The Battle near Junius Seven is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Prelude[]
After escaping from the Eurasian Federation base Artemis, the Archangel found itself low on supplies. After discussing their options, it was decided to scavenge the nearby Debris Belt. The ship was able to acquire its much-needed supplies from the wreckage of the PLANT colony Junius Seven, despite protests from some of the crew about desecrating the site. During the salvage, Kira Yamato came across a GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type searching the wreckage of the civilian ship, Silverwind. When the GINN began attacking one of the Archangel’s Mistral mobile armors, Kira was forced to destroy it. Afterward, Kira found a Life Pod near the wrecked ship and brought it back to the Archangel. Once opened, it was revealed to be holding Lacus Clyne, daughter of PLANT Supreme Chairman Siegel Clyne.[1]
After leaving Junius Seven and the Debris Belt, the Archangel received a message from the Nelson-class battleship, the Montgomery, of the EA’s 8th Space Fleet, and was ordered to meet with the 8th fleet’s advanced force, which was also carrying Atlantic Federation Vice-Minister, George Allster. However, ZAFT Commander Rau Le Creuset anticipated the rendezvous and prepared for a preventive strike on the advanced force.[2]
The Battle[]
Attack on the 8th Fleet Reinforcements[]
Once within range, the Nazca-class destroyer Vesalius deployed three ZGMF-1017 GINNs and the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. In response, the Montgomery and its Drake-class escort ships, the Bernard and Law deployed their TS-MA2 Moebius mobile armors, twelve in total, to intercept the enemy mobile suits. Despite this, Captain Koopman, captain of the Montgomery believed the battle to be unwinnable and ordered the Archangel to leave the area. However, Lieutenant Murrue Ramius instead ordered the Archangel to enter the battle and support the EA vessels. The Moebius mobile armors faired poorly against the GINNs and Aegis, with their destruction leaving gaps open for the Aegis' pilot, Athrun Zala, to move in and destroy the Bernard.[3]
On the Archangel, Lieutenant Mu La Flaga launched in his TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero, while Kira launched in the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Gundam. Upon entering the battlezone the Archangel fired its Valiant Linear Cannons and managed to destroy one of the GINNs. Despite this, Koopman was livid, believing that their efforts were in vain. As the Vesalius made its way closer to the Montgomery, the Aegis Gundam fired its Multi-phase Energy Cannon, causing significant damage to the Law. Afterward, Kira and Athrun went head-to-head with each other, while Mu engaged one of the remaining GINNs. Despite severely damaging it, one of the other GINNs was able to get in close and fire a shot from its Recoilless Rifle, severely damaging the Moebius Zero and forcing Mu to retreat. By this point, the Vesalius had entered into range and began firing missiles at the Law, successfully destroying the vessel. With its escort ships gone and Moebius units down to one, the two remaining GINNs turned their attention to the Montgomery.[3]
After the final Moebius was destroyed, the Vesalius began firing its beam cannons at the Montgomery, while the GINNS destroyed its main guns. Onboard the Montgomery, Captain Koopman ordered Vice-Minister Allster to board a Launch and escape. On board the Archangel, George Allster’s daughter Flay brought Lacus to the bridge and told the crew to inform the ZAFT forces that if they didn’t stop the attack on her father’s ship, she would kill Lacus. Immediately after, the Vesalius scored a direct hit on the Montgomery with its beam cannons, destroying the ship and everyone on board, including George Allster.[3]
Hostage Crisis, Unauthorized Release and Ceasefire[]
As the remaining ZAFT forces began making their way for the Archangel, Ensign Natarle Badgiruel transmitted a message to the Vesalius, informing them that they had Lacus in their possession, and threatened that if the attack didn’t cease, they would “take care of the situation” as they saw fit. After receiving the message, Commander Le Creuset ordered his forces to stand down.[3]
However, Kira was indignant about using Lacus essentially as a human shield, especially after finding out she was the fiancé of his close friend Athrun. In the middle of the night, Kira snuck Lacus out of her room and took her to get a space suit. Once suited up, Kira, with the help of his friends Sai Argyle and Miriallia Haw, was able to quickly get himself and Lacus to the Strike Gundam, equip the Aile Striker Pack and exited the Archangel before getting caught.[4]
Once en route to the Vesalius, Kira transmitted a message, saying that if the ship halted its chase, he would return Lacus to them, but only to the pilot of the Aegis Gundam. Seeking to take advantage of the situation, Commander Le Creuset had Athrun rendezvous with the Aile Strike Gundam to retrieve Lacus but also ordered his ZGMF-515 CGUE to be prepared. Once the two mobile suits met and Athrun confirmed that it was really Lacus, she was brought over to the Aegis Gundam. After receiving Lacus, Athrun tried to convince Kira to abandon the Earth Alliance and join ZAFT. However, Kira refused, admitting that his friends were aboard the Archangel and that he needed to protect them. Having reached an impasse, the two friends promised to defeat each other the next time they fought, and Kira left to return to the Archangel.[4]
Immediately after, Commander Rau Le Creuset launched in his CGUE and ordered the Vesalius to engage the Archangel. Knowing that the situation would come to this, Lieutenant Mu La Flaga launched in his Moebius Zero to engage Rau’s CGUE. However, before the battle could resume, Lacus used the Aegis’ comm to speak with Le Creuset, using her diplomatic status to order him to stop his attack. Rau was forced to comply and returned with the Aegis to the Vesalius, allowing the Archangel to escape.[4]
Aftermath[]
Due to Kira’s unauthorized actions, he was judged by the Archangel’s officers to be in violation of military law and would have been sentenced to execution. However, because he was a civilian and not a military personnel, the officers had no jurisdiction to carry it out and let him off with a warning not to go against their orders again.[5]
Lacus remained on the Vesalius until a Launch shuttle arrived to take her back to PLANT,[6] resulting in the Vesalius being unable to join the Gamow in attacking the Archangel during the Skirmish towards Earth.[5]
