History[]
One Year War[]
Asakura is a technical officer in the Principality of Zeon army with the rank of Colonel. Following the loss of Odessa and Solomon, the Zeon military was on the defensive. After witnessing the effectiveness of the Earth Federation's Solar System during the Battle of Solomon and fearing the Federation's next move would be a full-scale assault on the home colonies, Gihren Zabi ordered the construction of a massive solar powered beam projector known as the Solar Ray. The project originally started in the sealed colony of "Mahal" in September 0079, exploiting the same loophole in the Antarctic Treaty as the Federation's Solar System. Supervised by Asakura, who had also developed Zeon's lethal GG Gas, a nerve agent used in the genocidal assaults against Side 2, solar batteries from other colonies were collected and a projection array was built within the colony walls. Although intended for use against the Federation this weapon was only used once against Degwin Sodo Zabi while his fleet and General Revil's fleet were meeting to negotiate a peace. The premature firing of the Solar Ray by Gihren Zabi caused the weapon to burn out, which contributed to the Principality of Zeon's loss during the Battle of A Baoa Qu by depriving Gihren and Kycilia Zabi the ability to strike at the Federation from a distance.
After he reports to Gihren on the status of the Solar Ray, Asakura awaits his next order; however, no further order comes. With Zeon's defeat imminent, and his role in creating and using weapons of mass destruction, Asakura flees the battlefield. He is pursued by Lieutenant Commander Cima Garahau, the leader of the marines assigned to Asakura, who hopes to take revenge on him for using her and her subordinates' home colony as the structure for the Solar Ray. Despite her efforts, Asakusa successfully escaped the battlefield. After the end of hostilities, Asakura avoids punishment by blaming the gassing of Side 2 on Cima and her marines.
