"My Turn X is incredible! It truly is the 's big brother!"

Gym Ghingham, ∀ Gundam, Moonlight Butterfly

The Concept-X 6-1-2 Turn X (aka Turn X) is a mobile suit introduced in ∀ Gundam and is piloted by Gym Ghingham.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Excavated from the Moon's Mountain Cycle, the Concept-X 6-1-2 Turn X is the "brother" unit of the System-∀99 ∀ Gundam. The number in its model code, "6-1-2," stands for "Project-6, Division-1, Block-2." Together with the ∀, they are known as the "Turn-types." The Turn-types represent the pinnacle of super-advanced technologies originating from the Dark History era, featuring unparalleled performance within the Correct Century. Even at the conclusion of the Dark History period, they remained unmatched by their contemporaries. Known for their ability to equip diverse weaponry and teleport, the Turn-types operate at a level beyond other mobile suits once their full capabilities are unleashed.[1]

The Turn X is a mysterious mobile suit believed to have been created by humans who ventured into outer space, and later drifted back to the Earth sphere. Due to this origin, it incorporates advanced and unknown technology that even the Moonrace, who possess the technology of the Dark History, cannot decipher.[2] The Turn X underwent repeated repairs before being unearthed in the Correct Century, which might have contributed to its unusual shape. Its legs have a unique structure, consisting of large feet divided into the front and back parts, with thruster vanes placed at the rear of the thighs. Like those of the ∀, the thruster vanes are a collection of two-dimensional nozzles, enabling flight under gravity as well as high-speed gliding above the ground.[3]

The Turn X's head unit, known as "X-Top," contains the mobile suit's cockpit.[3] The "Carapace" Weapon Platform on its back holds a 3-tube missile launcher, bazooka, beam rifle and hand beam gun. Its right arm is an aggregation of various melee and ranged weaponry, including the Fusion and Crushing Manipulator, which is the Turn X's most powerful weapon. It can also separate its body into 10 different parts, with all but one capable of functioning as individual beam weapons.[4][5] Furthermore, the Turn X is known to be able to collect an individual's biological reaction data such as Psycho waves.[3]

The Turn X's torso is capable of absorbing energy. Using this feature, the Turn X absorbs an attack from the Heat Fan in its short battle with the MRC-F20 SUMO.[3] Additionally, the Turn X appears to possess the ability to learn and copy. By importing data from the ∀ during close combat, it acquires the Moonlight Butterfly System.[6][7] The Moonlight Butterfly System's nanomachines can disintegrate all matter, including artificial objects and organic materials.[8][6][9] This devastating ability was responsible for the destruction of Earth's civilization in the ancient past.[10]

Armaments[]

  • "Carapace" Weapon Platform
A weapon platform equipped on the back of the Turn X. The Carapace houses the Turn X's various portable weapons. There are still many empty slots in the Carapace's storage pallet for weapons that may have been lost or may not have been found. Originally, the Carapace functioned as a propulsion system for interplanetary space travel, and it is said that it might have been excavated separately from the Turn X's main body.[4]
  • Bazooka
A portable weapon that fires physical projectiles, though it is unknown whether it operates through explosives or some electromagnetic-based technology. It is useful in situations where beam weapons are ineffective, such as when dealing with units equipped with I-Field. It is normally stored in the Carapace where it is maintained and resupplied with ammunitions, but the details are unclear. It is said that there is a variation of the Bazooka that fires beams.[4]
  • Beam Rifle
A portable weapon that appears to have been made in the same shape and size as the ∀'s beam rifle, featuring nearly identical specifications. It is used for medium and long-range combat, and can change modes to accommodate different situations. Mode conversion is determined automatically and executed by an inbuilt device that has a data link to the Turn X's main body. It is usually stored in the Carapace, where it is recharged and maintained, but the details are unknown.[4]
  • 3-tube Missile Launcher
A small triple-barreled projectile weapon capable of firing three missiles simultaneously,[2] but it seems to have never been used in actual combat.[4]
  • Hand Beam Gun
A small close-range beam firearm with excellent maneuverability,[2] but it seems to have never been used in actual combat.[4]
  • Mega Particle Cannon
The Turn X can separate its body into up to 10 components, with 9 of them capable of serving as remote weapons that can fire mega particle beams. The components are the torso, waist, left shoulder, right shoulder, left leg, right leg, left arm, the right arm, X-Top, and the Carapace. Only the X-Top is not equipped with a mega particle cannon.[4]
  • Fusion and Crushing Manipulator, Triple Beam Projection System, and Wire Claw
The Turn X's right arm is an aggregation of various weaponry, and is used more frequently than its other portable armaments.[4] It consists of three Wire Claws equipped with miniature claws and laser cannons on the tips, the Triple Beam Projection System which is also used during the all-range attack, as well as the Fusion and Crushing Manipulator - the Turn X's most powerful weapon which shapes a beam with an I-field in order to tear through a target.[4] The Fusion and Crushing Manipulator is recorded in the unit's database under the name of "Shining Finger"[4] and its beam can take on the form of a beam shot or a beam blade.[5]

