Birnam is a private military organization belonging to Scharnhorst Buch, the founder of Buch Junk Inc., a debris salvaging company that is part of the conglomerate Buch Concern and a subcontractor of Anaheim Electronics.

Overview[]

Birnam, also known as "Birnam Wood," was a private army established before the Crossbone Vanguard. Founded by Meitzer Ronah, it was created out of his belief that illegal means were sometimes necessary to acquire the base machines and technology required for the Buch Concern to begin full-scale mobile suit development. Operating under his direction, Birnam functioned as a highly skilled industrial espionage force. Many of its members were former military personnel, including the Fermo brothers—ex-Cyber Newtypes from the Newtype Research Institute—who had gained renown in the underworld as mercenaries and mobile suit pilots.[1]

History[]

In U.C. 0096, Birnam attacked the Federation Special Forces unit "Mastema" as it entered Axis to carry out the "Psychoframe Recovery Project." However, their leadership and coordination were no match for a true military force, and they were quickly neutralized in a counterattack, with their apparent leader captured. The Fermo brothers managed to corner enemy mobile suits and mobile armor but were ultimately forced to retreat before they could reach them. Later, in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula, set in U.C. 0115, command of Birnam was entrusted to Carozzo Ronah.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Birnam Wood is a real forest in Scotland, but it’s most famous because of its role in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. In the play, the witches tell Macbeth he’ll be safe until “Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane.”
