The Cosmic Era (コズミック・イラ Kozumikku Ira?) is a fictional epoch in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series.

Hiroyuki Yoshino, a member of the setting production staff, was in charge of the events and years in the official chronology. In an interview, Yoshino said that the director, Mitsuo Fukuda, gave him the general background of the battle between genetically engineered humans and old humans, and that he worked out the background of the battle between the two.

Chronology

Near the end of Anno Domini
  • As petroleum resources run out and environmental pollution worsens, a worldwide economic collapse ensues. The world's nations form economic blocs, dividing the planet into a handful of major powers.
  • Ethnic and religious strife leads to a global conflict known as Third World War, or Reconstruction War, while the Type S influenza virus spreads throughout the world. Disease and war produce massive casualties.[1]
-16 April 1
CE calendar
1
  • Nuclear weapons are employed on the frontlines of central Asia, in the Kashmir region (known as the "Last Nuke"). The resulting shock motivates the combatants to resolve their conflicts peacefully.[1]
4
  • George Glenn is nominated for a Nobel Prize.[1]
5
  • George Glenn enlists in the navy.[1]
9
  • The Reconstruction War ends. The previous national order has been radically changed, and none of the previous nation-states remain. New powers in the form of the Atlantic Federation (composed of former United States, United Kingdom, and Canada), Eurasian Federation (composed of the member states of the European Union), Republic of East Asia (composed of China, Japan, and Korea), and other superstates emerge.
  • The United Nations formally adopts the Cosmic Era calendar, with C.E. 1 being the year of the Last Nuke, and announces a new space development program. Construction of the fourth generation International Space Station Yggdrasil, which had been interrupted by the global war, resumes at Lagrange Point 1.[1]
10
  • The Space Colony plan begins in earnest, and a space industry arises to exploit the new frontier. Construction of the lunar supply and assembly base Copernicus begins.
  • George Glenn becomes an employee of the Atlantic Federation's Federal Aeronautics and Space Administration (FASA).
  • The Atlantic Federation establishes the Federal Space Force (FSF). The Eurasian Federation and Republic of East Asia soon follow suit.[1]
11
  • Yggdrasil is completed.[1]
12
  • The lunar city of Copernicus is completed.
  • FASA launches a Jupiter exploration project and announces the development of the exploration ship Tsiolkovsky. George Glenn is to be the ship's chief designer, and the space station Yggdrasil will serve as the construction site.[1]
15
  • The exploration ship Tsiolkovsky is completed.
  • The ship is equipped with exoskeletal power-assisted space suits known as mobile suits. These would eventually inspire the massive humanoid weapons of the same name.
  • George Glenn's Confession. As George Glenn departs for Jupiter aboard the Tsiolkovsky, he reveals the existence of Coordinators, and releases the necessary genetic engineering techniques onto the worldwide network.
  • The world is thrown into chaos, with religious authorities declaring the Coordinator technology heretical due to infringing upon God's domain, threatening excommunication for anyone who even browses the data.
  • In the name of environmental protection, the pressure group Blue Cosmos declares itself adamantly opposed to Coordinator technology. Its greatest backer was the Azrael Foundation from the Atlantic Federation.[1]
16
  • The UN Genetic Resources Development Conference is held in Italy to discuss the Coordinator issue. The Agreement on Human Genetic Modification is adopted, totally prohibiting the manipulation of human genes. What to do with George Glenn himself is to be decided after he returns from Jupiter.
  • Nonetheless, some wealthy individuals secretly have their children turned into Coordinators.[1]
17
  • A hospital in Chicago which had secretly been creating Coordinators is set ablaze, its doctors, nurses and patients are all slaughtered. Blue Cosmos is rumored to be involved.
  • The Atlantic Federation and the United States of South America begin construction of the Porta Panama mass driver in Central America.[1]
21
  • The Eurasian Federation and the South African Union begin construction of the Habilis mass driver on the shore of Lake Victoria.[1]
22
  • The Tsiolkovsky reaches Jupiter and discovers the fossil known as Evidence 01. The world is again thrown into chaos, and FASA orders the Tsiolkovsky to bring back the fossil.
  • Siegel Clyne, a Coordinator, is secretly born in the Kingdom of Scandinavia.[1]
23
  • Patrick Zala, a Coordinator, is secretly born in the Atlantic Federation.[1]
29
  • George Glenn returns from Jupiter with Evidence 01. The fossil is taken to the Zodiac research colony at Lagrange point 5 for detailed examination.
