Disambiguation:

The MS-11 Act Zaku is a Principality of Zeon mass production general-purpose mobile suit introduced in the original design series MS-X. It was later featured in the anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and the mangas Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Space, To the End of a Flash and Mobile Suit Gundam: Outer Gundam.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Developed from the MS-06 Zaku II, the MS-11 Act Zaku notably used field motors for its joints, rather than the fluid pulse system used by most Zeon mobile suits.[1][2] Its joints underwent magnet coating treatment, greatly improving its mobility.[1] Thanks to improved generator output, it was able to use beam weapons, including a custom beam rifle.[3] In addition to improved performance, its productivity was also very high, the development staff having possibly learned from the United Maintenance Plan.[1]

The Act Zaku was armed with a host of custom weapons, including a custom beam rifle, a four-barrel bullpup gun, and a custom heat hawk. Following the end of the One Year War, the Federation began mass producing the Act Zaku. The Federation-produced units were equipped with a linear seat cockpit, the BR-87A Beam Rifle used by the RMS-106 Hizack, as well as a pair of beam sabers.[1]

Armaments[]

  • Bullpup Gun
A new four-barrel machine gun developed for the Act Zaku.
  • Custom Beam Rifle
Used by the Act Zaku during the One Year War, this rifle would serve as the basis for the BR-87A beam rifle after the end of the war.
  • BR-87A Beam Rifle
The same type of beam rifle used by the Hizack and Marasai, used by Federation-captured units in U.C. 0087.
  • M-120A1 120mm Machine Gun
A standard firearm for Zaku type MS. It has a large drum magazine located at the top, and features a scope and foregrip to enable highly accurate shooting. It can switch modes between single-fire and automatic fire. Although useless against Luna Titanium Alloy, it can still destroy weaker armor material with multiple shots.
  • H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka
A portable, physical projectile-type firearm. It is primarily for anti-ship combat and displays its power in hit and run attacks. It can also be used against enemy mobile suits, but it is harder to hit a constantly moving target.
  • Giant Bazooka
The same Giant Bazooka as used by the MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II. Compared to the original Giant Bazooka, both the bazooka's shape and its shell were redesigned, greatly improving its attack power and effectiveness against ship.
  • 120mm Zaku Machine Gun Kai
The same firearm used by the Hizack, it is an improved version of the Zaku Machine Gun operated by the Principality of Zeon's Zaku type MS during the One Year War. The accuracy has been improved by changing the sensor to the one of the Federation standard.
  • Large Heat Hawk
A heat weapon for close combat. The blade is larger than that of the model used by the Zaku II.
  • Beam Saber
During the Gryps War, the Act Zaku was said to be armed with a pair of beam sabers.[1] It is unknown where they were stored.
  • Shield
To increase its defensive capabilities the Act Zaku can optionally equip the same shield as the Gelgoog, or the shield used by the Hizack.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Magnet Coating
A special membrane treatment applied to mobile suit joints. The special magnet coating materials could be electrically charged to produce a magnetic field. This field caused the components of the joints to repel one another, reducing the friction caused by joint movement to almost nothing, creating a faster and much more responsive mobile suit.

History[]

The Act Zaku was developed as part of the Pezun Project, a top secret weapons development program conducted by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War, intended to break the stalemate. To maintain secrecy, the Act Zaku was given the model number of MS-11, which was originally intended for the MS-14 Gelgoog before its development was delayed.[4]

At least one custom unit belonged to Granada's ace pilot, Mallet Sanguine. This Act Zaku has a commander antenna on its forehead and armed with two heat hawks, and a beam rifle and shield. After Mallet got seriously injured by the RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4 "G04"'s mega beam launcher, he has the Act Zaku's limiter removed - increasing its performance while ignoring his condition - in order to exact vengeance from G04's partner, RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5 "G05".

The Earth Federation would seize and use the Act Zaku for many years, right up into the Gryps Conflict, though not in as great a number as their other mass-produced machines. By that point, the Act Zaku was fairly outdated when compared to the advanced machines being produced by both sides, and saw resounding defeats during each engagement against the AEUG. In one such engagement, six Act Zakus were dispatched alongside the ORX-005 Gaplant to attack the AEUG, two of them were later shot down by the MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki and the rest eventually retreated.[5]

EiS Act Zaku beam rifle

The original design for the Act Zaku's beam rifle, as seen in Encounters in Space

The Act Zaku was said to have a beam rifle in MS-X, but the beam rifle was not given a design until the 2000 video game Gihren's Greed: Blood of Zeon. This beam rifle design was subsequently used in the 2003 video game Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space.

The manga Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Space, To the End of a Flash, an adaptation of Encounters in Space's Side Story mode that ran from 2003 to 2004, depicted a different version of the Act Zaku beam rifle, which closely resembled the beam rifle used by the Hizack and the Marasai. A slightly altered version of the second beam rifle was included in the 2005 Zeonography figure.
