The Battle of Requiem Station Gounod (The Requiem Tragedy) is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Ever since Operation Ragnarök, Lord Djibril had been on the run from ZAFT's forces, being the last remaining member of Logos either not captured or killed. Their attempt to capture him in the Orb Union, Operation Fury, had been a failure on two fronts as not only had Djibril escaped but Cagalli Yula Athha had been able to reassert her authority as leader of the island nation and reaffirmed her nation's neutrality stance. Even more, ZAFT's credibility was tarnished when Meer Campbell's duplicity was exposed after Lacus Clyne made her first televised appearance in two years, denouncing both sides' actions.[1][2]

Djibril made his way to the Daedalus Lunar Base with the intent of using the Requiem superweapon to attack the Supreme Council on Aprilius One and end the war his way. Unbeknown to him at the time, the Joule and Channis teams, by pure chance, had discovered one of the special components of the weapon, Station Gounod, and attempted to attack it. PLANT Supreme Chairman Gilbert Durandal was also informed of the situation, though both he and most of the military were unable to properly identify the device that the Alliance forces were moving.

The Battle[]

Upon finding a large Alliance fleet escorting a modified open space colony, the Joule Team's commander, Yzak Joule, wasted little time in engaging. After a brief skirmish, however, the Alliance forces began pulling out suspiciously. Unable to discern their enemy's thoughts, Yzak ignored the fleeing opponents and ordered his troops to destroy Gounod's engines to stop the colony's movements and subject it to an investigation.

Before the Joule and Channis teams could examine any further, Djibril finally fired Requiem from the Daedalus base at the far side of the moon intending to hit the PLANT capital of Aprilius One. Seeing the impending danger, ZAFT forces scattered and escaped its line of fire, but to their horror, Requiem's beam would finally reach the PLANT colonies. Januarius 1-4 would be hit directly by Requiem, and Januarius 4's spiral out of control would also cause it to collide with December 7 and 8.[2]

It would be revealed at Daedalus that the destruction of Gounod's engines resulted in its angle going off and causing its line of fire to deviate. Infuriated by the turn of events, Yzak ordered the remaining forces to eliminate any remaining Alliance forces in the vicinity. The enraged ZAFT forces would then destroy Gounod in retaliation before moving to hunt down any other relay station they could find.[2]

Aftermath[]

Though Aprilius One was saved from destruction, the damage done to the other PLANT colonies by Requiem was harsh. Januarius 1-4 were completely destroyed and December 7 and 8 collapsed, killing over a million Coordinators. Though Gounod was destroyed, the weapon's other relay station could be used in its place, Djibril's key strategy exposed his location and Requiem's ability to ZAFT. ZAFT would then order a simultaneous attack on both relay station Faure as well as Requiem's control center at Daedalus.[3]
