The XM-05B Berga Balus appeared in the manga series Mobile Suit Gundam Silhouette Formula 91 in UC 0123 and was designed by Kunio Okawara.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

Designed and constructed by Buch Concern, the Berga Balus was to be the final production model of the Berga line of mobile suits, and was a high-performance, commander variant of the standard XM-05 Berga Giros. The Berga Balus featured varying degrees of improvement, mainly attributed to improved generator output, additional apogee motors and the "wide wing type" shelf nozzles on its backpack, giving it high performance and mobility than the Berga Giros.

Armaments

• Beam Shield

By generating a plane of energy similar to the blade of a beam saber, the beam shield can block both beam and projectile weapons. This plane is divided into multiple sections, which can be turned on or off as needed to conserve energy. Individual sections are also automatically deactivated whenever they're in danger of coming into contact with the mobile suit itself. A beam shield is mounted on the left forearm.

• Beam Saber

The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit's hands when operated and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. The beam saber emits a blade-shaped beam and can cut through any armor not treated with anti-beam coating.

• Shot Lancer

A distinctive close combat weapon utilized by the Crossbone Vanguard's mobile suits, the Shot Lancer is designed for combat in and around space colonies, where beam weapons would run the risk of triggering catastrophic reactor explosions in enemy mobile suits. Instead, the shot lancer uses electromagnetic acceleration to drive its tip through the enemy's armor, and the spearhead itself can also be launched like a missile. The Berga Balus's shot lancer can be mounted on the right arm, leaving the hand free to operate another weapon.

• Heavy Machine Gun

To increase the shot lancer's combat effectiveness, the weapon mounts a pair of heavy machine guns.

Special Equipment & Features

• "Wide Wing" Shelf Nozzle

On both sides of the Berga Balus's backpack are set of wing-like shelf nozzles. These nozzles each function as a type of propellant tank - a disposable storage unit for extra fuel with built-in vernier thrusters, albeit much smaller those used previously on mobile suits and can adjust their angle. Because of their verniers and flexibility they are highly effective tools for increasing fuel capacity and increasing the mobile suit's overall agility.

History

It is unknown how many units were produced, but at least one Berga Balus is known to exist, operated by the Crossbone Vanguard's Dark Tiger force in Side 3's Zebra Zone in early U.C. 0123.
