Well, you could go to Wikipedia. Or search on Gundamwiki.
Well first. 0079 was made to market a single toy, made by a company named Clover. Because there was only one toy, the rest of the mobile suits were fair game to design, which is why the Zaku is atypically asymmetric (which at the time would’ve been extremely difficult to do for a toy). However, due to the commercial failure of both the toy and the show, clover went bankrupt and folded (that said the people who managed to see it despite its odd airing time, they did enjoy it). The show was then moved to syndication, and filled dead network air, which did more to get people to watch the show than it’s original air time ever did. Once people started seeing snipettes of the show, they sent fan mail (real letters) to Tomino, requesting more. The newfound and sudden popularity of the show caused Bandai to step in, and made model kits of the Gundam, that sold like hot cakes. Soon after, the compilation movies were made, and the first gathering of Mecha fans, and possibly first major convention happened at their viewing. The rest is history.
Some other notable moments. Tomino was forced to condense F91 from a series to a movie. And he leaves the project after Victory Gundam, when the series got middling ratings, until the V2!Gundam got its mid season upgrade giving it beam wings and the model kit was super popular. The knowledge that the show became popular at the time for such a hollow reason severely depressed Tomino, and he left the project. Until returning with Turn A. And then later G Reco (which during development had its episode count halved from 50 to 25).
Oh and Gundam X was not unpopular due to its story or anything. But it was the fourth in a long period of time when Sunrise was making yearly Gundam anime, and after the likes of G Fighter, Wing, and I believe Zeta? It’s highly likely people were just exhausted from Gundam. The non success of X caused sunrise to take a break.
Also please don’t summarize CCA as “Char became a maniac who wants to destroy the world” cuz I went to a panel at an anime convention where that’s the gist of what was said and I hated it. Like. Any good Gundam fan would know it’s much more complicated than that. And summarizing it that way does a supreme disservice to Char as a character.
What do you think?
