot is incapable of protecting the Mobile Suit, while not allowing it to fall into enemy hands. It also can be used as one large explosive device to eradicate large targets.

History[]

After the Gundam Deathscythe was captured and destroyed by OZ's forces in AC 195, its remains were taken to OZ's lunar base and mobile suit factory for storage. The five scientists who had built the Gundams plaguing OZ were also at the lunar base, captured and forced to develop new mobile suit to secure OZ's rule over Earth and the space colonies. Despite their apparent "cooperation," the scientists also began rebuilding the Gundam Deathscythe and Shenlong Gundam in secret, preparing for the day when captured Gundam pilot Duo Maxwell and Chang Wufei could return to the battlefield.

That opportunity came when the Romefeller Foundation - the political force behind OZ - became split over a number of issues, and the "Treize Faction" of OZ attacked the lunar base, which at the time was still under the control of Romefeller loyalists. During the chaos, Duo managed to escape, taking his upgraded Gundam Deathscythe Hell to continue fighting on his own. At that time, the Deathscythe Hell was only seventy percent complete; Duo would later complete the suit on his own, bringing it up to its full combat potential. Using his new Gundam, Duo continued his fight against both the militaristic Romefeller Foundation and the radical civilian "White Fang" rebels during the Eve Wars.

During the summer of AC 196, Duo would pilot the Gundam Deathscythe Hell in a battle against Virgo IIIs on the Moon, then at the abandoned mobile doll production facility Vulkanus in a three way skirmish between Perfect Peace People forces, OZ remnants, and the Gundam pilots. In the months following the battle, Quatre Raberba Winner convinced three of his fellow Gundam pilots to destroy their Gundams by sending them into the Sun along with Vulkanus, and Duo willingly surrendered the Deathscythe Hell.

When it was discovered that the Barton Foundation was planning to carry out the original Operation Meteor, Quatre embarks on a dangerous mission to catch up to the Vulkanus and return it back to the Earth Sphere. Duo is reunited with the Deathscythe Hell and descends to Earth for battle with the Mariemaia Army in Brussels. The Deathscythe Hell disabled many Serpents, all without killing their pilots, but the battle drag on for so long that Deathscythe Hell's Beam Scissors ran out of energy. Duo contemplated activating the self-destruct system to take out as many of the remaining Serpents as he could, but was talked out of it by Trowa Barton. Just then, Heero arrives in the Wing Gundam Zero and is able to crack the fortified bunker with the Twin Buster Rifle. Dekim Barton is later killed and Mariemaia's Rebellion is ended.

In the new year that follows, the Gundam Deathscythe Hell is brought together with the Gundam Heavyarms Custom and Gundam Sandrock Custom. Their three pilots self-detonate them, destroying the Gundams once and for all in hope of a peaceful future.

Notes[]

  • When the Gundam Wing series of 1/144 and 1/100 model kits was released in America, the Deathscythe Hell EW's name lead to controversy due to the religious themes and profane nature. In most cases, the Deathscythe Hell EW model kits were not sold in Toys "R" Us stores.
  • The Gundam Fix Figuration Metal Composite version of the Deathscythe Hell EW, which was released as a Tamashii Webshop exclusive, featured exclusive weapons such as the arm shields being able to open and generate beam blades, a Buster Shield Hell (which resembled a Wing Gundam EW's shield modified with a Deathscythe Hell TV Version's buster shield at the front), and a pair of short, combinable beam scythes known as Adlers (which resembled a shortened form of the Deathscythe TV Version's beam scythe). It also has a "Grim Reaper Mode" where various armor parts slide apart to reveal vents and inner details, and an alternate flight form known as "Raven Mode", which changes into "Raven Claw" Mode when some of its beam weapons are deployed.
  • In the game Super Robot Wars 64 for Nintendo 64, Deathscythe Hell EW can be obtained simply by fully upgrading the Deathscythe Hell. However, there is no Endless Waltz storyline in the game.
  • In some Super Robot Wars games, the Deathscythe Hell EW will not be hit by missile thanks to its Hyper Jammer ECM Suite ability.
