The F-71 G-Cannon is a mass-produced artillery mobile suit introduced in the anime movie Mobile Suit Gundam F91.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Developed by SNRI and manufactured by Anaheim Electronics, the G-Cannon is a simplified mass production version of the SNRI's F70 Cannon Gundam. The G-Cannon inherits the ability to remove its back-mounted machine cannons and function as a close-combat mobile suit, but its overall performance is still inferior to the Cannon Gundam.

The lower performance is due to design changes caused by Anaheim Electronics using off-the-shelf components for manufacturing, differing from those of SNRI. Additionally, as it was developed during peacetime, the G-Cannon was designed for riot suppression and other small scale conflicts. This also meant considerations were made for combat within colonies, and as such it does not have high caliber weapons for MS combat.

Nevertheless, the G-Cannon outperforms the Federation's RGM-109 Heavygun, as any features not required for its artillery support role can be removed to reduce weight and increase performance. The G-Cannon can also utilize the weapons system derived from the F90 Gundam F90's mission packs, with its machine cannons being replaceable with various equipment including the VSBR, a 200mm long range cannon and beam cannons. The most complex variant is the F71 G-Cannon Powered Weapon Type.

Armaments[]

  • Vulcan Gun
A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. They have low firepower, but are ideal for restricting enemy movements and shooting down small, lightly armored targets such as missiles or attack vehicles due to their high rate of fire.
  • Quadruple Machine Cannon
The most identifying weapon of the G-Cannon is the pair of quadruple machine cannons mounted on the top of its backpack for medium range fire support. These cannons rapid fire medium caliber, high velocity, armor piercing rounds instead of beams or large caliber projectiles in consideration of combat within space colonies. Despite this, the spent shell casings ejected from the top of the cannons as they are fired can still be fatal to people who wandered too close to the mobile suit. The quadruple machine cannons are also effective in anti-air combat and can be removed for the G-Cannon to serve as a close combat unit.
  • Double Beam Gun
A small-caliber, rapid-firing, double-barreled beam weapon attached to hardpoints on the forearms, it is designed for use during close ranged combat. This weapon was equipped in consideration that the G-Cannon could be deployed for close combat once the quadruple machine cannons were removed. The pair of double beam guns can be fired together with the quadruple machine cannons for a barrage.
  • Beam Saber
The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit's hands when deployed and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. It emits high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then fills this I-field shell with superheated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. It is unclear where the G-Cannon stores its pair of beam sabers.
  • Beam Rifle
The G-Cannon can use the same firearm as the RGM-109 Heavygun. It features a full barrel structure for barrel protection and to maintain accuracy. As the weapon is developed during a time where anti-MS combat is not the main focus and usage of beam rifles are actively avoided to protect the space colonies, it is installed with a sub-sensor as well as a limiter to avoid excessive power. It also has a selector for choosing between automatic or semi-automatic firing modes.
  • Shield
The same shield used by the Heavygun, it is typically mounted on the left forearm.

History[]

In U.C. 0111, the Earth Federation Forces (EFF) adopted SNRI's Formula Project series for their next generation of mobile suits, replacing Anaheim Electronics. However, as SNRI was mainly a research institution still in the process of transitioning into production, Anaheim Electronics' services were retained by the Federation Forces for mass production. As a result, early SNRI designs were outsourced to Anaheim for production.

The F71 G-Cannon is the first mass production mobile suit of the Formula Project. SNRI intended to mass-produce the F70 Cannon Gundam, but design changes by Anaheim due to complexity of the F70 that had a lot of custom parts led to the creation and production of the G-Cannon instead. This worsened SNRI's relationship with Anaheim, as the developers of the F70 were not pleased with the G-Cannon design, and Anaheim was displeased with SNRI's unwillingness to share data and technology.[1]

The G-Cannon was rolled out in April of U.C. 0115. Initially, the G Cannons were distributed to EFF Special Forces such as the Fastest Formula Corps (FF) which assigned two units, one equipped with Quadruple Machine Cannons and another without these cannons, to Kanata Sawame and Baz Galemson respectively.[2] These initial units demonstrated good performance and Baz's unit was later customized to his specifications.[3] Baz used his customized G Cannon against Zeon remnant group "Legacy" during an insurrection at Frontier 1 and subsequently assisted the F90 Gundam F90 in battles.[4]

By the time Crossbone Vanguard (CV) invaded the Frontier Side in U.C. 0123, the G-Cannon close-combat variant, which had its cannons removed and was equipped with a shield, became EFF's primary general-use mobile suit and was slowly replacing the aging RGM-109 Heavygun. This variant was nicknamed "G-Cannon Naked" by soldiers in the field. During CV's takeover of Frontier IV, several G-Cannons and Heavyguns were deployed with other EFF mobile suits to stop the attack, often causing collateral damage as they fought in populated areas. Later, more G-Cannons were sent as part of the EFF's reinforcement fleet coming from the Moon.[5] While EFF's mobile suits appeared to perform poorly against CV's mobile suits in the early stages of the war[5], it was later estimated that the kill ratio of the G-Cannon to the CV's XM-01 Den'an Zon was 1.5 to 1 throughout the entire Cosmo Babylonia war.[6]

Variants[]

A customized G Cannon used by Baz Galemson when he was with the Fastest Formula Corps. It incorporated F Project parts and had two configurations: Close Combat and Sniper. The close combat configuration was equipped with G Cannon Powered Weapon Type's leg boosters, a pair of forearm-mounted beam spikes from Gundam F90 F-Type's arm fighting equipment, and modified versions of the Gundam F90 B-Type's beam cannons on its back. The sniper configuration closely resembled the G Cannon Powered Weapon type, but had a double beam gun on the right forearm, F90 F-Type's beam spike on the left forearm, and a Long Rifle from the Gundam F90's L-Type Mission Pack. Additionally, Baz's unit was also seen using Gundam F90 D-Type's Mega Gatling Gun and two Gundam F90 H-Type's Beam Sprayguns. With these additional parts, the performance of Baz's G Cannon is comparable to the Gundam F90, making it a valuable asset to the team. This mobile suit served as one of the main escort in the Fastest Formula Corps.
