The Des Moines-class cruiser is a sea battleship introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The Des Moines-class is a sub-class of the Danilov-class cruiser, and is closely related to the Arkansas-class; both ships have an almost identical hull and slightly different weapons. The Des Moines-class is an anti-surface combat vessel, which suggests the reason for its rapid-fire cannon on the forward deck used for low angles. The Des Moines being defined as cruiser class, it is proper to assume that rapid-fire cannon is at least 155mm caliber if the classification of main guns still follows the Washington Naval Treaty specifications.

History[]
First Alliance-PLANT War[]
The Des Moines-class served as one of the Earth Alliance's primary naval vessels, alongside the Fraser-class, Arkansas-class, and Spengler-class. During the Battle of JOSH-A, Several Des Moines-class vessels were used in the defense of JOSH-A, fending off ZAFT mobile suits.[1] Many of these ships were destroyed against ZAFT forces, by most were annihilated when the base's Cyclops System activated.[2] In June of C.E. 71 several Des Moines-Class ships were sent as part of a fleet to invade the Orb Union.[3]
Second Alliance-PLANT War[]
The Des Moines-class continued to serve the EA during the Second Alliance-PLANT War, participating in the Ambush of the Minerva, and the battles of Dardanelles, Crete and Heaven's Base.[4][5][6][7]
