The FD-03-13 Gustav Karl Type-13 (FD-03-13 グスタフ・カール１３型, FD-03-13 Gustav Karl Type-13^?) , sometimes simply known as the FD-03 Gustav Karl (FD-03 グスタフ・カール, FD-03 Gustav Karl^?) , is a mobile suit appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn , and Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative .

Technology & Combat Characteristics

It was an MS developed to be a direct descendant to the RGM series, the Earth Federation Forces' main force mass-produced Mobile Suit. The Gustav Karl was developed through a different production line from the RGM-96X Jesta which was developed and deployed around the same time as accompanying unit for the UC Project. Its development resulted in the creation of enlarging and applying heavy armor to an MS without hindering its versatility. Large output generators were installed to counteract the Mobile Suit's weight, and a large number of thrusters and posture control verniers were placed throughout their bodies to maintain their mobility and maneuverability. They were armed with standard armaments seen in Earth Federation Forces Mobile Suits such as Beam Rifle, Beam Sabers, and shield, and were mostly rid of fixed arms to obtain high operability. This design allowed the Gustav Karl to have higher capability than the RGM-89 Jegan and was deployed ahead of time in U.C. 0096. Lightly armored Gustav Karl unit is also said to exist ^{p. 1}.

The head was equipped with a communication antenna on the right side. As an evolution of the Jegan, the sensor part probably consisted of a mono-eye and a cover, but the design made it look twin-eyed like a Gundam at first glance. The intakes are also similar to that of a Gundam type ^{p. 44}.

Armaments

Beam Rifle

The same type of Beam Rifile used by the RGM-89D Jegan Type-D. This was equipped with a composite sensor on the top and adopted a vertically attached energy pack. The Gustav Karl deployed at Cheyenne Base was equipped with this armament ^{p. 1}.

Beam Saber

The sabers were stored in the saber racks on the side of the hips. When in use, the saber racks opened, the saber grips were held and beam blades were generated ^{p. 1}.

Grenade Launcher

A grenade launcher equipped on the left forearm. Unlike those on the RGM-89, which were on the hips, this allowed for a wide range of fire ^{p. 1}.

Shield

The shield was not held with the hands but was instead mounted on an arm connected to the backpack. It could articulate on its own, giving a high degree of freedom for defense ^{p. 1}. When not in use, it faced backward so as to not interfere with the thrusters or grenades firing, but it can be deployed forwards by means of the joint ^{p. 44}.

Vulcans

Two vulcan guns were arranged in a vertical row on the left side of the head ^{p. 44}.

History

Laplace Incident

In U.C. 0096, two early deployment units were deployed to the Earth Federation Air Force's Cheyenne Base under the pretext of operational testing ^{p. 1}. On May 4th, at around 00:30 UTC, the Cheyenne Base was attacked by the Ra Cailum's Tri-Star Team. One Gustav Karl was caught off guard and easily disabled by a RGM-96X Jesta from the Tri-Star Team ^{p. 8}.

According to one account, the Gustav Karl was formally adopted in U.C. 0097 ^{p. 1}. In the same year, one Gustav Karl was deployed alongside two RAS-96 Anksha and three RGM-89D-ESC Jegan Type D Escort Types as part of a Federation convoy escorting Martha Vist Carbine. In the Colorado mountain region, the convoy was attacked by several MSK-008 Dijehs from Luio & Co., and the Gustav Karl was destroyed in the ensuing battle .

Notes & Trivia

• This adapts the FD-03 Gustav Karl from the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash novel . This was given the same name in sources up until the release of the Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway movie, which adapted it a second time as the FD-03-00 Gustav Karl Type-00. When Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Mechanic & World was published, this earlier variant was re-designated as the "Type-13" with a "FD-03-13" model number, distinguishing it from the "Type-00" .
