FAITH (Fast Acting Integrate Tactical Headquarters) is a faction of ZAFT introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview[]
FAITH is ZAFT's special forces corps, composed of elite personnel recognized by the National Defense Committee and the PLANT Supreme Council as having distinguished combat records and excellent personal qualities.[1] Members of the unit are appointed by the Defense Committee and placed under the direct command of the PLANT Supreme Council Chairman. Instead of operating as a single unit, FAITH members are assigned across various teams with the primary objective of carrying out top secret and important operations assigned by the ZAFT leadership that could not be communicated to ordinary troops.
FAITH members operate outside the regular ZAFT command structure and posses an higher degree of authority than that of general unit commanders. This includes being able to plan and execute operations at the field level, and give orders on the battlefield as they saw fit. Members of FAITH who piloted Mobile Suits also had the right to be given preferential access to high-performance machines.[2]
FAITH members wear badges resembling a white wing in the shape of an "F" emerging from a golden elliptical orb. There were two types of emblems, one for ZAFT Uniforms and one for pilot suits. As ZAFT lacked an official rank system, these badges served to convey a member's status to ordinary soldiers.
History[]
FAITH had been active as early as C.E. 71 with Ray Yuki being a member of the organization, who served as an aid to PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Patrick Zala.[3][4] After defeating the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, Athrun Zala was assigned to the special forces, and given the experimental nuclear-powered ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam. Athrun's first mission was to locate the stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and either recover or destroy it before it could fall into the hands of the Earth Alliance.[5][6] Athrun eventually abandoned ZAFT and allied with the Freedom's pilot Kira Yamato during the Battle of Orb.[7]
In C.E. 73, the organization became more widely known as Gilbert Durandal appointed several ace pilots to act as his liaisons within ZAFT. During the opening days of the Second Alliance-PLANT War he assigned Heine Westenfluss, Talia Gladys and the re-enlisted Athrun Zala as FAITH members, all of whom were assigned to the Minerva Corps.[8][9][10] As the war continued Chairman Durandal used the organization to further his own agenda, and took a personal hand in having the Minerva participate in several of the war's most notable battles.[11][12][13] When Athrun defected,[14] both Shinn Asuka and Rey Za Burrel were promoted to FAITH status, the latter using it to further indoctrinate the former into Durandal's circle and prevent Lunamaria Hawke from interferring in their plans.[15]
