Agnes Giebenrath (アグネス・ギーベンラート Agunesu Gībenrāto?) is a character introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
Personality & Character[]
Agnes is shown to be a haughty and prideful woman, who disparages her fellow pilots Shinn Asuka and Lunamaria Hawke. She belittles Shinn for his piloting skills, and boasts that his mobile suit would be better in her possession. She also openly mocks Lunamaria for being lovers with Shinn. Despite her nature towards her fellow pilots, she praises her Squad Commander, Kira Yamato.
She is shown to greatly value herself as a pilot and as a woman, delighting in the praise and recognition shown to her by Shura Serpentine for her reputation as the "Moonlight Valkyrie" in combat. When Lunamaria accused her of always going after other people's lovers, she responded by saying there is nothing wrong with that as any man would love her. Agnes has believed herself to be a better partner for Kira, and tried to convince him that Lacus Clyne is not suited for him but is quickly rejected. After her rejection she tearfully goes to Shura for consolation and affirmation of her value, leading her to join Foundation after their betrayal of Compass and going as far as almost striking down Kira.
When she later reencounters Lunamaria she cries about her failure in being appreciated as a woman by those she pursued, and questions why Lunamaria is loved while she herself is not. When she is defeated by Lunamaria, she tearfully cries that she too had actually loved the one she was chasing for.

Agnes was a skilled mobile suit pilot, earning the 'Moonlight Valkyrie' alias. She scored higher than Shinn at the academy and was one of the main pilots of the Compass fighters.[1]

Agnes was enrolled at the ZAFT military academy along with Shinn, Lunamaria and the others. She claimed that her skills and evaluations were higher than Shinn's. Lunamaria claimed that she often went after other people's lovers. Agnes would go on to become a member of ZAFT, then eventually joined Compass after Chairman Durandal was killed. She would work alongside her former schoolmates, Shinn and Lunamaria, as well as Kira who she would develop a crush on. Agnes was also entrusted with the GYAN Strom mobile suit.
Rejected by Kira
Agnes was one of the key fighters at Compass, and followed Kira and the others to Ishtaria in the Kingdom of Foundation. She mocked Shinn when he loses to Shura Serpentine, and was flattered when he complemented her strength and beauty. She attempted to invite Kira to dance with her that night after seeing Lacus Clyne, his lover, dancing with another man. Lunamaria warned her not to make passes at Kira but she insulted her. She made further passes on Kira aboard the Millennium and badmouthed Lacus, knowing that she was eavesdropping outside the room. She also attempted to kiss Kira, but he immediately pushed her away and firmly rejected her. Heartbroken and bitter, she left the ship and met Shura. He comforted her and they embraced, with Agnes happy at being appreciated.
After Foundation betrayed the other two parties and Shura corners Kira, she joined the fray and attacked Kira from behind. He was surprised by her betrayal after leaving the cockpit of his destroyed mobile suit, and she raised her weapon to finish him off, but was shot in the back by Athrun Zala. She continued to brood in her mobile suit until Shura decided to retreat, aware that the nuclear missile would soon wipe them out if they stayed. When he asked Agnes if she would come with them, she agreed to do so and he carried her off. She went into space with the remaining members of the Foundation and boarded the Gullveig, where her GYAN Strom was serviced.
Agnes VS Lunamaria
During the Battle of Requiem, she joined the other Black Knights when they are dispatched to attack the Millennium. She faced off against Lunamaria and mocked her for joining Naturals and being with Shinn. Lunamaria countered her by mentioning how she was rejected by Kira, and she attacked Lunamaria in a fit of rage. The two face each other and Lunamaria eventually came out on top, disabling Agnes' mobile suit and causing it to fall towards the moon. After the battle, Agnes sat on the moon's surfaces and cried after losing, but Lunamaria extended a hand to her (as Athrun Zala did to Shinn in the previous conflict).[1]

Kira Yamato[]
Agnes looked up to Kira, believing that a man of his caliber was well suited for her as she believed that she was also special. She tried to steal him away from Lacus, but after failing and being rejected she instead harboured resentment and anger towards him. This led to her joining Shura instead and betraying Kira, attacking his Rising Freedom Gundam in battle. She revealed after being beaten by Lunamaria that she did in fact love Kira, and was upset about being rejected because she thought he didn't see her as worthy.
Shinn Asuka[]
Agnes looked down on Shinn, who had inferior skills and evaluations than she did at the academy, yet somehow was appointed to FAITH and given the Immortal Justice Gundam in Compass. She constantly goaded him, saying he only got into FAITH because he was the perfect puppet for Durandal. She also wanted the Justice Gundam from him, believing it was too good for him.
Lunamaria Hawke[]
Because of how Agnes treated Shinn, she had a rocky relationship with Lunamaria who came to Shinn's defense. She did not believe that Lunamaria actually loved Shinn, thinking she just settled for him because she could not do any better. As she believed Kira to be superior to Shinn and saw Shura beating him in a sword fight, she thought that she was better by virtue of having the better man. She was surprised to learn the truth when Lunamaria told her she truly loved Shinn for who he was.
Shura Serpentine[]
Agnes felt that Shura was worthy of her thanks to him handily defeating Shinn in a sword fight as well as his knowledge of her reputation as the Moonlight Valkyrie. When Kira rejects her advances, Shura is able to take advantage of Agnes' desire for approval to compliment her beauty. In Eldore, this comes to head when Agnes makes the decision to betray Kira and aid Shura.

- Agnes’ Japanese voice actress, Houko Kuwashima, also previously voiced the characters Flay Allster, Natarle Badgiruel, and Via Hibiki in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, as well as Stella Loussier and Rey Za Burrel (child) in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.
- Agnes is also the only character voiced by Kuwashima not to be "cursed" as all other characters mentioned met violent deaths by the end of their respective series.
- Agnes behaves similarly to Reccoa Londe and Quess Paraya, from the Universal Century Timeline.
- All are pilots who develop an interest for a strong male pilot or commander such as Quattro Bajeena, and Amuro Ray, respectively. Agnes develops an interest in Kira Yamato.
- All are rebuffed by their love interest, then betray their perspective groups due to being charmed by the charisma of an antagonist who feigns reciprocating their feelings towards them. Reccoa betrays the AEUG to join the Titans by Paptimus Scirocco, Quess leaves the protection of Londo Bell to join Neo Zeon by Char Aznable, and Agnes betrays Compass to join Foundation by Shura Serpentine.
