The F90W Gundam F90 Warbird Type (aka Gundam F90 W-Type) is a variant of the F90 Gundam F90 featured in the F90 A to Z PROJECT.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The F90W Gundam F90 W-Type is a version of the Gundam F90 equipped with the W-Type Mission Pack, which enables the Gundam F90 to transform into a Flight Mode. It was constructed to test the highly experimental Trial Minovsky Drive System, which look like a pair of wings mounted to rear skirt armor. In addition, the W-Type also mounts additional modules to the backpack and shoulders, which fold forward in Flight Mode, to enclose the Gundam F90's head and make the overall airframe more aerodynamic. A beam cannon is enclosed in the nosecone giving the W-Type some combat ability in Flight Mode. When the Minovsky Drive is operating beams appear from the wings as Minovsky Particles are expelled, propelling the W-Type forward.

Although it can be operated in Mobile Suit form, the W-Type was chiefly a Mission Pack exclusively for testing the Minovsky Drive technology in Flight Form, and as such it has additional parts on the forearms and front skirt armor that function as landing gear.

Armaments[]

  • 60mm Vulcan Gun
A pair of shell-firing weapon built into the head, they can not be used while in Flight Mode because the head is enclosed in the nosecone. Though not powerful, its high rate of fire meant it was employed to intercept enemy missiles/units, as warning shots, and to destroy lightly armored targets.
  • Beam Saber
The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit's hands when deployed and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. It emits high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then fills this I-field shell with super-heated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. The F90 W-Type has two beam sabers stored in recharge racks on the modified backpack.
  • Beam Cannon
A beam cannon stored within the nosecone mounted within the backpack of the W-Type Mission Pack, it is inside of a hatch that must open to fire. It can only be fired in while the W-Type is in Flight Mode.
  • Beam Rifle
The standard Beam Rifle of the Gundam F90, it has more power than other beam rifles of the time. It uses an E-Pack system, and the E-Pack, inserted into the rear of the rifle, becomes the rifle's stock. Spare E-Packs can be carried on the side skirt armor's hardpoints, but with the rear skirt armor's weapon rack occupied by the Trial Minovsky Drive equipment, the rifle cannot be stowed on there when not in use.

History[]

Mobile Suit Gundam F90 Fastest Formula[]

There is only a few records regarding Gundam F90 Warbird Type since most of the data are either classified or lost in time, However in U.C. 0116 a prototype unit called Gundam F90 "Prototype Minovsky Drive Test Configuration" was deployed to test the durability of Minovsky Drive technology alongside the F89 Gundam F89 and RGM-89ST1 ST Gun Type 1 as escorts. Since the technology still at it's infancy the test unit was having a malfunction and instability issues, therefore in order to prevent the unit total destruction the creator of the Mission Pack Otis Arkin tells the pilot to release the excess output creating the iconic "Wings of Light" phenomenon. Luckily the pilot survived the incident but the Gundam F90 Unit 2 suffers a lot of damage, which forced the unit to be repaired for some time.[1] Later the F90 W pack was integrated to EFF 2nd Experimental Battlegroup dubbed the Fastest Formula Corps (FF) and serves as one of the crucial mission packs for the FF, and in the end it was integrated as one of the mission packs for Gundam F90 Unit 3 dubbed the Gundam F90 FF Type throughout the"Trimurti Incident".[2]

Later in U.C. 0122 the Minovsky Drive technology have been refined and the Gundam F90 W Type was assigned and deployed to Earth Federation Force's Anti EF Unit piloted by Bergh Schred in F90 Gundam F90 Unit 1. The F90 W Type itself first known deployed in combat while it tries to defend an EFF Spaceport from Oldsmobile Aerial Forces attack. During the battle the F90 W Type performed very well and more stable than its previous version, however its nearly destroyed when a RF Z'Gok suddenly appear from the sky. Luckily Bergh transformed the Gundam in an instant to MS Mode and manage destroy the RF Z'Gok with it's claw unit.[3]

After this battle it is unknown exactly what happened to the Mission Pack itself, but it's possible that SNRI done a lot of field testing to refine the technology much further, and eventually based on the developmental data led to the creation of F99 Record Breaker. This technology from F99 will define the future conflict in Universal Century.

Variant[]

  • F90 Gundam F90 (Prototype Minovsky Drive Test Configuration)
Featured in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula Vol 7. This is early version of F90 Warbird mission pack that is equipped with F90 R type arm camera, Modified H Type waist booster, D Type leg booster alongside other unknown equipment to capture field testing data. Since this is the prototype version the Minovsky Drive technology still unstable and can't endure more than 10 seconds of sustained flight, which resulting an uncontrollable thrust power that almost killed the pilot.
