The Assassination Attempt in Copernicus City is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Following the "Break The World" Incident that kickstarted the Second Alliance-PLANT War, PLANT Supreme Chairman Gilbert Durandal pacified ZAFT soldiers via Meer Campbell,[1] a fan of songstress Lacus Clyne who was unremarkable in looks but had a singing voice similar to Lacus'. After extensive plastic surgery and being taught how to act like her, Meer "became" Lacus, traveling the Earth singing her songs to soldiers and those affected by the war and even attempted to continue Lacus' former engagement to Athrun Zala.[2][3] Meer became so lost in her role that, when Athrun attempted to escape an assassination attempt on his life, she refused to join him as being Lacus was all she knew.[4]

Sadly, this fake life came crashing down following the events of Operation Fury. When Cagalli Yula Athha made a statement condemning the attack on the Orb Union, ZAFT intercepted the signal and Meer began to give a speech trying to downplay ZAFT's role. However, Orb regained control with the real Lacus Clyne appearing with Cagalli. With her duplicity exposed, Meer was asked to go into hiding to let the heat die down.[5][6]

Upon arriving at Copernicus City, the decision was made to gather intel on ZAFT and any possible EA moves. To do this, despite the danger, Lacus decided to go shopping, joined by Kira Yamato, Meyrin Hawke, and Athrun. Discovering Lacus there, Sarah, Meer's main bodyguard, decided to lay out a trap to finally take out Lacus. Meer's Red Haro was sent out to find Lacus and deliver a message - a note claiming that Meer was going to be killed. Knowing it was a trap, Lacus decided to go ahead to meet Meer face to face.[7]

The Assassination Attempt[]

Arriving at the location, a summer house she frequented, Meer took aim at Lacus, upset and angry that she "took" her life. However, Lacus was able to calm Meer down, making her realize that her life was her own. As she did that, Sarah attempted to snipe Lacus, but was distracted by Kira's pet robot Birdy, and missed. Kira, Athrun and Meyrin got Lacus and Meer to safety before returning fire as other assassins emerged. As the three took down the assassins, Lacus was able to reassure Meer that her life was her own to live and to sing her own song rather than copying what Lacus had.[7]

With the assassins dead, a call was made back to the Archangel to have Mu La Flaga come with the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam to pick them up. As Mu arrived and Kira offered to help Meer onto the Mobile Suit, Meer spotted Sarah, mortally wounded and taking aim at Lacus with a pistol. Calling out Lacus' name, Meer threw herself at Lacus and took the bullet meant for her as Kira and Athrun fired back, killing Sarah. As Meer laid dying in Lacus' arms, she begged her to remember her and her song.[7]

In the manga, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: The Edge, the assassination attempt instead occurs on Meer's private estate on Earth rather than Copernicus City in space. Additionally, Athrun, Lacus, and Kira are accompanied by Hilda Harken, Mars Simeon, and Herbert Von Reinhard instead of Meyrin. As Birdy is no longer present, Athrun instead notices Sarah's rifle off a reflection of light from her scope, and Sarah is instead positioned at the roof of the building Athrun and co. emerge from. Meer's death also changes to her shielding Lacus from an attempted snipe before she can hide inside the building with Kira.

Aftermath[]

Despite their best efforts, Meer passed on before arriving on the Archangel. Discovering a disk containing a diary within Meer's purse, Lacus, Kira, Athrun and Meyrin learned of Meer's past, from hopeful fan to being Lacus herself. Learning all that she did, Lacus realized that Meer "sang for peace" like she did, even if it was from an unwittingly duplicitous angle. She would mourn Meer's death, crying in Kira's arms as she vowed she would never forget her. However, things would get worse as Durandal prepared to reveal his endgoal...[8]

Meer's death would leave Lacus as undisputed "Lacus Clyne", and Durandal's use of an imposter would brought to light by the end of the Second Alliance-PLANT War[9].
