Challia Bull (シャリア・ブル Sharia Buru?) is a main character featured in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.

Background Information[]

During the One Year War, Cpt. Challia Bull was the commander of Zeon's Jupiter Energy Fleet.[1] As the war between Zeon and Earth Federation ran into stalemate, Bull was summoned by Commander-in-Chief Gihren Zabi to support Kycilia Zabi, commander of Mobile Assault Force, based on his merit at the Jupiter Fleet and his potential as a Newtype.[1] Bull was soon placed under the command of Col. Char Aznable, whose achievement of obtaining Federal Force's secret weapon, Gundam and Pegasus began to turn the tide of war in Zeon's favor.[2] Bull became the pilot of MAN-03 Kikeroga mobile armor and together with Char, the duo formed the famous combat partnership known as MAV,[2] whose tactics commanded fear and respect among friends and foes alike long after the war ended.

In UC 0085, Bull, now a Lieutenant Colonel, commanded the Sodon Fleet in search of Char and his Red Gundam since their disappearance after the conclusion of Operation Solomon Drop on January 3, UC 0080.[2]

Personality & Character[]

Beneath his cool and calm exterior, Bull was an honest and approachable person who spoke his mind when the time was right, such as his time with Char which made him at ease, with the latter's honesty in his vision after the war convinced Bull that there might be a better future for Newtypes and Humankind after all. As the result, Bull wholeheartedly believed in Char's course and was willing to go through the thick and thin with the young colonel, no matter how daunting the task would be.[2]

Bull showed his caring side to his subordinates when he personally welcomed back 2nd. Lt. Xavier Olivette who was released from Side 6 military police's detention after losing the GQuuuuuuX to the Pomeranians.[2] Instead of rebuking, he gave the young lieutenant bandages and asked about his suffering from the police.

However underneath his caring demeanor, Bull is enigmatic as his goals aren't clear to everyone as shown he is not in a rush to retrieve the GQuuuuuuX. What more as pointed out by Comoli Harcourt he only sent Xavier to look for the GQuuuuuX alone.

Well known to his colleague as the Man from Jupiter (木星帰りの男 Mokusei kaeri no otoko?)[1][3][2] during and after the war, Bull was a Newtype with strong spatial awareness and intuition, which allowed him not only to decipher other people's intentions accurately, but also let him to pilot the Kikeroga with ease and push the mobile armor's potential to the limit to inflicted great loss to the Federation fleets and mobile suits. Bull's brilliant achievement earned him and Kikeroga the nickname Grey Ghost (灰色の幽霊 Haiiro no Yūrei?).[3] Bull and Char were the inventors of the MAV tactic, where two pilots paired up to cover each other's disadvantages during mobile suit combats[2]. Their mutual partnership and mental affinity were strong that by UC 0085, Bull could correctly sense the Red Gundam pilot in UC 0085 was not the missing colonel but someone else instead,[2] as well as correctly sensed more than one person had piloted the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX and successfully activated its Omega Psycommu system.[4]

As a commander, Bull was bold, decisive and well-versed in space colony's rules and regulations, such as going at length to force Side 6 government to release Olivette by ordering the Sodon flied inside the Izuma colony as a show of force without provoking armed conflict by not dispersing Minovsky particles.[2]

History[]

UC 0079[]

Cpt. Challia Bull was transferred to Col. Char Aznable's Sodon Fleet after the latter requested to have staff members with similar Newtype abilities like him. Bull devoted himself to Char's course after the colonel offered to get him out of the political conflict between the Zabi siblings, as well as sharing his visions for the Spacenoid's future.[2] To thwart Wakkein's plan to drop Solomon at Zeon's lunar base at Granada, Bull and Char along with Sodon carrier forced their way into the emptied astroid fortress by planning timed explosives in an attempt to diverge the falling Solomon away from Granada.[2] Due to the unexpected Psycommu resonance between Char's Red Gundam and Zeon's secret weapon under development, Bull could do nothing but to watch the resulting aura and explosion pushed Solomon away from Granada with Char and his Gundam disappeared ever since.[2]

