The Eternal Chase is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Since rejoining the fray as part of the Archangel, Lacus Clyne and other crew members remained suspicious of current PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal after a Coordinator attack on their residence in Orb. Following her and Andrew Waltfeld's departure from the ship, the pair returned to the Eternal, which had been kept hidden since the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War, in an asteroid. Their investigation eventually took them to an abandoned lab in Mendel, where Durandal had previously worked as a geneticist.

There, Waltfeld's right-hand man, Martin DaCosta, discovered a theory that Durandal had previously conceived; the Destiny Plan, a radical solution to ending chaos by stripping people of their individuality and forcibly guiding them to what they were genetically designed for. Meanwhile, Lacus and the other members of the Eternal attempted to find information regarding the former ZAFT terrorists that attempted to drop Junius Seven on Earth, but found that Durandal had their data expunged.

During his voyage back from investigating Mendel, Martin's shuttle was secretly trailed by a ZGMF-LRR704B GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type, and tracked back to the Factory. Rather than risk endangering their allies in Terminal, Lacus ordered the Eternal to split off and head towards a suitable drop point to send their prototype mobile suits to the Archangel.[1]

The Battle[]

On its approach to the drop-off point, the Eternal was intercepted by three Nazca-class ships of ZAFT's Glasgow Corps. The Nazca-class vessels launched their mobile suit teams, consisting of ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warriors and ZGMF-2000 GOUF Igniteds, to destroy the Eternal. When it was within communications range, the Eternal sent a message to the Archangel in the Orb Union, informing them of their situations. After learning that Lacus was in danger, Kira Yamato ordered the MBF-02+EW454F Strike Rouge Ootori to be prepared to launch into space so he could reinforce the Eternal. (In the original, Kira had used the MBF-02+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Rouge instead, but this was changed to the Ootori in the HD Remaster)[1]

Andrew Waltfeld launched from the Eternal in the ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam, and intercepted the enemy mobile suits. Andrew succeeded in destroying and disabling several mobile suits before the Eternal was within the firing range of a Gunner ZAKU Warrior. However, before it could attack, the machine was neutralized by a shot from the Strike Rouge Ootori. Kira then proceeded to disable several more ZAKU Warriors and GOUF Igniteds, before having to sacrifice the Ootori Striker Pack to intercept the attack of another Gunner ZAKU Warrior. With the aid of Andrew, the Strike Rouge made its way to the Eternal, suffering major damage from the attacking mobile suits. Once there, Kira and Lacus reunited and Lacus gave Kira his new mobile suit; the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam.[1]

Kira launched in the Strike Freedom Gundam and re-entered the battle. He immediately intercepted and destroyed a missile barrage heading for the Eternal with the Strike Freedom’s Beam Rifles, then disabled the Blaze ZAKU Warriors that fired the missiles with his Beam Sabers and proceed to neutralize several other mobile suits. Afterwards, two GOUF Igniteds deployed their Heat Rods at the Strike Freedom, restricting an arm and leg respectively. However, Kira countered by deploying the Strike Freedom’s eight Super DRAGOONs and used their Beam Assault Cannons to neutralize the GOUFs and free himself from their heat rods. Following that, the Strike Freedom attacked the remaining mobile suits with its Full Burst Mode, disabling them entirely. Onboard the lead Nazca-class vessel, Captain Glasgow was shocked that the Strike Freedom Gundam defeated twenty-five mobile suits in only two minutes. Moments later, Kira disabled the three Nazca-class vessels, using the Super DRAGOONs to destroy the ship’s weapons and thrusters, rendering the entire ZAFT task force inoperable.[1]

Aftermath[]

With the ZAFT force neutralized, the Eternal was able to return back to its allies in the Factory with the Strike Freedom Gundam escorting it. There, Kira helped led the development of the Infinite Justice Gundam and provided specs that met the preferences of its intended pilot, Athrun Zala. When the Eternal returned to Earth's orbit it deployed the Strike Freedom Gundam, Infinite Justice Gundam, and three DOM Troopers to Orb during ZAFT's invasion.[2]