  • The investigation committee declares that there is absolutely no possibility that the fossil is fake, and that the creature likely possessed intelligence greater than or equal to a whale, throwing the religious community into chaos.[1]
30
  • The world's religious authorities gather at the Palestine Conference, but are unable to reach any conclusions, and their influence begins to wane. Tolerance for Coordinators spreads throughout the world, and the first Coordinator boom begins.
  • The space industry heats up, and the construction of numerous space colonies begins at Lagrange point 4, including the colony Mendel.
  • The Orb Union begins construction of the Kaguya mass driver and the resource satellite Heliopolis.[1]
31
  • The restrictions on George Glenn are lifted, and he begins examining Evidence 01 at Zodiac.
  • The colony's extraterrestrial research organization expands into one of the largest research facilities in space.[1]
35
  • The Atlantic Federation establishes a lunar base in the Ptolemaeus Crater, drawing international condemnation. The Atlantic Federation pushes back, saying that it is a "police office in space", and unveils its first series of mobile armors. Earth's major powers begin a space arms race, and the Eurasian Federation begins the construction of Artemis.[1]
38
  • The Zodiac research colony is further expanded and similar colonies are constructed. George Glenn announces his concept for a new scale-shaped space colony, and construction of these new colonies begins. This project is funded mainly by the Atlantic Federation, the Eurasian Federation, and the Republic of East Asia, and the new L5 colony cluster is to be managed by representatives of these sponsor nations.[1]
40
  • The first generation of Coordinators, born in secrecy, reach maturity and begin to excel in every scientific, artistic, and athletic field. The differences between Coordinators and Naturals thus become very clear, and critical voices emerge.
  • Catholic zealots, Islamic fundamentalists, and armed genetic discrimination groups (thought to be offshoots of Blue Cosmos) secretly unite.[1]
41
  • Marriages among first-generation Coordinators produce a purebred second generation, who soon prove to have inherited their parents' abilities, starting further controversy.
  • Muruta Azrael is born in the Atlantic Federation.[1]
43
  • Patrick Zala and Siegel Clyne, participating in the construction of new model colonies at Lagrange point 5, meet for the first time.[1]
44
  • The first ten space colonies (later known as Aprilius City) of the new L5 cluster are completed. These colonies are collectively known as PLANT, since they were intended to serve as large-scale production sites.[1]
45
  • The estimated Coordinator population now exceeds ten million.
  • Investment in PLANT continues as the colony cluster continues to grow, though it became apparent that only Coordinators can work effectively there. By this point, it is said that "there is nothing that PLANT cannot make". The only exception being food, which it is severely prohibited from producing. PLANT's food supply almost completely relies on import.
  • Anti-Coordinator organizations begin carrying out acts of terrorism against PLANT. Since they have no political autonomy and are thoroughly demilitarized, the PLANTs are unable to defend themselves, and the Coordinators working in the PLANTs become increasingly dissatisfied.[1]
46
  • Al Da Flaga visits the Mendel colony at L4. He commissions Dr. Ulen Hibiki, the chief researcher of GARM R&D, to create a clone of himself. Rau La Flaga is born later this year.[1]
50
  • Siegel Clyne and Patrick Zala found the Zodiac Alliance, a political organization dedicated to campaigning for PLANT autonomy, trading independence, self-defense rights, and the abolishment of the food production ban. This movement is suppressed by the sponsor nations and forced to move underground.[1]
53
  • George Glenn is assassinated by a young Natural who is angry because he was not born as a Coordinator. It is said that Blue Cosmos is behind this, though the truth is unknown.
  • A PLANT Supreme Council is formed, made up of representatives from each of the PLANT cities.[1]
54
  • Type S influenza mutates into a new strain known as Type S2 influenza, rendering all previous vaccines useless. The new virus spreads, killing many Naturals but no Coordinators, prompting rumors that it was created by Coordinators to avenge the death of George Glenn.
  • Dr. Hibiki turns one of his wife's zygotes into a Coordinator. [1]
55
  • Religious authorities claim that the Type S2 influenza outbreak was divine punishment, turning public opinion against genetic modification once again. The Agreement on the Prohibition of Genetic Modification, commonly known as Turin Protocol, was signed, banning genetic modification "on Earth". Anti-Coordinator sentiments at an all-time high.[1]
55, February 5
55, May 18
  • Kira Hibiki and Cagalli Hibiki are born on Mendel. However, as death toll caused by S2 influenza continued to rise, anti-Coordinator riots erupted across the world, and Mendel was attacked by an armed group calling themselves Blue Cosmos. Having learned of the attack beforehand, Ulen Hibiki's wife Via Hibiki entrusted her children to the family of her sister, Caridad Yamato.[1]
55, October 29
  • Athrun Zala is born.
