Adelaide is a location in the Universal Century timeline. It is first mentioned in Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise From the Ashes.

Overview

Adelaide is the fifth most populous city in Australia. It is located on Australia's southern coast.

History

One Year War

In addition to the Principality of Zeon's Operation British resulting in the annihilation of Sydney, the shockwave from the colony drop's impact caused extensive collateral damage elsewhere in Australia. Most of Adelaide survived the shockwave intact, but the coastal districts of the city were reduced to an uninhabitable zone of rubble, known as the "Adelaide Coastal Reef Area", that would not be rebuilt until after the end of the One Year War. In the wake of the colony drop, Zeon forces occupied most of Australia, establishing their main headquarters in Melbourne and setting up military bases and logistics depots in Alice Springs, Darwin, Derby, Hughenden, and Adelaide. Adelaide Base, located outside the city limits of Adelaide, hosted a battalion of railway engineers and logistics support personnel. A submarine base was also constructed on the edge of the Adelaide Coastal Reef Area, with its location amid the ruins concealing it for most of the war.

Following the Earth Federation Forces' decisive victory in Operation Odessa in November of U.C. 0079, the EFF was able to reclaim strategic control of most of Earth's oceans and took the initiative to evict Zeon from Australia. This Australian counteroffensive began with the capture of Alice Springs, the transportation hub for the entire continent, on November 25, followed by simultaneous advances north and south to take Darwin and Adelaide. The EFF's Red Possum and Yellow Quokka units led the push to Adelaide, but became bogged down by unexpectedly fierce resistance, leaving them vulnerable to a possible flanking attack from Zeon's Melbourne troops. On December 18, the White Dingo Team was deployed to take some of the pressure off Red Possum and Yellow Quokka by eliminating a Zeon unit stationed at a mining site near the town of Carrieton, just north of Adelaide. The mission was successful, and Adelaide subsequently fell to the EFF.

While the EFF possessed intel revealing the presence of Zeon's submarine base in the Adelaide Coastal Reef Area, they did not know the base's exact location and feared it could become a hideout for isolated Zeon units. This assumption was correct; Matchi-Manitou, a unit of Kycilia Zabi's special forces originally stationed at California Base, was able to enter Australia with the biological weapon Astaroth via the Adelaide submarine base. There was also ample opportunity for the base's supplies and personnel to be evacuated, and to scuttle the submarine that Matchi-Manitou has arrived in. The White Dingo Team discovered and assaulted the submarine base on December 23, just as the last Zeon evacuation flight departed for Hughenden. EFF analysis of the facility and a downed helicopter confirmed the presence of Matchi-Manitou and Astaroth, and White Dingo was sent north in pursuit of Matchi-Manitou.

Mafty Uprising

In U.C. 0105, Adelaide was selected as the site of the 25th annual meeting of the Earth Federation Cabinet, an executive body of the Earth Federation that consisted of the government's top ministers. On April 19, shortly before the Adelaide Conference convened, Haunzen Flight 356 from Von Braun to Hong Kong was hijacked by a group of terrorists. Flight 356 was carrying several Earth Federation ministers who were traveling to the Adelaide Conference. After the hijacking incident was resolved by Hathaway Noa and Kenneth Sleg, Flight 356 made an emergency landing in Davao in the Philippines, where the shuttle's passengers were obliged to spend the night while the incident was investigated. That night, the extremist group Mafty attacked Davao and assassinated the government ministers.
