The air-defense combat satellite was an armed automated defense satellite used by the Earth Federation Forces. It first appeared in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The air-defense combat satellite was somewhat larger than an 18m mobile suit. It was armed with three mega particle cannons, as well as two missile pods, each equipped with 22 missiles. It was able to maneuver using numerous vernier thrusters. It was equipped with two sets of cameras and sensors, one on the top and one on the bottom.[1] When it detects an enemy using its sensors, it was capable of automatically attacking using its weapons and transmitting video footage of the enemy to friendly forces.[2]

History[]

The origin of the air-defense combat satellite was unclear. It is possible that they were part of a pre-Universal Century ICBM interception system.[3]

An air-defense combat satellite being destroyed

In U.C. 0083, Confeito employed several of these satellites for defense. When Anavel Gato led a mobile suit team to attack the space fortress on November 10, U.C. 0083, he was detected by one such satellite, which proceeded to destroy one of his MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II escorts. It was soon destroyed by another Rick Dom II, but not before it transferred footage of Gato's RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis" to the Albion, revealing Gato's location. Another satellite fired its missiles at the GP02A, but Gato evaded the missiles and destroyed it with a kick.[2]

In U.C. 0087, as the AEUG warship Argama prepared to launch Reccoa Londe to Earth in the shuttle Hohsenka, Quattro Bajeena, leading a team of RMS-099 Rick Dias, destroyed numerous air-defense combat satellites in Earth's orbit.[4]

Wreckage of an air-defense combat satellite above Oceania

In U.C. 0105, as Haunzen Flight 356 approached Earth, its flight crew noticed several destroyed surveillance satellites, including an air-defense combat satellite (the same model as the ones used at Confeito), above Oceania. One of the crew members remarked that they must have been destroyed by Mafty.[5]

These satellites were still in use by the time of the Jupiter War in U.C. 0133. The Jupiter Empire military, under the order of Supreme Leader Crux Dogatie, began its attack on the Earth Federation by destroying numerous solar power satellites and air-defense combat satellites.
