The Battle of Messiah is a conflict featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, and the final decisive battle of the Second Alliance-PLANT War.

Prelude[]

After dealing with Lord Djibril and Logos, PLANT Supreme Chairman Gilbert Durandal announced the Destiny Plan, a grand solution to solve human conflict by training and guiding people only to what they were genetically best suited for. In spite of its lofty ideals, some were still opposed to this plan as it essentially stripped people of their freedom of choice in their own future. Three major opposition factions would emerge: the Earth Alliance, Kingdom of Scandinavia, and the Orb Union.[1]

Durandal, to the shock of both allies and enemies, would reveal the newly acquired Requiem from Logos and fired upon the Alliance's remaining lunar base at Arzachel, killing Atlantic Federation president, Joseph Copeland as well as crippling most of the Alliance's military power. In response to the danger of it firing upon the opposing factions at Earth, members of the Three Ships Alliance scrambled their space fleet alongside the surviving Alliance forces and a small fleet of defectors from ZAFT.[1]

While they successfully destroyed the critical Station One from which the beam needed to curve to the other relay stations, Durandal anticipated this and used Station One as a bait to separate the numerically inferior enemy and was ready to attack in full.[2]

The Battle[]

As the Archangel and the Eternal just destroyed Station One, Durandal emerged with his mobile space fortress, Messiah and attacked the Kusanagi's strike force using Neo-GENESIS, a smaller version of Patrick Zala's superweapon from the previous war.[2] While the Kusanagi escaped, half of the strike force was obliterated in mere seconds. Afterwards, Messiah sent out Shinn Asuka and Rey Za Burrel's ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam and ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam to engage Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala's ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam and ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam.[3]

The Minerva and other forces that participated in defending Station One also turned to engage both the Archangel and the Eternal in order to both keep them from rendezvousing with the Kusanagi and to buy time for Requiem and Neo-GENESIS' recharging. Lunamaria Hawke's ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam led several attempts to strike the Eternal, but was repelled every time by the ship's three ZGMF-XX09T DOM Trooper. Both Athrun and Kira were quick to catch on to the enemy's plan, and Kira ordered both Athrun and the Archangel to head back towards Requiem while he and the Eternal pushed towards Messiah. In response, Rey ordered Shinn to accompany the Minerva to pursue the Archangel.[3]

Upon splitting up, Athrun encountered the Impulse and promptly cut off one of its arms and legs as Lunamaria attacked him. Shinn, angered by Athrun's battle with Lunamaria, took control of the dogfight and attacked Athrun instead. Despite activating SEED mode, Athrun gradually gained the advantage; knocking away both of the Destiny's "Flash-Edge 2" beam boomerangs and destroying its "Arondight" Beam Sword. Lunamaria eventually cracked at seeing the pair's emotional clash of philosophies and stepped in front of the Destiny's "Palma Fiocina" Palm Beam Cannon in an attempt to stop the fight. When an emotionally charged Shinn tried to attack her anyway, Athrun finally activated SEED mode as well, destroying both of the Destiny's hands and a leg, sending Shinn crashing down to the lunar surface, while Lunamaria immediately disengaged to check on Shinn.[3]

The Archangel's battle against the Minerva also fared similarly as, while it lost one of its "Gottfried MK.71" Dual Beam Cannons, it successfully barrel rolled above the Minerva and destroy most of its armaments with its "Valiant MK.8" Linear Cannon. Athrun, now free from Shinn and Lunamaria, delivered the coup de grâce by sending his Fatum-01 sub-flighter to ram through the Minerva's main thrusters, causing it to lose control and crash onto the lunar surface as well.[3]

Concurrently, Kira prevailed in his dogfight against Rey as he managed to pick off several of the Legend Gundam's Super DRAGOONs. When the two debated regarding Durandal's plan as well as the revelation that Rey was a clone of Kira's old enemy, Rau Le Creuset, Rey was stunned as Kira openly told him of his desire of a future created by their own hand and that he had that choice too. This gave the Strike Freedom the opportunity to use its Full Burst Mode, crippling the Legend. Kira subsequently fell back to the Eternal to request his METEOR before charging straight for Messiah.[3]

