The F90N Gundam F90 Next Type (aka Gundam F90 N-Type, sometimes stylized as F90 NexT Type) is a variant of the F90 Gundam F90 featured in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The F90N Gundam F90 N-Type is the combined form of the base F90 Gundam F90 with the N-Type Mission Pack, which consists of a special backpack unit called the H.U.L.LFighter. Developed in secrecy by SNRI, the Hull Fighter is a way to turn the Gundam F90, which is neither equipped nor compatible with any Psycho-Frame technology, into a Newtype-use Mobile Suit. [1]
The H.U.L.L Fighter is a manned support unit that is also capable of operating as a space fighter. With the Hull Fighter docked, the entire Mobile Suit can be operated from the cockpit of either the F90 or H.U.L.LFighter, though the intent was to have the F90 pilot operate the Mobile Suit while the Hull Fighter's Newtype pilot would concentrate on controlling the N-Type's remote weaponry. [2]
Armaments[]
- 60mm Vulcan Gun
- A pair of ballistic weapons built into the head. Though not powerful, its high rate of fire meant they could intercept enemy missiles/units, as warning shots, and to destroy lightly armored targets.
- The beam saber is a close combat weapon held in the mobile suit's hands which emits high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then fills this I-field shell with superheated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. The beam saber is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. The F90 has two beam sabers stored in recharge racks protruding above the shoulders from the backpack, they remain in the same position when equipped with the N-Type mission pack.
- Beam Rifle
- A dedicated beam rifle with a long body created for the N-Type. It doubles as the stowing mounts for the six Hilt Funnels. When not in use, the beam rifle can be mounted on the bottom of the Hull Unit nosecone shield, and it is still possible to fire it from the shield while stored there, even when separated from the Gundam F90 as the Hull Fighter.
- Hilt Funnel
- Six miniaturized funnels which are stored affixed around the barrel of the F90 N-Type's Beam Rifle. In addition to being funnels capable of all-range attacks by firing beams, it is also possible for these Hilt Funnels to form a beam blade from the tip of their beam guns, enabling them to still destroy protected targets by slipping through I-fields or around beam shields. In addition, the rear thruster can be extended to become a longer grip, and they can be hand-held and used as a beam saber.
- Machine Cannon
- A part of the Hull Fighter, they are placed above the shoulders when it's combined with the Gundam F90. This pair of machine cannons that are more powerful than the vulcan guns, and capable of damaging enemy Mobile Suits in close combat. They can also be used by the Hull Fighter when it is separated.
- Shield
- The nosecone unit of the Hull Fighter can also be equipped to the Gundam F90's arm to act as a physical shield. It is is mounted beneath of the backpack Hull Fighter when not in use.
- Beam Cannon
- A beam cannon mounted near the tip of the nosecone of the Hull Fighter. It can be used by the Hull Fighter, or by the Gundam F90 N-Type when using the nosecone as a shield.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- Hardpoint
- The Gundam F90 N-Type has ten unused hardpoints for mounting Mission Packs, sets of optional equipment and armaments, to meet specific needs or combat situations. The locations of all the F90's hardpoints are: two on top of the shoulder armor, one on the backpack, two on the sides of the forearms, two on the front skirt armor, two on the side skirt armor, and two on the sides of the legs. These hardpoints are covered when not in use. Because the F90 N-Type only utilizes the F90's backpack hardpoint to mount the Hull Fighter, some other Mission Packs can still be used. The Hull Fighter also has mounts on the bottom of its wings which can accommodate additional missiles, gun pods, electronic equipment, etc. depending on the mission.
- Weapon Rack
- The F90 has a weapon rack on its rear skirt armor for storing handheld weapons such as the Beam Rifle. The weapon rack can also be used for mounting parts of certain Mission Packs.
- 8000 Series Neurocomputer
- A fifth-generation Non-Von Neumann computer that is the main control computer of the F90. It was installed due to the need for a powerful computing system to control a high performance machine. Besides controlling the mobile suit, it can control all the Mission Packs as well. It is the first MS-based computer to have a holo-cube processing system with more than one million synaptic processors, but it cannot be programmed in the usual way, so a pseudo-personality knowledge base is configured on the processors, and it is programmed by synaptic connections through repeated simulations against an learning computer installed with data of past mobile suit battles.
