The Assassination of Siegel Clyne is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Prelude[]

Siegel Clyne was the PLANT Supreme Council Chairman during the first half of the First Alliance-PLANT War and sought to end the conflict quickly and decisively so they could restore peace between Naturals and Coordinators.[1] However, before he could do so, his term ran out and Patrick Zala, Siegel's old friend and leader of the Radical Faction, took his place. Siegel retired to Clyne Manor to stay with his daughter, Lacus. However, things changed when Reverend Malchio brought a badly wounded Kira Yamato to their house to recover.[2]

During Kira's stay, Siegel and Lacus learned of Operation Spitbreak, an unauthorized decisive strike on JOSH-A. Lacus helped Kira hijack a prototype ZAFT Mobile Suit so he could save his friends.[3] Unbeknown to both Siegel and Patrick, Rau Le Creuset had tipped off Atlantic Federation personnel of the attack, who used the battle to shift the balance of power in the Earth Alliance. Operation Spitbreak was a devastating loss for ZAFT and Zala wanted answer.[4]

Discovering footage of Lacus allowing the theft of the Mobile Suit, Zala became convinced that Siegel and the other moderates within PLANT were behind Operation Spitbreak's failure and fabricated proof to order the moderates' arrest or death. Siegel and Lacus went their separate ways so their attempts at peace wouldn't end in failure.[5]

The Assassination[]

In June, C.E. 71 ZAFT soldiers found and confronted Siegel in a safe house, surrounded by supporters of the Clyne Faction. Despite their best attempts, Zala's troops overwhelmed Siegel's defenders and shot him dead.[6]

Aftermath[]

With Siegel and other moderates eradicated or imprisoned, Patrick Zala would push for a massive and equal retribution towards Naturals, believing that Coordinators were a superior race. Lacus, meanwhile, would continue the Clyne Faction's work in bringing about peace, joining up with Andrew Waltfeld in stealing a high-powered support ship in their quest to stop the war from escalating.[7]
