The FF-X7 Core Fighter is a fighter aircraft introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The Core Fighter was developed by Hervic Company for the mobile suits from the Earth Federation's Operation V. It was originally developed as a cockpit capsule that also served as an escape mechanism, but after research staff were moved from the aircraft department to the independent development department, it became a multi-purpose fighter. Its basic design was derived from the FF-6 TIN Cod, which was developed directly before it. The Core Fighter used a hybrid propulsion system of thermonuclear rocket thrusters and jets, allowing it to operate effectively in the atmosphere as well as in space. While it wasn't designed expressly for combat, the Core Fighter was armed with 25mm Vulcan guns and missile launchers for defending itself against enemy aircraft.

The Core Fighter could transform into a configuration named the Core Block, which served as the core and cockpit of the RX-75-4 Guntank, RX-77-2 Guncannon, and RX-78-2 Gundam, along with their variants. However, this transformation mechanism resulted in the Core Fighter having limited ammunition and fuel. Mobile suits that utilized the Core Block System were composed of two modules, with the first being the upper torso and head, and the second being the waist and legs. When the mobile suit is deployed, the Core Block would fit between the two parts, joining them together while housed inside mobile suit's torso for protection. The generator of the Core Fighter was also used by the mobile suit, but its propulsion system was unusable and became dead weight. For use in a mobile suit, the Core Fighter was equipped with a built-in learning computer and multifunctional display.

The Core Fighter's cockpit featured a drum design that used a dual structure for piloting both the Core Fighter itself and the mobile suit. However, there was a different set of controls for each. During an emergency, the Core Fighter could disconnect from the mobile suit's parts and function as an escape device. This was done to improve pilot survivability and so that combat data could be recovered from the computer in the event that the mobile suit was damaged. Due to the Core Fighter's success, Hervic Company developed the FF-X7-Bst Core Booster to improve its combat ability, as well as the G-Fighter, which utilized the Core Block System to combine its own parts with parts of the RX-78-2 Gundam. Later versions of the Core Fighter concept would be used in mobile suits long after the One Year War.

Armaments[]

  • 25mm Vulcan Gun
Two pairs of vulcan guns were mounted in the nose of the Core Fighter. While essentially ineffective against mobile suit armor, they were useful for combat against other aircraft, intercepting incoming missiles/rockets, destroying mobile suit sensors, and attacking lightly-armored vehicles.
  • 4-Shot Anti-Ship Missile Launcher
An anti-ship missile launcher was mounted on each side of the Core Fighter's main body. They had an open-hatched design and rise out of the recess when in use. Each launcher was initially equipped with only a single air-to-air missile, but was later upgraded (presumably at the Belfast base) with four missiles each.
  • AIM-79 Air-to-Air Missile
The two missile launchers were loaded with AIM-79 air-to-air missiles, which were used for bombardment or attacking heavily armored enemies that the vulcans were incapable of damaging.
  • AIM-77D Air-to-Air Missile
An AIM-77D air-to-air missile could optionally be mounted on each wing via pylons, improving the Core Fighter's air-to-air combat capabilities.

Special Equipment & Features[]

History[]

The FF-X7 Core Fighter was developed as part of the Earth Federation's Operation V as a mobile suit cockpit and emergency escape craft to increase pilot survivability and to safeguard data acquired by the Earth Federation's original nine combat ready mobile suit, of which only three participated in the war. The Core Fighter could also be used to aid mobile suits in battle in both space and in the atmosphere, or as an independent combat machine. During Operation Odessa, at least two Core Fighters were used as air superiority fighters and were seen shooting down a Gaw. It was also capable of fighting against the Dopps and Magella Attack Tanks.

The Earth Federation ship White Base also fielded a number of these Core Fighters, but because it was too complicated and costly, it was only produced in limited numbers and not incorporated in mass production mobile suits. As a result, it had a limited impacted during the One Year War. Despite not being mass-produced, the design inspired new fighter craft such as the Jet Core Booster. After the war, the FF-X7 Core Fighter served as the basis for the new Core Fighters of more advanced Gundams.