By this time, however, ZAFT forces had bought enough time for Neo-GENESIS to fire for the second time, and Durandal immediately sent a notification to all their forces in the vicinity to flee from the line of fire. What he did not anticipate, however, was that ZAFT defectors also received this alert, and Yzak Joule immediately informed the Three Ships Alliance of the impending attack. Though the attack still managed to strike the Three Ships Alliance's fleet, both Archangel and the Eternal and majority of their mobile suits were spared, while the attack also struck down the allied vessels Marvest and Burton. As Requiem also prepared to fire, both the ∞ Justice, and Mu La Flaga's ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam, penetrated the weapon's Postiron Reflectors using their beam shield and anti-beam system respectively, and destroyed the weapon together as the ∞ Justice's Fatum-01 and the Akatsuki's DRAGOONs devastated the Requiem's core.[3]

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: The Edge, Shinn's battle with Athrun was directly connected with Requiem's destruction as he used the Destiny's superior speed to damage Athrun's METEOR, and cut off the ∞ Justice's right arm. Athrun used the destruction of the arm to break from their fight as he headed towards Requiem with Shinn in hot pursuit. Whilst fighting near the core, Athrun managed to steal the Destiny's beam sword and sent both it and the Fatum-01 to destroy Requiem by himself. The ending of the fight remains similar as an enraged Shinn attempted to continue attacking Athrun, with Lunamaria attempted to intervene, and Athrun defeated Shinn. As the Minerva was already sunk by this time, it can be assumed that the Akatsuki, which was not present inside Requiem, took over Athrun's role in helping defeat the Minerva.[3]

With nothing to hold them back any further, Kira used his METEOR's beam blades to cut through Messiah's positron reflector generators before he and the Eternal unleashed a missile salvo; destroying the majority of the fortress' outer defenses. Kira then entered one of the hangers and unleashed a METEOR-mounted Full Burst Mode attack to critically damage the entire structure. Despite this, Kira himself opted to exit his unit to either search out and kill Durandal or confirm his death. At the same time, Athrun, having seen Kira enter the fortress, immediately went into the hangars to search for him, while Talia Gladys, the captain of the Minerva, who was also outraged by the friendly fire from the second firing of Neo-GENESIS, entered the fortress as well.[3]

Ultimately, Kira and Durandal found each at the fortress' command center and once again debated as Athrun, Talia, and Rey, who had managed to limp his way back to Messiah, readied their weapons from behind. In the end, Durandal was shot by Rey, who was finally moved by Kira's words of a future of their own. Conceding defeat, Durandal remained with Gladys and Rey as they perished together while Kira and Athrun escaped from Messiah. (In the original, Athrun never entered Messiah and instead rejoined the Archangel and Eternal)[3]

Once she was assured that their pilots were safe, Lacus Clyne issued a statement to the ZAFT forces via the Gondwana, asking for an end to the battle as they had already accomplished their only goal of destroying the superweapons. Seeing little point in further bloodshed, the remaining ZAFT forces agreed to Lacus' terms and all ships on both sides released retreat flares for all their units.[3]

Aftermath[]

Following the battle death, a diplomatic conference occurred between PLANT and the Orb Union, which finally put an end to the Second Alliance-PLANT War. Lacus, who acted as the intermediary between the two, was requested to return back to PLANT in contrast to her decision to retire in seclusion in the previous war. By the end, Lacus succeeded Durandal and became the new Supreme Chairwoman of PLANT in the effort to promote peace.[3]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The battle appears in Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn where it is merged with the Attack on Requiem Station One as the final stage in Gundam SEED Destiny's story. The Battle of Messiah only begins in the second phase of the battle once Rey departs to engage Kira as players are given Athrun's perspective as he must defeat both Shinn and Lunamaria to cover the advance towards Requiem. Following Athrun's section, the player is then given Kira's perspective as he must defeat Rey in a final duel to reach Messiah.
