Delling Rembran (デリング・レンブラン Deringu Renburan?) is the overarching antagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury and its prologue. He is the president of the Benerit Group, the supervising representative of the auditing organization Cathedra, and leads a multitude of affiliate companies. He is also the father of Miorine Rembran.[2]

Personality & Character[]

An ex-military man, Delling is authoritarian, cold, and ruthless, being concerned only with victory and results. He believes that might makes right and those that hold power make the rules while the destitute have to simply remain quiet and obey. Delling has thin patience for those who fail to meet his standards, being unconcerned with companies under his banner that don't produce satisfactory results, despite the potential for improvement[6]. Delling has a strong desire to keep his authority and power secure, and he is more than willing to break the rules he himself established if it suits his interests[7][8].

Delling maintains this controlling demeanor over his own daughter Miorine, believing he knows what is best for her and often refusing to entertain her own opinions. In addition to stopping her from getting involved in projects he disapproved of[9], Delling enrolled her in Asticassia and put her future marriage up as a reward in the dueling games despite her vehement objections [7]. He is very cold to her and expects Miorine to obey his commands without justifying himself, causing an intense estrangement with her.

Despite his harsh treatment, Delling believes he is doing so for the sake of keeping her safe, and he is willing to risk his life to protect her[10]. In more private settings, he is willing to speak plainly with her about business operations and offer her more honest advice [11].

History[]

He was in the military at some point in the past.[5]

Vanadis Incident[]

A top manager in the Grassley company, he reported directly to its CEO Sarius.[4]

The Mobile Suit Development Council had imposed a deadline on the Ochs Earth Corporation. According to Yamaoka, it was Delling who insisted the council meet before the deadline. At the council's meeting on an asteroid, he saw no wrong when a council member raised their concern for overstepping the bounds of private enterprise, but his boss Sarius dismissed his opinion. He retorted that once the Vanadis Institute completed their Gundam, it would be too late, insisting that they make a decision.[5]

As Delling got ready for a press conference, he was informed that deployment of the Ulysses was complete and that they could commence any time. He ordered them to raid Fólkvangr and Ochs Earth's headquarters according to the plan. They obeyed the orders without the council's approval as Delling assumed full responsibility. An hour had passed since the meeting and council was holding its press conference where Delling's boss introduced him as supervising representative of Cathedra. By the time Kenanji Avery deployed in his CEK-040 Beguir-Beu, Delling took to the podium, denouncing the mobile suits that Vanadis and Ochs Earth manufactured while the very same mobile suits were clashing outside Fólkvangr, damaging the bodies of their pilots as he said they did. He concluded his speech with the declaration that Cathedra shall deny all Gundams.[5]

A.S. 122[]

He had since become the president of the Benerit Group and sent his daughter, Miorine to Asticassia School of Technology.[2] He initially arranged for her to marry the top ranking duelist in the school, known as the Holder, but later attempted to pull her out of the school and make other marriage arrangements.

Relationships[]

Miorine Rembran[]

The relationship between Delling and his daughter has been depicted to be 'complicated' at best. There were times he has shown to be cruel and/or indifferent towards her, such as not allowing her to attend her mother's funeral, ending her chances of practicing the piano, not caring about who was supposed to be guarding her and forcing her to accept being engaged to whoever is the 'Holder'.[2] However, when Miorine asked him to provide some funding for her company, he was willing to do so. After the establishment of GUND-ARM, Inc., he and Miorine appear to be able to speak to each other with civility as fellow CEOs rather than as father and daughter. He also protected his daughter from harm, and she likewise did what she could to protect him from the terrorist attack.

Quotes[]

So that humanity can remain in peace,

we must wield the hammer of witches.

—Delling at the council meeting, [5]

Throughout my years of experience on countless battlefields,

I've come to one conclusion: Weapons should only exist to kill people. There should be no excuses for this. Once someone holds in their hands a tool meant purely for killing, they have to bear the sin that comes with it. But the mobile suits of Vanadis and Ochs Earth are different! Not only do they take the lives of their opponents, but of their operators as well. This is not a tool. It is a curse!

The punishment for taking a life should be imposed upon us by humans, and not machines. People must kill or be killed by people. I believe that's the minimum courtesy in the foolish act of war.

When we pull the trigger ourselves we bear the burden of the life we're taking and of a sin we can never atone for. In war, or any form of murder... That's how it has to be.

And our Cathedra... shall deny all Gundams.

—Delling's speech, [5]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In line with the Nordic-themed naming conventions of the show, Delling's name may be a reference to the Norse deity Dellingr, though little is known about him by modern scholars.
