Gundam Breaker Mobile (ガンダムブレイカーモバイル Gandamu Bureikā Mobairu?) was a mobile game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game launched on July 30, 2019 and updated weekly. It was initially released in Western markets with the title Gundam Battle: Gunpla Warfare, but the name was standardized for the second anniversary to better coordinate with the debut of Gundam Breaker Battlogue.

On April 5, 2023 it was announced that the game would end its service worldwide at 10 AM (JST) on June 5, 2023 about two months shy of its fourth anniversary.

Gameplay[]

Like other entries in the Gundam Breaker franchise, Breaker Mobile revolves around collecting and equipping parts of Gunpla to create, paint and pilot your own kit-bashed Gunpla to take on the game world. It differs from other Breaker games in that, instead of farming missions for most parts, it functions around a gacha component where players spend Haro Coins – a premium currency, which can be bought or slowly accrued through playing the game – to roll for many desirable parts. Players use the various pieces of the units they obtain to create their own personal machines to battle.

A Gunpla is comprised of eight pieces: a head, torso, arms, legs, backpack, shield, melee weapon and ranged weapon. Some units have certain parts integrated into them, such as arms with built-in shields, that will take up two slots. Every Gunpla part will have one of three attributes – Power, Technique or Speed – and having five parts of the same attribute equipped will grant your Gunpla that attribute. Attributes function in a Rock, Paper, Scissors-style gaining bonus damage and damage reduction when in a favorable match-up, but increased damage taken and lower damage dealt against the unfavorable match-up. All parts also have two word tags, such as 'high mobility, 'long range', or 'mobile fighter' and equipping five parts with the same word tags will give bonuses to the Gunpla's stats. All parts also have either a Trait, which provides passive bonuses if the requirements are met, or an EX Skill. EX Skills are abilities with cooldowns that are usable in combat which can range from built-in weaponry and attacks, buffs, debuffs, or healing. A Gunpla can only equip three EX skills at a time. Some parts have special EX Skills that allow them to perform famous attacks from their source series, such as the Gundam beam rifle being able to perform the "Final Shooting." These attacks are generally extremely powerful, but have long cooldowns. Collecting all of the body pieces of a kit allows players to use that unit's paint scheme, unit eye glow colors and decals on their Gunpla, as well as unlock the box art which can be displayed in their room or used as backdrops for photos. Players can also collect iconic characters to use as AI pilots for their machines. These AI pilots can have various jobs and can change how a unit performs, especially when on auto-battle, such as infighters which have a melee-focus, while long-shooters stay back and attempt to shoot from afar.

There are four base tiers of units. Each rarity tier has higher stat growth and a higher level cap so, the more the part is tuned up, the more powerful it can become. One-star units (signified with a white icon) are usually confined to grunt units. Two-star units (signified with a green icon) focus on higher end grunt units. Three-star units (signified with a blue icon) are iconic grunt suits and even popular Gundam variants. Four-star units (signified with a purple icon) are high-end units, both Gundam-types and legendary villain machines. All of these base parts can be tuned up even further, to Five-stars (signified with a gold icon), more powerful Six-stars (with and orange-red icon), and ultimately Seven-stars (which have a rainbow icon).

In gameplay, players move around the battlefield by dragging their finger across the screen. Double swipes allow for dodging boosts while a double swipe and hold allows for dashing. Players who do not want to fiddle with that can choose to set an auto movement option. Units melee attack automatically when in close range. Pressing the shoot button in the bottom right corner will cause your Gunpla to perform a ranged attack. Ranged attacks have ammo, and after you run out of ammo it will take some time to reload. Opposite the shot icon will be the guard button, which will allow you to defend with your shield to reduce incoming damage. Some pilot jobs do not have a block button, however, replacing it with a charge button which allows them to gather energy to speed up the rate at which they get their Job EX ability to activate. When activated, a Job EX will give noticeable buffs to a Gunpla, and allow them to perform their role even better. On the bottom are the three options for EX skills, which can be used by the player when the cooldowns are up. Centered on the player's Gunpla in the center of the screen are gauges for HP, ammo, and boost. If the player runs out of HP they are destroyed and fail the mission, but they may buy a respawn on most missions at a cost of 50 Haro Coins, but since this is a premium currency it was not advised to do so.

