Denim (デニム?) is a character featured in the TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam.
History[]
He is the commander of the platoon that invaded Side 7 with Zakus for reconnaissance of Operation V. He orders Slender to stand by and enters the space colony with Gene. They discover an incoming Earth Federation mobile suit and related parts. However, Gene is impatient with the success of the mission, and the reconnaissance mission becomes a raid in a different direction. When Amuro Ray gets into the cockpit of the RX-78-2 Gundam and critically damages Gene's Zaku, Denim orders Gene to retreat with Slender, until Amuro cleaves and destroys the retreating Zaku. Denim, enraged by the rookie's death, makes one final rush at the Gundam. Amuro, desperate not to explode the incoming Zaku's engine and fatally damage Side 7, runs the Gundam's beam saber through the cockpit of the Zaku, stopping it dead in its tracks and instantly incinerating Denim inside.[1][2]
In the novel version, his rank is that of lieutenant, and it was he, not Gene, who opened the war in the space colony with the Zaku, out of rivalry with "young monk" Char and out of a sense of honor. He was surprised by the performance of the Gundam, which destroyed Gene's Zaku in the blink of an eye, and escaped from Side 7. He took part in infiltrating Side 7 with Char while donning his normal suit. After returning to the Musai, he and Char launched in Zaku IIs to intercept the Pegasus escaping from Side 7. He left his IFF signal on in order to keep Char from targeting him, but this proved to be a fatal mistake, allowing Amuro to easily locate Denim's Zaku, and score a direct hit, destroying it. Char noted in awe and horror that the Gundam's beam rifle had the power of a cruiser's main cannon, and retreated.

Notes & Trivia[]
- The Zaku remains on display at Industrial 7 in the first episode of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is most likely Denim's. The Zaku on display has a large hole in its left side that suggests heat-based damage, which matches where and how Denim's Zaku was hit.
- Denim was never seen without his helmet, except in a cutscene in the PS2 game Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo, revealing a heavily-receding hairline.
