Cucuruz Doan (ククルス・ドアン Kukurusu Doan?) is the titular character of the movie Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island and its novelization.

History[]

Cucuruz Doan was born in a church orphanage. In his youth he began finding employment with Egba Atler as a mercenary in the build-up to the One Year War. He married a woman, who was born with a hearing impairment, whom he met by chance after she was almost hit by a car, and they would have a son together. In 0075 —as a reward for their rescue of a weapons scientist from a prison transport ship— Doan and Egba were offered a commission by the Autonomous Republic of Zeon to become test pilots for the new Mobile Suits being developed by Zeon, and they formed the Southern Cross Corps.

When the One Year War finally began in 0079, the Southern Cross Corps became a special forces unit and Doan gained a reputation as an ace pilot. Because the weapons scientist Doan and Egba had rescued years earlier was the one who developed GG Gas for Zeon, the Southern Cross Corps was given the honor of escorting the warships carrying GG Gas Infusion Vessels for Operation British. The Southern Cross Corps were later dropped to Earth as part of the Earth Attack Force. After the start of the war, contact with his family became more difficult, but a letter finally arrived for Doan from his wife, six months late. In the letter, Doan's wife said she was emigrating away from Side 3, and was going to Island Iffish, the colony dropped to Earth during Operation British. Doan was devastated; he now understood that his wife and son had been killed by Zeon's attack.

The next day, during one of their missions, the Southern Cross Corps fought their way through a city, resulting in many civilian deaths. From inside the cockpit of his Zaku, Doan saw a little boy crying at the corpse of an adult. His reaction was to help the boy, and he knew he could no longer support Zeon. Taking Lope with him, Doan deserted the Zeon military, causing his subordinate Egba Atler to despise him as a traitor.

Doan later found his way to Alegranza, an uninhabited island that secretly housed a Zeon nuclear silo. After killing the Zeon operative stationed on the island, and dumping their Zaku into the ocean, he built a secret home for war orphans he rescued there, including the crying boy he saw. To protect the children, Doan used his Zaku to destroy many Federation Forces search parties, causing Zeon to believe that their operative was still on Alegranza.

Even though they had no electricity and almost no contact with the outside world, Doan lived a happy and simple life with the children. They lived off of fish, goat's milk, and vegetables grown from soil enriched by volcanic ash, with Doan teaching the children how to farm. He also rigged up a pump system that drew groundwater from underneath the island. Unknown to the children, however, he continuously tried to sabotage the nuclear missile every night, trying to make sure it could never be used.

Following Zeon's failed attack on Jaburo, two of the Federation's new RGM-79 GM mobile suits arrived on Alegranza on a Gunperry to search for Doan. However, Doan easily destroyed them. The next day, the White Base's mobile suit team was ordered to continue the mission. When Amuro Ray's RX-78-02 Gundam split up with the others when he found the footprints of Doan's Zaku leading to a cliff, Doan ambushed him in the Zaku. Catching Amuro off guard, Doan almost shoved him off the cliff before his Zaku was pushed back by the Gundam. The two engaged in melee combat, with Doan holding his own despite facing a much more advanced mobile suit. During the battle, the Gundam accidentally caused the cliff to collapse. Doan's Zaku jumped away to safety, but the Gundam fell off the cliff, causing Amuro to become unconscious.

Having heard of the dreaded white Mobile Suit, Doan opened the Gundam's cockpit and prepared to kill its pilot. However, he was shocked to discover that the pilot who killed so many Zeon soldiers was only a boy. Instead of killing Amuro, Doan took him back to his house and hid the Gundam in the Zeon missile base underneath the island.