The game has numerous modes to play. Training mode allows players to learn or refresh themselves with the game's controls. Story mode has players taking the role of the Protagonist and his rise to fame. Event mode allows players to obtain special limited-availability three-star units by playing a new mission each week and earning drops, the quantity of which can be increased by playing the mission with other units from the same series to increase the quantity you get. Free missions are special, simple missions that players can play to farm some part and gear drops. Daily missions allow players to obtain special nippers or capital to increase a part's level. Multi-missions are multi-player events that up to four players can play together, and offer greater rewards to players in the same Crew. Players can create and band together in Crews, which provide additional weekly rewards for playing the game, especially for playing the game's multi-missions together cooperatively. Up to fifteen players can join one crew, and all crews are ranked weekly by the number of crew points they obtain, with greater rewards for higher scoring crews. There is also the Arena, where players can battle the AI-controlled Gunpla of other players in "asynchronous tournaments" in either 1v1 or 3v3 format for great rewards. As a challenge to long-time players, the Battle Circuit was established following the framework of a previous series of Inferno-difficulty missions. The Battle Circuit is a three-week challenge where players must complete "laps" by beating a mission that gets progressively more difficult each time, and they may only use their parts a limited number of times to make the most of their entire inventory of parts to finish all 20 laps as quickly as possible. A Mission Creator feature was also added that allowed players to create and share their own custom missions for other players to play.

Gunpla List[]

Most playable Gunpla in the game are approximately 1/144th scale, with 1/100th scale Gunpla mainly appearing during missions as bosses and mid-bosses. But during the year-and-a-half anniversary players gained the ability to alter certain Gunpla parts of their own to 1/100th scale. Mobile Armors and 1/60th Gunpla are exclusively bosses, often for multi-player Multi-Missions.

AI pilots each have a job license set to them. You can set job licenses to Gunplas on the Build screen, each of which raise a certain parameter or activates some kind of effect in battle. The raised parameter or in-battle effect varies for each job license.

Any job besides All-Rounder adds a Job Gauge. Tapping the gauge when it reaches 100% activates a Limit Burst, the effect of which differs for each job license. There are 7 types of job license: All-Rounder, Defender, In-Fighter, Out-Fighter, Middle Shooter, Long Shooter and Supporter.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Western release of a mobile game for the Gundam franchise.

  • Gundam Breaker Mobile was periodically promoted by Japanese online personalities Gor☆geous and Nao Takami, who would produce videos of themselves playing the game, customizing Gunpla, creating missions for players and battling them in friend battles. In July, 2021 their personas would be added to the game as original AI pilots, Gomuro Ray (ゴムロ・レイ?) and Naosuke (なおすけ?), which could be obtained by friend battling them during the event period. The duo were featured as the final bosses of the game's ultimate Newtype-difficulty Event mission, "A Challenge from Gor☆geous," released in March, 2022.
  • There were multiple Gunpla and parts that appeared in the game's opening animation which ultimately never appeared in the actual game, such as the Elf Bullock, Geirail Scharfrichter, the 320mm Bazooka arms for the Graze, a Char custom Petit-Bear'gguy and gold customized Zock piloted by a Petit-Bear'gguy, and a giant beige mixed build mobile armor built from the Psyco Gundam Mk-II's head, Quin Mantha arms, and Psyco Gundam torso, back and legs.
  • Prior to the game's end of service on 2023, the end dates for "Challenge from Ono" is shown to be 2029, which is the 50th anniversary of the Gundam franchise.
