Rusty Mackenzie is a character introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Personality & Character[]

Not much is revealed about him other than the fact that he thinks more like Athrun and Nicol Amalfi; meaning he questions whether what they are doing the right thing, however, it's also said that his nature is more like that of Dearka and Yzak, hence why he is also described as the "glue" that held the team together in the novelization of Gundam SEED - he is able to relate to all of the members. In the novelization, he does tease Nicol a little bit, and, in the first manga volume by DelRey, he did express views that he thought that Naturals were a bit foolish.

History[]

Rusty was born in C.E. 54, son to the later PLANT Supreme Council member Jeremy Maxwell. After his parents divorced he went to live with his mother fulltime and adopted her last name. After the start of the First Alliance-PLANT War, Rusty volunteered to join ZAFT and attendec the ZAFT Academy. Upon graduation Rusty ranked 5th and became one of the elite ZAFT pilots known as "Red Coats". He was assigned to the Le Creuset Team, along with his friends and fellow red coats: Athrun Zala, Nicol Amalfi, Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman.

On January 25, C.E. 71, Rusty was part of an infiltration team during ZAFT's attack on Heliopolis. He and Athrun broke into the Morgenröte Facility, where he intended to steal the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, but was killed by an EA soldier named Hamana before he could get near it. Immediatly afterwards, Athrun killed Hamana to avenge Rusty.[1]

In late C.E. 73, Yzak Joule, Dearka Elsman and Athrun visited Rusty's grave at the PLANT memorial site, along with Miguel Aiman's and Nicol Amalfi's, laying flowers on all three.[2]

  • In "SEED", Rusty's face wasn't shown (except in a photo on Athrun's billboard and in a group photo after their graduation from the military academy) and had no lines, hence viewers didn't get a glimpse of his character until Special Edition was released.
