The real Char Aznable was a son of Roger Aznable, an administrator of the Texas space colony owned by the Yashima Company. His appearance was identical to Casval Rem Deikun (then, using the alias Édouard Mass), except for a difference in iris color. He went to boarding school at Side 5 "Loum". Eventually, Char was taken in by Gihren Zabi's propaganda, and against his father's wishes, set off for the academy. Casval decided to accompany him under the guise of looking out for his friend.
Kycilia Zabi discovered that Casval was headed back to Side 3, and without consulting Gihren, ordered Casval's death. Both near identical boys were booked to leave on the same flight, but an antique pistol and fake explosives (actually a box of yōkan) were found in Char's bag (almost certainly planted by Casval). Not wanting to miss the entrance exam, Char readily accepted Casval's suggestion to swap clothes in the restroom. Char boarded the ship under the name Édouard Mass, while Casval, under the name Char Aznable was detained overnight. Shortly after the departure, an explosive planted by Kycilia Zabi's agents explodes and destroyed the ship, killing everyone aboard. Édouard Mass was listed among the dead and Casval takes on the name Char and returned to Side 3 in U.C. 0074, intent upon entering the Zeon Military Academy.
