The Attack on Requiem Station One is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Following Logos' final defeat with the death of Lord Djibril at the Battle of Daedalus, PLANT Supreme Council Chairman, Gilbert Durandal, finally unveiled his grand solution to ending human conflict: the Destiny Plan. The plan outlined people being identified and trained for what their genetics were best suited for. While his announcement was met with wide acclaim, members of the Three Ships Alliance and many others held doubts as this held the unwritten caveat of people being stripped of individuality and choice in exchange for a preordained future.[1][2]

Ultimately, only three factions refused to cooperate with Durandal for his plan, the Earth Alliance, the Kingdom of Scandinavia, and the Orb Union. In response, Durandal had the newly-acquired and repurposed Requiem superweapon fire upon the Atlantic Federation's only remaining lunar base, Arzachel; killing Atlantic Federation president, Joseph Copeland. This action was met by pure shock, not only by opposing factions of ZAFT, but by its own soldiers as well, many of whom believed the superweapon was being dismantled. Realizing that Durandal could simply fire upon his enemies on Earth whenever he pleases, the Three Ships Alliance immediately made plans to deal with the weapon while it recharged.[2]

Both the LCAM-01XA Archangel and the FFMH-Y101 Eternal ships were to head towards and destroy the critical Station One as Requiem's beam needed to travel through it first to bend to the other stations, while the Izumo-class Kusanagi and the rest of the fleet, alongside survivors from Arzachel and a small group of ZAFT defectors, made their way to Daedalus Lunar Base to attack Requiem itself.[3]

The Battle[]

The battle opened as both Kira Yamato's ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam and Athrun Zala's ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam mounted with their new METEOR Units 07 and 08, respectively, and departed as Lacus Clyne requested for ZAFT forces to allow them to pass for them to be able to destroy the superweapon. The Archangel also deployed Neo Roanoke's ORB-01 Shiranui Akatsuki Gundam to support both ships alongside a MVF-M11C Murasame squadron. Though Lacus' words still held sway over most soldiers, the majority of the captains rallied their forces and attempted to stop the Strike Freedom and ∞ Justice. Despite their numbers, the superior quality of the Archangel and the Eternal's Gundams allowed the force to continue their advance towards the station.[3]

The group was ultimately halted by the LHM-BB01 Minerva, Gondwana, and several more Nazca-class and Laurasia-class ships that had come to reinforce the defenders. Lunamaria Hawke's ZGMF-X56S/α Force Impulse Gundam was able to reach the Eternal, but she hesitated upon learning that her sister Meyrin Hawke was alive and aboard the ship and was driven off by the Eternal's three ZGMF-XX09T DOM Troopers. The Minerva also nearly scored a decisive hit with its "Tannhäuser" positron blaster cannon on the Archangel's bridge as it was unable to evade due to the Eternal being directly behind, but the attack was blocked by Neo, who used the Shiranui Akatsuki's "Yata-no-Kagami" anti-beam defensive reflection system to dispurse the entire shot and destroy "Tannhäuser" afterwards. The battle finally came to a close when Yzak Joule, Dearka Elsman, and the other members of the Joule Team defected mid-battle and covered Kira and Athrun as they sliced Station One apart using the METEORs' powerful beam swords.[3]

Aftermath[]

Despite the massive feat on the part of the Three Ships Alliance, Station One was, in reality, only an expendable pawn in Durandal's strategy as he anticipated its attack and planned accordingly. While the show of force was to lock the Archangel and the Eternal in combat, they were essentially isolated from the Kusanagi's strike force, which was unable to pierce Requiem's new Positron Reflectors with their "Lohengrin" positron blaster cannons and were greatly damaged by the sudden arrival of Durandal's mobile space fortress Messiah and the firing of its Neo-GENESIS superweapon. The Battle of Messiah began immediately after as Durandal ordered for another relay station, that being Station Two, to be moved to Station One's former position.[4]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The battle is featured in Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn as the first phase of Gundam SEED Destiny's final stage, where players are given Kira's perspective as he, Athrun, and Neo attempt to breach the ZAFT defense. Unlike the original, remnants of Logos still remain and engaged with ZAFT forces alongside three GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam and must be dealt with to protect Yzak and Dearka's defecting forces.
