Chief Representative is a term introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview[]
The Chief Representative is the official leader of the Orb Union. As the island nation is ran by numerous influential families, the Chief Representative acts as their voice for the nation, and serves as the head of the council of the Five Great Clans.
History[]
Orb's earliest known Chief Representative was Uzumi Nara Athha, who took the position in C.E. 58. At the onset of the First Alliance-PLANT War, Uzumi lead the nation with his staunch pacifist and neutral stances. However, when it became known that Orb, via Morgenröte, had participated in the Earth Alliance's creation of the G Project mobile suits in defiance of such ideals, Uzumi stepped down as Chief Representative and was replaced by his brother Homura.[1][2] However, despite no longer holding the position, it was something of an open secret that Uzumi still led Orb, as Homura defered to him in all major decision.[3] At the end of the Battle of Orb, Uzumi and most other heads sacrificed their lives while destroying the Morgenröte Facility and Kaguya Mass Driver while Homura stayed behind to lead Orb during its occupation and restoration of independence.[4]
Following the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War, Homura stepped down and Uzumi's daughter, Cagalli Yula Athha took over as Chief Representative in C.E. 72. However, her time proved to be a difficult one. Following the "Break The World" Incident and the start of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Orb officials feared a second invasion by the Earth Alliance and strong-armed the untested Cagalli into siding with the Earth Alliance in defiance of their neutral stances.[5][6] At the same time, the Seiran family sought to gain power and convinced Cagalli to marry Yuna Roma Seiran.[7] Before that could happen, Kira Yamato, Cagalli's twin brother, kidnapped her at her wedding, leading to the Seirans to take control with Yuna filling in as Chief Representative.[8][9]
When Cagalli resurfaced during the Battle of Dardanelles, Yuna made the hasty decision of declaring her a fake, cementing himself as Chief Representative, only to prove to be completely inept as a commander.[10] His ineptness proved to be his undoing, when his blatant lies in telling ZAFT that they did not have Lord Djibril in their nation lead to Operation Fury. However, Cagalli was returned and, after tricking Yuna into admitting she was the real Cagalli, regained her power and position, using it to put Yuna under arrest for his actions.[11][12] Following the battle, Cagalli remained in Orb to lead her nation once more.[13][14]