Special Equipment and Features[]

  • X-Top
The head of the Turn X, the X-Top functions as both cockpit and evacuation system for the mobile suit. It also serves as the command center for the Turn X's all range attack and the orbital satellite cannon, Keilas Guilie, located on the Lunar surface. The Keilas Guillie was created as the ultimate weapon against extraterrestrial threat, though neither its usage records nor its existence have been discovered.[3][4] Although not equipped with weapons, the X-Top can generate a powerful I-Field capable of shielding itself and two other mobile suits (G-838 Mahiroo and GOLD SUMO) against the blast wave from a nuclear explosion.
  • All Range Attack
The Turn X can use its 10 separated body parts, excluding the X-Top, to perform an all range attack called "Bloody Siege," which has characteristics very similar to the Psycommu-guided "All Range Attack" known in the Dark History. Additionally, these parts can encircle a mobile suit and restrain it using a powerful disabling magnetic field.[4]
  • I-Field Barrier
The I-Field forms an invisible barrier around the Turn X, protecting it from beam attacks.
  • Moonlight Butterfly
Both the ∀ and Turn X are capable of a devastating attack called the "Moonlight Butterfly," which is performed by releasing countless nanomachines from the back section of the Turn-types. The nanomachines can be used offensively and defensively, such as disintegrating matter as well as absorbing energy from beam attacks and explosions.[6][8][9] In sufficient quantities, the nanomachines can change the landscape of an entire region, which led to the formation of Mountain Cycles on both Earth and the Moon. In fact, the majority of Earth's landscapes were created by these nanomachines, as past destruction caused by them covered the planet with a new layer of topsoil. These mountainous terrains have a unique sandy texture, composed of remnants of apoptosed nanomachines.[11]

Special Attacks[]

  • Shining Finger
The fusion and crushing manipulator housed inside the Turn X's right forearm, registered in the unit's database as "Shining Finger," is considered the most powerful among Turn X's armaments. It damages its target by releasing energy upon grabbing its opponent and possesses enough power to destroy a JMA0530 (MODEL U) Wodom in a single strike.[5][4]

History[]

The Turn X originated from beyond the solar system, created by humans who ventured into outer space in search of a new frontier in the distant past. The "X" in its name means "an object turned from its path by the tenth planet (Planet X)" and it is believed to have drifted to the Earth sphere for unknown reasons. It was originally made to be piloted by individuals once known as Newtypes, and therefore its full power cannot be realized in the Earth sphere of ∀ Gundam where Newtypes no longer exist. The unusual shape of its body resulted from repeated repairs prior to its excavation, often using parts salvaged from other units as makeshift measures, due to the unavailability of original components during those times.[3][4] In response to the perceived threat posed by its advanced technology and the specter of an invasion from powers outside the solar system, the people in the Earth sphere created the System-∀99 ∀ Gundam based on its system and technology.[4][12]