UC 0085[]

Bull was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel after the One Year War[3] and was the Commander of the Sodon Fleet in search of the missing Char Aznable and the Red Gundam since the Zeknova incident[2]. President Aide Cameron Bloom even remarked that he seemed to still be in thrall to the Colonel.[2][5]

Challia had sent Xavier Olivette on a secret mission to go after the gMS-α Red Gundam, however, Xavier failed to do so and was detained by Side 6's military police, losing the GQuuuuuuX in the progress. After displaying a show of force to Side 6 and successfully getting Xavier back, they entered a bar and watched the GQuuuuuuX's first Clan Battle. Throughout the battle, he became even more sure that the Red Gundam's pilot was not Char, though his disappointment was soon replaced by intrigue from seeing how the GQuuuuuuX's current pilot fight.[2][5]

Challia was delighted with how the GQuuuuuuX's pilot had become so proficient in using the Omega Psycommu, much to the dismay of Comoli Harcourt, who was reporting their failed investigation regarding the Pomeranians and the GQuuuuuuX's whereabouts. During the Pomeranians vs. CRS battle, not only could Challia accurately identify the techniques and technologies used but also managed to pinpoint the person who helped make it happened. As Xavier was lamenting the morbid ending of the battle despite it being only a game, Challia remarked that Newtypes had killed too many people, and thus, it was natural that they got possessed by hatred.[6]

Xavier had taken on the mission to find the GQuuuuuuX all by himself, an almost impossible feat, yet Challia was being very nonchalant about it, to the point Comoli likened it to him getting rid of a nuisance. Challia only reiterated that he had faith in Xavier on the account of him being a Newtype. More death happened by the GQuuuuuuX's hand and Comoli urged him to take the Gundam back ASAP, and even though Challia found such MAV maneuver acceptable, he acknowledged the risks it posed and called for the MAN-03 Kikeroga to be brought to Izuma.[7]

After the Kikeroga had been brought into Izuma's buffer zone, Challia met with Captain Simus Al Bakharov, who was in charged of the mobile armor. They explained to a confused Comoli the reason a prohibited Psycommu-equipped machine was brought in was because a secret meeting between Kycilia and Side 6's President would be taking place in a few days. Seeing how the security at Side 6 was less than abysmal, such measures must be taken to ensure Kycilia's safety, especially considering Side 6 favored Gihren more than her.[4]

Challia had contacted and arranged a meeting with Annqi regarding the GQuuuuuuX's return as they had gathered sufficient combat data. He told her they would take the Gundam back after one more clan battle as he would like to see the wonderful MAV maneuver again, being a Pomeranians' fan and all. However, he was suspected by Annqi to have meddled in their clan affairs due to their next opponent, the Twelve Olympians clan, had been acquired by a new owner, and she had bad feelings about it.[4]

Later on, as Xavier was being cornered and almost killed by Side 6's military police, Challia appeared from above using a Jetpack and killed them. Not wanting to give Side 6 reasons to board and search the Sodon, Challia would contact Gihren's Secret Services to deal with the corpses. This, unfortunately, reinforced Asset's warning to Xavier about not trusting him.[4]

  • The GQuuuuuuX version of Challia Bull in UC 0085 bears a strong resemblance to Flit Asuno during the second arc of Mobile Suit Gundam AGE.
  • His rank in the official English translation is Lieutenant (UC 0079), and later, Commander (UC 0085),[8] which are the Naval ranking equivalent of the Army ranking Captain and Lieutenant Colonel.
  • He is called Green Uncle (緑おじさん Midori no Ojisan?) by Japanese audience.
  • Challia Bull's English voice actor is credited as "Fajer Kaisi" in "The Red Gundam" and as "Fajer Al-Kaisi" in the rest of the series.