- Type-C.A-III Pseudo-Personality Computer
- Installed on the F90 Unit 2, it not only assists with control of the Mission Packs, but also improves the mobile suit's mobility. This causes the Unit 2 to be three times faster than other mobile suits. Though never confirmed, it is heavily implied that its programming was based on the pseudo-personality of Char Aznable.
- Type-K.B Pseudo-Personality Computer
- Installed on Unit 3, it not only assists with control of the Mission Packs, but also improves the mobile suit's melee movements such as kick and punch. In addition, it also allows Unit 3 to equip up to 4 mission packs and can simplify their controls, enabling the pilot to operate 4 mission packs simultaneously. It also had a stricter reaction time than A.R & C.A type. It is heavily implied that its programming was based on the pseudo-personality of Kamille Bidan.
History[]
The N-Type mission pack's existence is first hinted at by Job John, as believes he sees an ideal pilot for it in Liv Angelica. In UC 0112, the Earth Federation Forces 13th Experimental Squadron's Team B test pilot Patsy Angelica was assigned to test various Mission Packs with the F90 Gundam F90 Unit 2. On their final mission, in space, the trial of the F90G Gundam F90 G-Type was attacked by a mercenary group called Gleam Black Guns. The Hull Fighter, piloted by Liv, joins the battle alongside the F90 Unit 2, which was engaged in a losing battle against two variable Tigris mobile suits, and they combine to form the Gundam F90 N-Type. However, Liv is overcome by the Psycho-Frame and loses his senses. His mother leaves her cockpit to try to help him, but she is caught in the explosion of a Tigris, and killed, and the F90 N-Type is left heavily damaged.
The Gundam F90 Unit 2 and Hull Fighter are both repaired and returned to service in UC 0115. Gideon Blondin, a former member of Team B, is assigned to lead the Federation's 2nd Special Experimental Battle Corps, nicknamed "Fastest Formula", where he is to pilot the Gundam F90 Unit 2 alongside the Hull Fighter's pilot, who goes by the name Dill Ryder, but who Gideon recognizes as Liv. They are tasked with helping the Federation mop up Neo Zeon remnants, but are tailed by Anaheim Electronics operatives in the Federation who have begun gathering data for the Silhouette Formula Project.
The N Type later attached to Gundam F90 Unit 3 following the aftermath of Frontier 1 Zeon Remnant insurrection, the mission pack itself is assigned to unit 3 because it's compatible with Dir Rider abilities as a newtype. Since the N Type attched to unit 3 the Gundam itself often used at least 2 mission packs or 4 mission packs if things got out of hand and Fastest Formula needed a quick tide turner. When Zeon Remnant cell known as "Legacy" sieged EFF Trimurti Anti Asteroid Cannon the Fastest Formula Corps (FF) was assigned to aid the local defense force to repel the Legacy which was led by Rhein Dragun. The Gundam F90-3 N Type was the spearhead of FF Corps which was equipped with NGVW Mission pack combination dubbed the FF-Type. During the battle F90-3 N Type was once again met it's nemesis the MSA-120 Draig, and they were fighting on equal terms, the battle was intence because both the F90 and Draig pilot is evenly matched until F90-3 Pilot outmaneuvered the Draig which eventually the F90 able to destroy it albeit the unit lost 3 mission packs in the process.[3]
Variants[]
Because the N-Type equipment only utilizes the F90's backpack hardpoint to mount the Hull Fighter, the arm and leg hardpoints are still free to be utilized. This means that the F90 N-Type could be used simultaneously with almost all currently developed mission packs, without needing to undergo extensive field modifications, as long as the backpack is not changed out. Despite the weight and balance issues this would normally present, the Gundam F90's OS is able to compensate so that control is better maintained.

Notes & Trivia[]
- The design of N-Type's H.U.L.L Fighter is possibly an homage to Zeta Project MS, primarily the MSA-0011 S Gundam's G Attacker form.
