The Saberfish was deployed by the Earth Federation Space Force for combat in outer space. With the landing gear retracted, it stood 6.9m tall, but with the landing gear extended, it reached a height of 7.1m. The Saberfish could be modified to fly at high altitudes in the atmosphere so as well as being a space fighter, it was also an air-to-air fighter. The Saberfish specialized in attacking by firing large numbers of missiles.[2]
Armaments[]
Vulcan
Eight Vulcans are built into the nose of the aircraft, with three on each side and two below. These weapons have limited effectiveness against enemy ships or fighters, though they lack the necessary power to damage mobile suits. [2]
Detachable Container-Type Missile Launcher
On each of the space fighter's fuselage, these were mounted at four points on the top and bottom. Each launcher carried three missiles, capable of dealing heavy damage to mobile suits and cruisers. However, the presence of Minovsky Particle interference left their use limited beyond line-of-sight targeting. [2]
Special Equipment & Features[]
Rocket Boosters
When the Saberfish needs to switch from atmospheric flight to space flight, these provide nimble maneuvering allowing it to provide anti-air protection for spaceships.[2]
History[]
Von Braun[]
FF-3F Saberfish space fighters were present during the capture of Von Braun by Maj. Gen. Kycilia Zabi's mobile suit assault force on January 3. As another fighter flew past, one in particular engaged MS-05S Char's Zaku I with its many missiles. Char quickly dealt heavy damage to its port side and then it exploded.[4]
Battle of Loum[]
FF-3F Saberfish space fighters also saw action at the Battle of Loum on January 15, launched by Federation carriers to counterattack the enemy fleet: although they were rendered ineffective against the brand new mobile suits in terms of maneuverability and attack power.[1]
