The "Astray Project" is a Mobile Suit development project introduced in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray.

History

Five Heliopolis Prototypes

While assisting the Earth Alliance in the construction of their first-generation "G-Weapons", Morgenröte secretly diverted many of the technologies provided by the Earth Alliance into the creation of their own mobile suit series for the Orb Union: the "MBF-P" (Main Battle Figure - Prototype) "Astray" series. A total of five prototype machines were produced.

During the Battle of Heliopolis, orders were given to destroy all five Astrays to cover up the project's existence, but the effort failed; three of the machines were acquired by various third parties, while Orb ended up with the remaining two.

Mass-Production

Despite the loss of most of the prototype Astrays, Morgenröte successfully created a mass-production model on Earth using the data they obtained from the development of the prototype units. Unfortunately, they had difficulties creating an Operating System (OS) that enabled the mobile suit to be easily piloted by a Natural. Later, Morgenröte managed to acquire data on the Gundam Astray Red Frame's Natural-use OS when Juri Wu Nien went on an undercover mission within the Junk Guild, though this was still not enough to create an effective OS for Natural pilots. The OS was later completed thanks to the assistance of Kira Yamato, pilot of the Earth Alliance's Strike Gundam, who extensively rewrote the OS to the point where a Natural could fight on equal terms with a Coordinator.
