The Beam Shield is a defensive technology introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Technological Overview

Derived from the "Armure Lumiere", a variation of the Lightwave Barrier, a beam shield is an energy shield capable of defending against most physical and beam weaponry. Emitted from a beam shield generator, a beam shield's strong defensive power comes at a cost of high energy consumption. Like the "Armure Lumiere", it is possible for the equipped mobile suit to attack from behind the beam shield. Additionally, the shape of the beam shield can be altered freely. Interestingly, a beam shield was also capable of penetrating the Positron Reflector.

History

During the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Earth Alliance personnel from the Eurasian Federation defected to ZAFT, bringing with them the knowledge of Armure Lumiere. With this information, ZAFT created a new version of energy shield, the beam shields. The first known mobile suits to use this type of defense were ZAFT's ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam and ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam. Later, Terminal/Clyne Faction acquired the technology and incorporated it into the ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam, the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam, the ZGMF-XX09T DOM Troopers, and then later, the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II, the ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II, and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II. Orb Union also got hold of this technology and incorporated it to the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam's "Shiranui" Space Pack's M531R Guided Mobile Beam Turret System. An interesting variation of the beam shield is used by the ZGMF-2025/F GELGOOG Menace, which uses a solid shield with gaps that are filled in by the beam shield technology.
