Martin: "It's about that time of day when the town calls it a night."
Andrew: "Some might consider putting them to sleep eternally. But I'm not that kind of person. We'll issue a warning first, and then attack fifteen minutes later."

Martin DaCosta and Andrew Waltfeld about not killing the people of Tassil, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Cagalli Returns

The Attack on Tassil is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Prelude[]

When the Alliance's space assault ship, the Archangel accidentally landed in ZAFT North Africa, it was aided by members of the Desert Dawn resistance group that had been actively fighting against Commander Andrew Waltfeld's grip on the area.[1] In response to interfering with his battle against the ship, Waltfeld had tracked down the group's secret base at Tassil and ordered his second-in-command, Martin DaCosta to coordinate their attack.[2]

The Attack[]

The attack broke out in the dead of night while members of the Desert Dawn were busy negotiating with the Archangel's crew. As per Waltfeld's orders, DaCosta immediately evacuated all of Tassil's residents before the order to attack. Despite the evacuation, several resistance fighters remained inside the town and attempted to fight back. However, their conventional weapons proved ineffective against the TMF/A-802 BuCUE's armor. In spite of the resistance, the ZAFT forces withheld from killing any of the soldiers.[3]

As the Desert Dawn's base was within a mountain, several BuCUEs fired missiles inside, destroying it and all the supplies within.[2] As soon as they had accomplished their goal, Waltfeld ordered the BuCUEs to fall back before they could engage with the irate members of the resistance group.[3]

Aftermath[]

Despite there being no casualties, the now-homeless residents demanded that Waltfeld be punished. In spite of Desert Dawn leader, Sahib Ashman, and Alliance Lieutenant Mu La Flaga knowing that Waltfeld's act was rather merciful despite the war, the egging of the residents caused most of the Desert Dawn's members to leave and foolishly chase after and engaged the better armed ZAFT forces. Predictably, the group suffered heavy casualties and would've been wiped out had it not been for the intervention of Kira Yamato's GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Gundam.[3]