Although there was no invasion from outer space, the recurring conflicts in the Earth sphere led to a war of attrition. This culminated in a final battle between two factions: the Earthlings, who possessed the ∀, believed that civilization should be reset and rebuilt, while the Moonrace, with their Turn X, sought to resolve all conflicts with the power of technology. In the climactic stage of the battle known as the “Final War” which involved all of humanity, both Turn-types were deployed. Ultimately, the Turn X was defeated, and the ∀ brought about the destruction of civilization on Earth using its Moonlight Butterfly. The X-shaped mark on the Turn X's chest was the damage it sustained at that time which is not repairable by any means. In the aftermath of the war, the Earth's surface was covered by a new layer of topsoil and the Moonrace were forced to retreat from the Earth. Both Turn-types were then buried in the Mountain Cycles they created at their respective final destinations.[4][12] These events are assumed and heavily implied to have led to the beginning of C.C. 0001.

In C.C. 2345, amidst the ongoing conflict between Earthlings and the Moonrace, the political landscape on the Moon underwent significant changes. An alliance formed between Agrippa Maintainer and Gym Ghingham, aiming to seize power from Queen Dianna Soreil. During this time, Gym initiated research on the Dark History, and commenced excavations on the Lunar Mountain Cycle. These excavations uncovered several mobile suits such as the Turn X for his personal use, G-M1F Bandits (used by Merrybell Gadget), G-838 Mahiroos, J-2126 Muttowooos, and G-M2F Zssans.

Gym used the Turn X throughout the final stages of the Earthling-Moonrace conflict. With its overwhelming combat performance, the Turn X easily defeated most mobile suits in this conflict, including the advanced MRC-F20 SUMO. During their final battle at Lost Mountain, both Turn-types unleashed their Moonlight Butterflies and fought until they heavily damaged each other in close combat. Both Loran Cehack and Gym escaped unharmed and subsequently engaged in a short sword duel. Gym was then engulfed by the nanomachines as the Moonlight Butterflies from both Turn-types were unable to destroy each other. At the end of the battle, both Turn-types were enveloped in a nanomachine cocoon, sealing the menaces of Dark History once again.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Syd Mead considered the Turn X to be his best design in the series.
  • Takeshi Takakura designed the original Turn X (Turn X Early Production Type), which is meant to be a Turn X used before the events of ∀ Gundam. Some notable differences include:
    • A manipulator hand (which is capable of performing "Shining Finger") instead of the Fusion and Crushing Manipulator on the right arm, the former couldn't be reproduced due to insufficient technology.
    • The X-shaped scar on its chest is missing.
    • The Carapace backpack has a more symmetrical design, instead of being asymmetrical.
    • White was used instead of light green for its armor, along with discoloration patches to represent Nanoskin dysfunction.
  • The Turn X appears in Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden and Super Robot Wars Z, both of which use the storyline of ∀ Gundam as part of their plot. The Turn X is briefly playable in Z during an event taken from Gundam SEED Destiny.
  • The Turn X appears as a playable mobile suit in the second and third Dynasty Warriors Gundam games. Although it first appeared as an underpowered non-license mobile suit in the second game, it was upgraded into a full-fledged licensed mobile suit in the third.
  • In SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays, Gundam-exclusive abilities do not activate for the Turn X, implying that it is not considered a Gundam-type.
  • According to Morita Shigeru, who was in charge of the setting of ∀ Gundam, the Turn X was given its name because at that time, Pluto was still considered the ninth planet. The mobile suit was found near what would have been the "tenth planet," hence the designation "X."[13]
    • Shigeru also stated that there was a backstory in which the Turn X was a weapon used in interstellar wars in other star systems by humans who advanced beyond the solar system thousands of years in the past,[14][15][16] and drifted into the orbit near the tenth planet in the Oort cloud,[15] or Edgeworth-Kuiper belt.[16] In other words, it "left Earth, returned, and was recovered near the tenth planet," hence the name "Turn X."[16]
