The Blue Cosmos Attack on Mendel is a conflict from the Cosmic Era.

Prelude[]

Ever since George Glenn’s disclosure about his origins as a genetically altered human and the massive influx of such beings into the population during the Coordinator Boom, Blue Cosmos had spent decades committing terrorist actions in their campaign of extermination against Coordinators. In C.E. 55, Doctor Ulen Hibiki had successfully created the Ultimate Coordinator, a human birthed through the Artificial Womb that possessed none of the negative traits of the normal Coordinator process. This being was in fact his own son, Kira Hibiki, who was born with a Natural twin sister named Cagalli Hibiki. Through an unknown information source, news of the project's success reached Blue Cosmos, whose members were determined to see the Ultimate Coordinator die.[1]

The Battle[]

In May of C.E. 55, Blue Cosmos members stormed the G.A.R.M. R&D Facility, destroying the project’s research and killing the scientists. Ulen and his wife Via Hibiki were killed in the attack, however, Kira and Cagalli managed to survive, having escaped the Mendel colony in the care of their maternal aunt, Caridad Yamato.

Aftermath[]

Blue Cosmos continued their search, with Kira becoming their highest priority target, and made at least one other attempt on his life.[2][3] Eventually, Caridad and her husband Haruma Yamato met with Uzumi Nara Athha, and an agreement was made where, in order to protect the children from Blue Cosmos, Kira would stay with Caridad and Haruma to be adopted and raised as their son, while Cagalli would be adopted by Uzumi and raised as his daughter.[4]

In early C.E. 71, during the First Alliance-PLANT War, Kira and Cagalli would encounter one another and the two would form a strong friendship despite neither knowing of their shared parentage.[5] It wouldn’t be until months later that Uzumi revealed to Cagalli that Kira was her twin brother, giving her a picture of the two of them as infants with their birth mother Via.[6] Soon after, at the abandoned GARM R&D facility, Kira would learn the truth of his origins from Rau Le Creuset, another human whose existence was a result of the facility’s scientists.[1]