  • PLANT scientists from the city of Februarius developed a vaccine. Mass production and distribution to Earth begins. However, anti-Coordinator sentiments rose unabated, resulting in more and more Coordinators relocating to space.[1]
57
  • The combined space forces of the Atlantic Federation, the Eurasian Federation, and the Republic of East Asia establish a military presence in the PLANT sector. This combined force is the predecessor to the later OMNI Enforcer.[1]
58
  • Siegel Clyne and Patrick Zala are elected councilmen of the Supreme Council. Support for the Zodiac Alliance grows.
  • Uzumi Nara Athha becomes the chief representative of Orb. The construction of the orbital elevator Ame-no-Mihashira begins.[1]
60
  • The PLANT becomes a major source of Earth's energy and manufactured goods. The sponsor nations continue to reap ever greater benefits, and impose ever heavier quotas on the PLANT. Meanwhile, other nations grow increasingly resentful of the sponsor nations' monopoly profits.[1]
61
  • Councilman Zala survives a terrorist attack by an anti-Coordinator group. Feeling threatened, he sends his son Athrun to the lunar city Copernicus to study.
  • At the Copernicus junior school, Athrun meets Kira.[1]
62
  • The Orb Union is involved in territorial water dispute with Atlantic Federation.[2]
63
  • PLANT's energy production department is sabotaged by Blue Cosmos terrorists. The Supreme Council's request to pause energy transfer to Earth is denied by the sponsor nations. As a result, PLANT suffers a severe energy crisis.
  • To protest the decision of the sponsor nations, PLANT technicians organize a strike. In response, the sponsor nations threaten the PLANT with their mobile armor fleet. Siegel Clyne and Patrick Zala become leaders of a Supreme Council faction which seeks independence from the sponsor nations. Calls for independence within the PLANT grow much louder. A secret project to develop militarized Mobile Suits begin.[1]
65
  • First mobile suit developed; the Zodiac Alliance renames itself Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty (ZAFT) and steps up its activities and attract more sympathizers.[1]
67
  • ZAFT rolls out the YMF-01B Proto GINN, the first fully-functional mobile suit. A section of Maius city is secretly converted and begins production of mobile suits.[1]
68
  • Siegel Clyne is elected as the Chairman of the Supreme Council. With the majority of the Supreme Council being ZAFT members, the Council prioritizes autonomy and trade independence above all else and informs the sponsor nations of this in the PLANT operations meeting one month later.
  • The sponsor nations are extremely displeased by this and respond with a show of armed force. In response, the PLANT begins arms build up and a standoff ensues.
  • Blue Cosmos continues to grow, and claims to have membership in the hundreds of thousands, including self-proclaimed members. Persecution of Coordinators on Earth worsens. By this point, almost all Coordinators have emigrated to PLANT.
  • Chairman Clyne secretly visits the United States of South America and the Oceania Union, signing secret treaties of food import and industrial products export with the two nations. Learning of these arrangements, sponsor nations called for the resignation of Clyne and the dissolution of the Supreme Council, and demanded the PLANT to completely abandon autonomy. When these demands are ignored, they begin limiting food export to the PLANT.
  • The Mandelbrot incident: A PLANT transport fleet carrying food supplies from South America, including the cargo ship Mandelbrot, was shot down by the sponsor nations, killing hundreds of Coordinators. Tension rises rapidly.
  • Following the Mandelbrot incident, ZAFT, under the leadership of Patrick Zala, is merged with PLANT's existing police and security force, forming a military organization armed with mobile suits.
  • A biohazardous incident occurs in Mendel, causing many deaths. The colony is abandoned and sterilized using X-ray radiation. It is rumored that Blue Cosmos is responsible. GARM R&D becomes bankrupt.
  • Councilman Zala calls back Athrun from Copernicus. Athrun asks Kira to come to the PLANT with him. Kira stays in Copernicus, but promises that they will meet again some day.
  • Due to the deteriorating political situation, the Yamatos decide to move to Orb resource satellite Heliopolis.[1]
69
  • Chairman Siegel Clyne orders Junius 7 through 10 to remodel for agricultural production. The sponsor nations respond with intimidation maneuvers to prevent PLANT from producing their own food. A skirmish breaks out between sponsor nations and PLANT, ZAFT and its mobile suits make their combat debut, soundly defeat sponsor nation forces and drive them out of PLANT space despite being heavily outnumbered. The military nature of ZAFT and the existence of mobile suits become public.
