The Battle of Gulnahan is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Following the declaration of war by the Earth Alliance, ZAFT's bases in Africa and the Middle East found themselves under attack by the renewed Alliance. One contentious area was the no man's land between the Alliance's Suez Base and ZAFT's base at Gibraltar, which had a base at Mahamul near the Persian Gulf as a buffer.

The local position, however, was in danger thanks to the Alliance forces occupying Gulnahan and establishing the Lohengrin Gate, a mountain fortress with a Positron Blaster Cannon inside, and heavily protected by several mobile suits and a YMAG-X7F Gells-Ghe which also wielded a Positron Reflector to defend the fortress. ZAFT's attempts to take or destroy the fortress ended in failure. In response, the local Ruddle Team requested aid from the warship, Minerva, and also obtained assistance from local resistance fighters represented by Conille Almeta. While Gulnahan's residents were more tolerant or content with ZAFT's presence, the city's strategic location in the Persian Gulf led to an armed occupation by the Alliance which saw torture and executions of any suspected of showing sympathy to the Coordinators.

FAITH member, Athrun Zala, alongside the Minerva and Ruddle Team would launch a frontal assault to catch the attention of the Alliance forces while Shinn Asuka was to sneak through and blow an opening in one of the mountain ranges' caves to destroy the Positron Cannon with help from the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam's smaller component parts.

The Battle[]

The Minerva first advanced alongside the Desmond and Bagley. Before the ships sent out their units, Shinn was prematurely deployed to begin moving toward his target point before the Alliance could catch sight of his allies. The Alliance commander quickly noticed the ZAFT ships and deployed the Gells-Ghe alongside several GAT-02L2 Dagger L to defend the Positron Cannon.

Athrun would lead the other Minerva pilots with his ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam in engaging and distracting most of the enemy mobile suits as the Gells-Ghe was busy fending off attacks from the ships. The operation nearly went awry when the Minerva was nearly struck by the fortress' "Lohengrin" Positron Blaster Cannon, and the ship was forced to charge forward to avoid the shot. Seeing that they had missed, the Alliance quickly ordered their Gells-Ghe to pull back and protect the recharging cannon, but Shinn had managed to emerge from the mountains in time and quickly assembled his unit before targeting the Alliance's Lohengrin as it was being retracted.

Athrun quickly moved to disarm the Gells-Ghe as Shinn began destroying the emplaced weapons and mobile suits near Lohengrin. Seeing that the weapon had already been retracted, Shinn hurled a damaged Dagger L into the hatch before it could close and destroyed it with the Impulse's CIWS. The explosion of the mobile suit quickly destroyed both itself and Lohengrin. Lohengrin Gate's fuel was also caught by the blast, and the Alliance's entire line of defense quickly imploded, and its forces were immediately forced to flee from Gulnahan.

Aftermath[]

Following the battle, the locals quickly welcomed the ZAFT forces and began to execute the Alliance soldiers that had failed to escape, several being either shot or beaten to death by the irate citizens. The city would remain within ZAFT's sphere of influence for the remainder of the war.
