—Quentin Fermo on Arlette's piloting skills,
Arlette enjoyed handling machinery at a young age, and thus developed skills as a mechanic as she studied MS maintenance at the Flanagan Institute. These skills were noted by Char Aznable, who had been impressed by her high test marks.
Arlette had been mobile suit mechanic since she was a young child, often working with Char Aznable's mobile suits. She was raised in the Flanagan Institute as "Seven", where she was subjected to inhumane experimentation alongside other children. As a suspected Newtype, she spent many years being tested for her abilities. However, she was unable to meet the institute's expectations, and could her results were only on par with ordinary pilots, and following subsequent unfavorable test results, she became a candidate for disposal.
However, at the same time Lalah Sune and Char had been visiting the Flanagan Institute, Char took note of her exceptional engineering skills, and offered her a chance to become his mobile suit mechanic. She later was assigned to the Maharaja Khan Memorial Research Institute, to help develop MS, where she met Danton Hyleg, a test pilot.
Since her "recruitment", Arlette had developed a deep fascination with Char, and would often declare her intentions to do her best so as to best meet his expectations. This unfortunately came to a crushing end upon her discovery of Lalah's relationship with the Captain, which sent her spiraling into a depression even after Lalah's death following the Elemeth's defeat by Amuro Ray in the RX-78-2 Gundam. Despite this, she would become closer with Danton, whom Char had left with orders to protect her, with the two developing a deep bond through the engineering and testing of Axis-developed Mobile Suits.
After the end of the Second Neo Zeon War, she hid her identity and moved to Side 6 with Danton Hyleg, opening a dry cleaning business to support themselves. However, when Mehmet Merca of the Earth Federation "Mastema" forces asks of her to join him in investigating Axis, following the events of Laplace's Box, she accepts, wanting to find out what had happened to Char, who disappeared following "Axis Shock" at the end of the Second Neo Zeon War.
Arlette met Danton when the two were assigned to develop and test MS at the Maharaja Khan Memorial Research Institute at Side 6. Char had ordered Danton to protect Arlette prior to his departure to the AEUG, an order he maintained through various Zeon movements. Following the end of the Second Neo Zeon War the two moved back to Side 6, and lived quiet lives together, running a dry cleaning business. Arlette looks up to Danton as a father figure.
To Arlette, Char is both an idol and a substitute father, who had given her hope after her days living and being experimented upon in the Flanagan Institute.
Although they were not on personal terms, Arlette was deeply hurt upon learning of Lalah's relationship with Char, causing the latter to view the former as a threat. This was further amplified by their supposed Newtype abilities, which caused Arlette even further distress.
- Arlette is the fourth female protagonist of the Gundam franchise, succeeding Tiel Noembreux from New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Sidestory: Tiel's Impulse, Asuna Elmarit from Mobile Suit Gundam École du Ciel and Chall Acustica from Season 1 of Mobile Suit Gundam 00P.
- However, she's the first female protagonist to star in an animated Gundam work.