  • Captain Halberton of Atlantic Federation 4th Fleet (which would later become OMNI Enforcer 8th Fleet) recognizes the effectiveness of mobile suits and proposes the mobile suit development program G Project to the military high command. The proposal is rejected, but continues in secret with the support of some Atlantic Federation senators.
  • Chairman Clyne demands full autonomy and equal trading to the sponsor nations.[1]
69, September 1
  • Kira Yamato enrolls in the Industrial College at Heliopolis.[1]
69 (cont'd)
  • The PLANT Supreme Council attempts to negotiate with sponsor nations several times, but receives no response. They declare that they will cease exporting resources to Earth if a response is not received by January 1, C.E. 70.
  • Tension between the sponsor nations and PLANT begins to escalate.[1]
70, January 1
  • PLANT Supreme Council members meet with representatives from sponsor nations in what would later be termed the "unheld meeting". A terror attack claims the life of a council member. Blue Cosmos claims responsibility for the attack, but when it becomes clear that the sponsor nations are behind this, PLANTs halt all exports of resources. The sponsor nations, being dependent on PLANT for these exports, are rendered destitute.
  • Government propaganda causes anti-PLANT and anti-Coordinator sentiments on Earth to rise to a fever pitch.[1]
70, February 5
  • The UN hosts a negotiation between sponsor nations and PLANT in Copernicus City. However, a terrorist attack wipes out the United Nations leadership on the moon in what would be known as the Tragedy of Copernicus. PLANT representative Siegel Clyne's shuttle is delayed from arriving.[1]
70, February 7
  • The Atlantic Federation accuses PLANT of conducting the terror attack in the Alaska Declaration, calling the attack a declaration of war against Earth, and by extension, against all Naturals. To replace the shattered United Nations, a new international group known as the Earth Alliance (also known as OMNI) is established.[1]

However, one of the mobile armor launches the nuclear missile at food production colony Junius Seven, one of the 120 colonies in PLANT. The colony is destroyed, killing all 243,721 residents, including Lenore Zala, councilman Zala's wife.
  • The Earth Alliance denies responsibility, claiming that PLANT self-destructed the colony.[1]
70, February 18
  • At a national memorial for the Bloody Valentine victims, Chairman Clyne formally declares PLANT's independence and vows to resist the Earth Alliance to the very end. He offers to give trading preferences to nations that decline to join the Alliance. The Oceania Union and the United States of South America accept Clyne's offer.[1]

  • First Battle of Victoria. ZAFT forces begin an invasion of Earth with Victoria spaceport as their target. This battle is the first orbital drop operation in history. However, since they are not supported by ground-based forces, the operation ends in failure.[1]
70, March 15
  • Assessing the failures of the Victoria attack, the PLANT Supreme Council decides on an equatorial campaign dubbed Operation Ouroboros.
  • The operation plan had three major objectives - securing military bases on Earth's surface, trapping the Alliance forces on Earth by capturing the spaceports and mass driver facilities located around the planet's equator, and scattering Neutron Jammers around the planet to prevent the use of nuclear weapons and cut off supplies of fission energy.[1]
  • As a propaganda effort, ZAFT globally broadcasts the unveiling of its Phase 1 series of mobile suits: ZGMF-515 CGUE, AMF-101 DINN, TMF/A-802 BuCUE, TFA-2 ZuOOT, UMF-4A GOOhN.[3][4]
70, April 1
  • Operation Uroboros begins. The April Fool's Crisis occurs when ZAFT drops ground-penetrating Neutron Jammers across the Earth, sending the planet into an energy crisis with the loss of nuclear power.

The Alliance loses its 3rd Fleet and its elite TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero corps, but is able to wipe out the ZAFT forces by overloading the Cyclops "mining" system. Many Alliance forces are also sacrificed in the process. Due to this defeat, ZAFT forces abandon the Grimaldi Front and temporarily withdraw from the moon.
  • During this battle, Mu La Flaga, the sole survivor of the Moebius Zero corps, shoots down five GINN in his Moebius Zero. In order to cover up their defeat, the Alliance made Flaga a propaganda hero, calling him the "Hawk of Endymion". He is later transferred from the destroyed 3rd fleet to the 7th fleet.
  • Having lost nearly all pilots capable of using Gunbarrels, the Alliance began mass producing the standard TS-MA2 Moebius, which eventually replaced the MAW-01 Mistral as their main battle weapon.
  • Rau Le Creuset also participates in the battle as the captain of the Laurasia-class warship Galvani. For his achievement in destroying the 3rd fleet, he is assigned the newly constructed Nazca-class warship Vesalius. The Le Creuset Team gains a reputation as an elite unit.[1]
