The ACA-01 Gaw (also spelled Gau) is an atmospheric attack carrier used by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. It appeared first in the Mobile Suit Gundam TV series, followed by The 08th MS Team and MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079.
Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Gaw was a large bomber and transport aircraft developed by the Principality of Zeon for use in Earth's atmosphere. It was powered by a thermonuclear reactor that drove 18 thermonuclear jet engines, and the aircraft had almost infinite range. However, because the Gaw was designed using computer simulation like the DFA-03 Dopp, it could not support flight by lift alone and even at full speed relied on downward jet thrust for 30% of its lift. The Gaw was sluggish and had low mobility due to relying solely on its vertical tail stabilizer for steering.
The Gaw was categorized as an "attack aircraft carrier" because it could carry mobile suits and aircraft while also being heavily armed with three twin mega particle operated by a gunner and had carpet bombing capability. Designed to deploy mobile suits that lacked long-distance mobility on land, the Gaw could carry three mobile suits in a deck at the front of its fuselage. It could also carry four Dopp fighters in a hangar at the base of each wing, for a total of eight. In order to deploy mobile suits, the Gaw had to slow to a speed of about, 100 km/h, which made it an easy target for enemies. The Gaw also had a deck at the rear that could accommodate the Komusai, which could launch from the Gaw while it was airborne. This method of delivering the Komusai increased its survival rate. While the rear deck was shuttered, the doors of the mobile suit deck swung open.
- Twin Mega Particle Gun
- The Gaw was armed with three twin mega particle cannons, with one in each wing and one atop the main fuselage. Each cannon was retractable and capable of rotating in its mount.
- Beam Cannon
- Air-to-Ground Missile Launcher
- During the Battle of Jaburo, the Gaw was deployed without Dopp fighters and multiple air-to-ground missile launchers were instead installed in the two hangars.
- Anti-Aircraft Gun
- The Gaw was armed with an unknown number of ant-aircraft machine gun turrets for defense against enemy aircraft or mobile suits.
- Bomb Bay
- The Gaw had a bomb bay at the bottom of its fuselage that carried a large amount of explosives and enabled it to carpet bomb enemy cities.
The Gaw was used by the Principality of Zeon to help spearhead their Earth Attack Force, led by Colonel Garma Zabi. However, when the Earth Federation began producing mobile suits of their own, the vulnerability of these attack carriers would be exploited, including the moment when the Pegasus-class White Base used its mobile suits to shoot down Garma's Gaw after being deceived by Char Aznable false information.
Several Gaws were used in the unsuccessful Zeon offensive in their attempt to take the Earth Federation's General Headquarters in Jaburo, in which they dropped off their payloads of mobile suits to take the attack to the ground and to try to force their way inside.
In U.C. 0096, during the events in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn: The Noble Shroud, a Gaw was operated by the Pirates as their command center during the attack of retreating Zeon Remnant's base in New Guinea. It was later intercepted and destroyed by EFF's RX-160S Byarlant Custom and RX-160S-2 Byarlant Custom 02.
