The Battle of Daedalus is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Following his daring escape from Orb, Lord Djibril fired the superweapon, Requiem, in the hopes of destroying the capital of PLANT, Aprilius One. Unfortunately, the nearby skirmish from the Joule Team disrupted the intended firing path and accidentally destroyed Januarius 1-4 and December 7 and 8 instead. Gounod, which was placed strategically to curve Requiem's beam to any of the other relay stations, was promptly destroyed by the Joule Team as they continued their hunt.

The deaths of over a million Coordinators led to a swift punitive attack by ZAFT who were able to finally pinpoint Djibril's location to the Alliance's lunar base, Daedalus. The Minerva, which had spearheaded the hunt for the members of Logos since the Battle of Heaven's Base, was ordered to sneak through Daedalus' surface defense and disable the weapon's control center while the Joule Team attacked the other relay stations to draw as much of the Alliance's attention and defenders away from the Minerva.

The Battle[]

The battle began when the Joule Team found Relay Station Faure and began a heavy assault on its defenders. Once the main part of Daedalus' fleet had left to join the battle against the Joule Team, the Minerva finally began moving towards the lunar base. The plan was to use Lunamaria Hawke's ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam to sneak through the hangar to reach the control center.

Upon realizing that the Minerva was lurking so close by, the base's defenders quickly rushed out with several GAT-04 Windam, YMAF-X6BD Zamza-Zah, YMAG-X7F Gells-Ghe, and even three GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam to intercept the ship. In response, both Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam and Rey Za Burrel's ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam were sent out to engage and provide an opening for Lunamaria to sneak by.

While a few mobile suits and mobile armors spotted Lunamaria, Shinn quickly cut them down and returned to attacking the base, while Lunamaria blew an opening inside Requiem's hangar. Realizing that they were losing the battle against the Minerva, Djibril ordered for Requiem to fire again before it was fully recharge. A second complication, however, arose as Yzak Joule had broken through the Alliance blockade at Faure and was attacking the relay station at full force. In response, Djibril ordered for the weapon to be fired anyway, intending to at least inflict casualties to the Joule Team and cause enough chaos to escape capture again.

Near the battle's conclusion, the Minerva's forces had now destroyed most of the Daedalus' defenders and were now split; the Minerva attacking the base's structures, the Destiny destroying all of the docked Nelson-class ships to prevent any escape, and the Legend waiting outside to catch any stragglers. As Djibril entered a Girty Lue-class ship to make his escape, the Impulse had found the control center and destroyed it before Requiem could be fired a second time. At the same time, the Destiny Gundam detonated several Nelson-class ships in the spaceport. The resulting explosion destroyed the command room, killing the base's command staff.

Nonetheless, Djibril attempted to escape once again, but was spotted by Rey, who immediately pierced the ship's main bridge with the Legend's beam spike, killing Djibril, before destroying the ship with the rest of his DRAGOONs.

Aftermath[]

With the death of Djibril, the Atlantic Federation had lost its most influential figure and power began to fall back to Joseph Copeland, who, until that point, had only acted under Djibril's instructions. As the Earth Alliance's space forces were devastated by the loss of Daedalus, PLANT Supreme Chairman, Gilbert Durandal had finally been able to eliminate the greatest thorn to his side, and confidently marched forward with his grand ambition: The Destiny Plan, a radical solution to conflict that provided people with the guidance of only following what they were genetically suited for. To further enforce this plan, Durandal did not have Requiem taken apart as was publicly reported by ZAFT and, instead, built a new control center under his direct control inside his space fortress, Messiah.

This announcement shocked several nations both within and outside PLANT. While there was wide acclaim for Durandal's progressive thinking for humanity's evolution, the plan was vehemently opposed by three major nations: Copeland's Atlantic Federation, Cagalli Yula Athha's Orb Union, and the Kingdom of Scandinavia, with the latter two arguing that Durandal's plan stripped people of their individuality and their ability to carve their own future. In response, Durandal proceeded to use the repaired Requiem to fire upon the Earth Alliance's remaining lunar base at Arzachel, killing Copeland and devastating the Alliance's remaining forces in space.

Fearing that they were next, the Orb Union scrambled its space fleet, alongside its allies in the Three Ships Alliance, survivors of the Alliance's space fleet, and a small portion of ZAFT forces that deserted following the use of Requiem, to destroy both the superweapon and its relay stations.
